July 26 1793
On that day, Petrus Joannes De Vidts, aged 43, died at Pamel, where he had been born on September 19 1749. Around 1776, he married Carolina Van der Straeten (Ternat ca 1753 - Pamel 1801). They had ten children. Their sixth child and second son was Joannes Franciscus De Vidts (Pamel 1784 - 1839) who married Maria Elisabeth Van Lierde (Pamel 1790- 1838). They had eight children, the second of which was Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1811 - 1881) who became the father of my great-grandfather Felix De Vidts (Pamel 1853 - 1940).

I have been out of touch for a couple of days, compliments of Electrabel and Skynet. It just goes to show how dependent we have become on our technical gadgets. After a couple of interventions, by very friendly people indeed, the ADSL line should now be correctly repaired. All's well that ends well, I hope ...
My site meter proves conclusively that, in the few days I was out of combat, very few people missed me and my contrarian remarks. I am glad to be back nevertheless.
It his high season for contrarians. Even the weather helps. We had no Winter at all, Summer in April and now we have Fall in July : abundant rain and showers, wind, cold temperatures - you name it, we got it. Last year we were almost at melting point, now we can use some heating.
Our political heroes are busy going nowhere and possibly ruining the very last chances of survival for our country. They would fit very nicely in the Breughel painting which I reproduced some time ago, but with one major difference. They are not really blind : they just do not want to consider the consequences of implementing their parochial party interests and attitudes. Statesmen indeed.
The Tour de France, which used to be one of the many Summer highlights for your devoted blogger, ended in confusion, a total loss of credibility and acute "scandalitis". How irrational, shortsighted and stupid can "sportsmen" get when large sums of money are at stake ? Lying, conniving and hypocrite ... you know what. And business - the empire of pure, unadulterated greed - is now willing to give lessons in morality to the inhabitants of the professionnal cycling jungle. The blind leading the blind again. Very shortly after inventing ultra flexible rules for "corporate governance", business now teaches the cycling world how to behave. The poacher turned game-keeper.
A well known TV personality recently said that the widespread (politically correct) relativism in morality leads to the corruption of norms and values, and thus to chaos. This is true in every field of human behaviour : in society, in business, in politics... High time for people who think otherwise, but are afraid to talk because they might be labeled conservative and politically incorrect, to start speaking out.
There are signs that this is starting to happen. Hopefully that trend continues. If not, the future appears very bleak indeed.

July 25 1694
On July 25 1694 Judocus Timmermans passed away at Gooik. He had been baptized at Gooik on September 21 1649 and married Catharina (Maria) Appelmans (Gooik 1656 - 1733), who remarried after his death.
They had two children : Cornelius lived for less than a month in november 1679 and Joannes who was born at Gooik in 1686 died at Meerbeke in 1769. He married Maria Anna De Vleeschauwer (Meerbeke 1683 - 1761).
Their son Nicolaes Timmermans - who married twice - lived for almost one hundred years in Meerbeke - from 1711 to 1808. Both father and son had a lot of children. One of them was Philippus (Meerbeke 1740 - 1814). He was a son of Nicolaes and of his first wife Petronella Van Eesbeke (Meerbeke 1706 - 1772). Philippus also married twice and his second wife was Petronella Van den Berghe (Meerbeke 1766 - 1824).
According to my research, this Philippus was the father of Charles Timmermans, who was born at Meerbeke in 1812, when his father was 71 and his mother 46. That is the reason why, a couple of almost ironclad checks notwithstanding, I still hesitate to claim for certain that this Philippus is the real father of Charles.
There are three possibilities : either the data are correct and Philippus is the real father ; or the data are correct and Philippus is the legal, but not the real father ; or an - improbable - mistake slipped in my research and the father of Charles is another Philippus Timmermans altogether.
In genealogy nothing ever is absolutely certain, but to be "as certain" as possible, I will have to reconstitute all the Timmermans families in Meerbeke in the 18th en 19th century - and there are lots of them. This will require very significant additional research but will pay off eventually as I will get a reliable overview of the exact relationships (or lack of it) between all the people bearing the same family name.
Charles who died at Meerbeke in 1883 was married twice too. He and his second wife Maria Anna Van den Houte (who was born in Lieferinge in 1825) were the parents of my great-grandfather Jozef Timmermans (Meerbeke 1858 - 1929).

Maybe Belgium is a contrarian joke, and, just maybe, that's why I like it ?

July 23 1728
On July 23 1728 Laurentius De Leeuw died at Impegem, where he had been born around 1644.
Apparently, Laurentius did not do too well although he had been an administrator of the "armentafel" in 1672. In 1683 he had a spot of trouble with the lady of Okegem who had a piece of land and meadow sold because he did not pay his rent. Between 1695 and 1722 he lost most of the land he worked on : the surface he tended fell from 172 roeden to 72.
Laurentius married twice and had three children with his first and seven with his second wife ; several of his children had to be assisted with parish funds. He also had a natural son.
His daughter Catharina, born from his second marriage with Catharina Reybosch (+ 1700) passed away at Okegem in 1757. She had married Egidius Vernaillen (Denderleeuw 1691 - Okegem 1759), and their daughter Joanna Vernaillen (Okegem 1725 - Pamel 1791) married Ferdinandus Van der Sleyen (Pamel 1724 - 1810). It is from this Ferdinand that our branch of the De Vidts family took the name "van Fernantes".
Joanna's son Michael Van der Sleyen (Pamel 1758 - 1827) married Petronella Van Eeckhoudt (Pamel 1771 - 1828). They were the parents of Maria Elisabeth Van der Sleyen (see my blog for July 22 1860), the mother my great-grandfather Felix De Vidts.

Belgian jokes galore
Il shall first repeat in English what I wrote yesterday about the startling reaction of our possible (I sincerely hope not, because the guy has no use for Belgium any more) future prime minister, who, being invited to sing the Brabançonne, immediately broke into the Marseillaise. And the worst part of it is that he feels he had been trapped ! One of his French speaking colleagues remarked that he probably is not intelligent enough to memorize the words of our national anthem in French. We have a cartoon figure, Gaston Lagaffe (Guus Flater). Maybe there is a relation somewhere ? Shame, shame !
Today we also read that one of our princes (of which we have a busload, big and small) did not wear his marine uniform because it does not fit any more.
And, in order to give it a better image, tap water is going to be supplied in half litre boxes to local authorities. This is an initiative of the largest supplier of tap water in Flanders, the VMW. One week they are environment friendly ; the next ... plain crazy ?
By the way, I hugely enjoyed the hat worn by our queen, although I most certainly will not be disrespectfull to the point of calling it a joke.
And last but not least, o tempora, o mores, the Simpsons movie will be dubbed in Flemish. A sacrilege ! D' oh !! D' oh !! D' oh !!

July 22 1860
On July 22 1860 my great-great-grandmother Maria Elisabeth Van der Sleyen passed away at Pamel. She did not live to old age as she had been born at Pamel on May 9 1811. She came from a family with six children, three boys and three girls, and, in 1834, married Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1811 - 1881) who probably followed her to the Koeistraat where her ancestors had lived for some time.
Maria Elisabeth and Joannes had eight children, one of which was stillborn, and another died very young.
On my father's side I descend from their second daughter Antonia ;
on my mother's side I descend from their youngest child Felix - this has been explained in a previous article on this blog.

Gisteren
21 juli is mijn nationale feestdag.

Nothing new under the sun

July 18 1719
Cornelius Sterckx died at Pamel Kriebrug on July18 1719 (possibly 1718).
According to the 1693 census he was a well to do single farmer (pachter) who tilled some 15 ha (45 dagwand 44 roeden). He employed two maids, and finally married one of them in 1694.
She died in 1708 ; his second wife died in 1713. His third wife, Catharina Van Caulaert, survived him. Up to now, I know almost nothing about her but I read somewhere that she remarried. Cornelius had six children, one with his first, one with his second and four with his third wife.
Their son Nicolaus Sterckx (Pamel 1714 – 1803) had a daughter Elisabeth (Pamel 1754- Okegem 1799) who became the first wife of Josephus called Judocus Neukermans (Okegem 1736 – 1814). Their son Adrianus Neukermans (Okegem 1788 – 1860) was the father of Amandus Neukermans (Okegem 1824 – 1857) the father of my great-grandfather Hermilianus (Okegem 1855 - 1932).
Maybe Judocus was the ancestor about whom my maternal grandfather said that he wanted to buy some "black" property from the former Ninove Abbey, which the French revolutionaries had closed down. According to the family lore, his wife withheld him by the back of his smock. A nice story, but given the fact that Hermilianus never knew his father and barely knew his grandfather, the story probably originates elsewhere in the family.
As usual, the simple law abiding people who had scruples about buying church property lost an opportunity to better themselves ; others without scruples built huge fortunes.

July 18 1864
Birth at Meerbeke of my father's maternal grandmother, Joanna Maria (call name Leontien) De Schepper. She married Petrus Joannes Ravijst (1861 -1944) and had, to the best of my present knowledge, six children. Her mother, Antonia De Vidts, formed the link between my father's family and my mother's family. This link has been addressed earlier in : "Een oude foto en een mysterie opgelost", June 7th.
Joanna Maria passed way at Meerbeke on December 11 1926.

Political correctness ...

in a 16th century version by Breughel the elder.
A more recent version is to be found on : http://www.artnotoil.org.uk/gallery/v/2006/TheBlindLeadingTheBlind---T.jpg.html, but these are not blind, just greedy.
