Some updates found in the second edition of Dr Herman Van Isterdael's "Families en personen te Okegem ...".
Not only the work holds proof that my ancestor Jacobus Neukermans was born in Denderwindeke in 1695. It gives an additional generation in my ascendancy : Petrus Neukermans and his wife Anna Van den Houte, who lived in in Denderwindeke ; this is another link with the Van den Houte family, a name which pops up in different branches of my family tree. The "provenance" of Jacobus had been a mystery for years, ever since my uncle Geen and his cousin Albert started their research.
It also gives a wealth of information concerning the ascendancy of Jacobus's wife Maria De Winne. In the first edition of his magistral work, Dr Van Isterdael had not been able to link Maria to the De Winne families in Okegem. A small piece of paper in the registers has solved that mystery. He now has proof of her ascendancy which results in several additional generations in Okegem, Iddergem a.s.o., including an additional link to the Muylaert family. I haven't yet added these generations to my ancestor chart. I hope that my eye problems will be "solved" in a couple of months, which would allow me to focus on that study again : but in the meantime, I know that another small piece of the veil has be lifted ...

A possible breakthrough
For years I have been trying to find where the first two Neukermans in Okegem came from. I was (and am) convinced that they were related, but I haven't yet fully clarified that link.
-- Andreas Neukermans (son of Judocus) married Barbara Van de Waterloop in Okegem in 1698.
-- Jacobus Neukermans, son of Petrus, married Maria De Winne in Okegem in 1717. They are my ancestors. Jacobus probably stranded in Okegem during a visit to Andreas and Barbara.
I have been looking a bit more closely at the data of Rik Van Hauwe (http://www.rikvanhauwe.be/) and am now almost satisfied that I have found the origins of Jacobus. I always considered the possibility that he might have been born in Denderwindeke - but up to now I had found no convincing link.
I am not fully certain still, but there is a lot of circumstantial evidence which makes me think that Jacobus Neuckermans was born in Denderwindeke in 1694.
Rik Van Hauwe has copied his birth i.e. baptism on "January 30 1694", but remarks that there must be an error in the records (he adds that it is not the only error in that period) because Nicolaas, an elder brother of Jacobus, was baptised on December 12 1693.
This Jacobus was a son of Petrus Neuckermans from Denderwindeke, who married Anna Vanden Haute. Petrus and Anna had six sons in Denderwindeke.
A Petrus Neuckermans and an Anna Vanden Haute were godparents of some of the children of Joannes Neukermans from Denderwindeke who married Joanna Asselman from Okegem. And Joanna's mother was Anna Van de Waterloop, a sister of Barbara Van de Waterloop who married Andreas Neuckermans.
The circumstantial evidence is mounting ... and keeps mounting when one looks at the godparents of the children of Jacobus and Maria De Winne.

A couple of days ago, I reported a dramatic event in Ninove in the 19th century in the post "Drama".
I now discovered another very bad one, to which I am directly related, as the husband is my great-great-grandfather Karel Timmermans (Meerbeke 1812 - 1883). Karel was a shopkeeper and farmer. In 1839 he married Henrietta Maximiliana D'Hauwer (Meerbeke ca 1814 - Ninove 1854). They had seven children in Ninove :
Eduardus (October 13 1841 - February 23 1843) ;
Philomena (December 12 1843 - April 4 1844) ;
Joanna (February 22 1845 - May 15 1845) ;
Petronilla Amanda (April 9 1846 - March 18 1847 ) ;
Joannes (September 12 1848 - January 20 1849) ;
Cornelis (April 25 1850 - ?) ;
Philomon (February 28 1853 - September 30 1853).
Just study these dates : only Cornelis possibly survived childhood. Their mother followed them into the grave on May 10 1854.
On May 13 1857 Karel remarried Maria Anna Van den Houte, born in Lieferinge in 1825 ; the marriage was consecrated in Meerbeke. I haven't yet researched all their children : I know two two of them. My great-grandfather Jozef was born in Meerbeke on December 8 1858 and died there on October 11 1929.

The last couple of days I have been working on the "Gezinsreconstructies 1599 - 1833" for Lieferinge prepared by Edward De Geyter.
This is not the first time I express my utter gratitude to the many people who have dug in dusty, sometimes almost illegible parish registers to come up with the composition, through time, of the various families who have lived in a given parish. Without them, genealogy would be a thousand times more difficult. One still has to check the data, but at least one has a path to follow.
I am interested in de Van den Houte family in Lieferinge. My great great grandmother Anna Maria Van den Houte was born there in 1825.
In the parish registers I scan all the articles mentioning the Van den Houte name to see if there is any link to my ancestry.
I found a couple Breyssens Gaspar x Van den Haute Joanna. Joanna died in 1727 and her name then was written down as Van Authem. Minor problem (the variations of the name in the different acts are huge).

Anna Maria, the maternal grandmother of my great-grandfather Jozef Timmermans (Meerbeke 1858 - 1929) died in Lieferinge where she had been born on November 12 1784.

Philippus (jr) was a son of the rather infamous Philippus (de) Colins, lord of Lieferinge and Heetvelde, who married Anna Maria de Schrevel, baronne de Callandt. The baroness died in 1747. Her husband died in 1777 and is buried in the church in Lieferinge.
But Petronella leads us once more to a De Vidts family. Her father was Petrus Van den Houte, "ex Marcke" and her mother Joanna De Vidts from Lieferinge.
Petrus was the son of another Petrus, who lived in Meerbeke. Joanna De Vidts was a daughter of Cornelius De Vidts (Lieferinge) and Van den Borre Joanna Elisabeth. I have no dates yet for these ancestors, but I assume that somewhere in a distant past there was a link between the De Vidts family in Lieferinge and the De Vidts family in Pamel. But the forementioned source yields no clue.
Back to the five (**) children of the unfortunate Philippus De Colins and Petronella Van den Houte :
-- Vincentius, born in Lieferinge in 1782. He died there in 1809.
-- Anna Maria, my ancestor.
-- Theresia Alexandrina Felicia, born in Lieferinge in 1787. She died there in 1800, three days before her father.
-- Albertus Maximilianus, born in Lieferinge in 1790.
-- Adriana Antonia, born in Lieferinge in 1794. She married in Gooik in 1823.
In 1811 Anna Marie De Colins married Philippus (Maximilianus Albertus) Van den Houte (Lieferinge 1779 - 1849). Philippus de Colins (jr), forementioned, was his godfather as well as his father in law, but died in 1800, years before his daughter's wedding.
Anna Maria De Colins and Philippus Van den Houte had five children I know of :
-- Adriana Josepha, born in Lieferinge in 1813.
-- Joanna Maximina, born in Lieferinge in 1814.
-- Jan Baptist, born in Lieferinge in 1816.
-- Maria Anna, born in Lieferinge in 1825. She was the second spouse of my great-great-grandfather Karel Timmermans (Meerbeke 1812 - 1883). She was my great-great-grandmother.
-- Maria Theresia, born in Lieferinge in 1828.
A lot more digging and study is required to get a clear overview of this intricate ragweb of relationships in and around Lieferinge in the17th, 18th and 19th century ...

(**) In my own research I have a marriage - in 1821 - of Angeline, daughter of Philippus and Petronella, but without further data. Neither Angeline, nor her husband, nor the marriage are mentioned in the Gezinsreconstructies - an oversight ? But the Gezinsreconstructies do mention an Angelina Christina, godmother to a daughter of Adriana Antonia.

Petronilla Van den Houte died in Lieferinge on December 22 1818. She was a daughter of Petrus Van den Houte ("ex Marcke" but his father lived in Meerbeke) and Joanna De Vidts (ex Lieferinge - yet another link to that family name).
She survived her husband Sieur Philippe Maximilien Sigmonde Cornille De Colins (born in Mons ca 1757) by eighteen years. They were married in Lieferinge in 1781. He died in 1800 and was "mayeur" (mayor) of Lieferinge at his death. He had lost his heritage around 1780 - I have told the story before (see post : "August 11 1777").
They had five children. Anna Maria was their second child : she was born on November 12 1784 and died in 1839. She married Philippus Van den Houte, born in Lieferinge in 1779 with a Colins as godfather, died in 1749 - the various links between the Van den Houte and the Colins families still have to be clarified.

My great-grandfather Josephus Timmermans was born in Meerbeke on December 8 1858 as a son of Charles Timmermans (Meerbeke 1812 - 1883) and his second spouse Maria Anna Van den Houte, born in Lieferinge in 1825. I haven't yet reconstructed the family of Charles and his two spouses.
The reason is that without a rigorous research structure one gets lost in the "sea" of Timmermans in Meerbeke in the 19th century. I thus decided to systematically note down each and every act with a Timmermans in it, family or not. That is the only way to get a correct overview of the various Timmermans branches. As stated before (and up to now), I have found three apparently unrelated branches, but two of them go back to a common ancestor ; the third one probably does too - but that remains to be proven.
Josephus married Elisabeth Goessens in Nederhasselt in 1883 ; Elisabeth was born in Brussels in 1862 and died in Meerbeke in 1934. They had thirteen children and lived in one of the oldest farms in Meerbeke : the Schalkom. Thus my grandfather was Pieje uit "t Schalkom. I have to find out still how Charles, or maybe even his father Philippus, "landed" in that farm.

In the almost unbelievable age of 97, Nicolaes Timmermans died in Meerbeke, where he had been born on September 27 1711. He was a son of Joannes Timmermans (Gooik 1686 - Meerbeke 1769) and Maria Anna De Vleeschauwer (Meerbeke 1683 - 1761).
Nicolaes married twice ; first in 1736 with Petronella Van Eesbeke (Meerbeke 1706 -1772), then with Maria Berlindis Du Mongh (Meerbeke 1745 - 1834).
At my last count (my research is not yet complete) he had six children with each of his wives.

His second wife was Maria Anna Van den Houte, born in Lieferinge in 1825. I haven't yet looked up her death certificate or all their children.

Philippe Pierre Jacques Colins died on that day and was buried in the church at Lieferinge, where his tombstone reportedly can be seen to this day, although I haven't checked that yet.
According to local lore his tombstone was ready long before his death and was placed a couple of centimeters above the church floor, so that no one should ever step on it. Not exactly a sign of humility ... He married Marie Anne de Schrevel who died in 1747 and they had three children : Maximilien, Philippe and Marie Antoinette.
He was lord (heer, seigneur) of Lieferinge and Heetvelde and lived in the "Waterkasteeltje" in Oetingen. He was a knight of the "cour souveraine" of Hainaut and "gentilhomme à la noblesse du pays et comté du Hainaut".
He distributed his possessions among his three children in 1764, and by the later years of the Ancien Régime, they had blown it all. Local folklore still tell some stories about their extravagant, degenerate squanderings and their contempt for ordinary people. Some memories survived in my family too, although in family lore the miscreants incorrectly were named Timmermans, not Colins.
From what I learned about the last two generations at least, they were typical exemples of very minor nobility who misbehaved tragically. But they paid the price ...
I still have a lot of resarch to do on this branch of my ancestors, but Philippe Maximilien Sigmonde Cornille (De) Colins was born in Mons ca 1757 and died, probably pennyless, in Lieferinge ca 1800. He married Petronilla Van den Houte (who died in Lieferinge in 1818).
Their daughter Anna Maria (De) Colins (Lieferinge 1780 - 1839) married Philippus Van den Houte (Lieferinge 1779 - 1849), and their daughter Maria Anna Van den Houte (Lieferinge 1825 - Meerbeke) married my great-great-grandfather Charles Timmermans (Meerbeke 1812 - 1883). On July 25 1694 Judocus Timmermans passed away at Gooik. He had been baptized at Gooik on September 21 1649 and married Catharina (Maria) Appelmans (Gooik 1656 - 1733), who remarried after his death.
They had two children : Cornelius lived for less than a month in november 1679 and Joannes who was born at Gooik in 1686 died at Meerbeke in 1769. He married Maria Anna De Vleeschauwer (Meerbeke 1683 - 1761).
Their son Nicolaes Timmermans - who married twice - lived for almost one hundred years in Meerbeke - from 1711 to 1808. Both father and son had a lot of children. One of them was Philippus (Meerbeke 1740 - 1814). He was a son of Nicolaes and of his first wife Petronella Van Eesbeke (Meerbeke 1706 - 1772). Philippus also married twice and his second wife was Petronella Van den Berghe (Meerbeke 1766 - 1824).
According to my research, this Philippus was the father of Charles Timmermans, who was born at Meerbeke in 1812, when his father was 71 and his mother 46. That is the reason why, a couple of almost ironclad checks notwithstanding, I still hesitate to claim for certain that this Philippus is the real father of Charles.
There are three possibilities : either the data are correct and Philippus is the real father ; or the data are correct and Philippus is the legal, but not the real father ; or an - improbable - mistake slipped in my research and the father of Charles is another Philippus Timmermans altogether.
In genealogy nothing ever is absolutely certain, but to be "as certain" as possible, I will have to reconstitute all the Timmermans families in Meerbeke in the 18th en 19th century - and there are lots of them. This will require very significant additional research but will pay off eventually as I will get a reliable overview of the exact relationships (or lack of it) between all the people bearing the same family name.

On July 11 1839 Anna Maria (De) Colins - the “de” appears to have been added by the end of the 18th century - died at Lieferinge, where she had been born on November 12 1780. She was at the centre of a fantastic family lore, about which more will be written later, and which proved true after almost 200 years of oral transmission.
Anna Maria was a daughter of “sieur” Philippe Maximilien Sigmonde (?) Cornille De Colins and of Petronilla Van den Houte. The Colins family can be traced back to the 14th century. Anna Maria thus descended from a relatively well known family with a lot of soldiers, priests, nuns and civil servants in Flanders and Hainaut. The family had multiple branches, one of which - Colins de Ham - produced one of the “fathers” of sociology. The Colins family will also be addressed in a future article.
Anna Maria’s direct ascendants were “heren” (lords) of Lieferinge and Heetvelde, but wasted their holdings during the 18th century. Local lore still holds some frightening stories about these "gentlemen".
Anna Maria married Philippus Van den Houte, a local farmer, in 1812. One of their children was Maria Anna Van den Houte, born at Lieferinge in 1825, who became the second spouse of Charles Timmermans in 1857. Charles was born and died in Meerbeke (1812 – 1883). Maria Anna was listed as a maid, and later a farmer’s wife. From (relative) richness to (almost) rags in a couple of generations …
