I sometimes think that future genealogists will have serious problems to decode the multiple possible relationships - and the potential confusion about family names - which have developed recently or are developping still. But that is nothing new. Even with the single form of religious marriage (plus births out of wedlock) things could get complicated too.
The following comes from "Gezinsreconstructie gemeente Pamel 1622 - 1796" by Rita Van Isveldt, who, by the way, has contributed a very significant part to my ancestry chart.
I shall give the year of marriage and of death only. The information is complicated enough as it is.
My ancestor Cornelius Sterckx married three times :
-- in 1694 : Elisabeth Van der Beeren : they had two children (one still born). Elisabeth died in 1708 ;
-- in 1708 : Maria Huylenbroeck : they had one child. Maria died in 1713 ;
-- in 1713 : my ancestor Catharina Van Cauwelaert : they had four children.
Cornelius died in 1719.
In 1720, Catharina Van Cauwelaert remarried Joannes Van den Bossche with whom she had four children.
After Catharina died in 1751, Joannes married Joanna Maria De Vidts : they had six children. Joannes died in 1763.
And the show went on : Joanna Maria De Vidts married Bernardus Smet, probably in the mid- or late sixties. Maria Anna had another six children and died in 1779.
Bernardus Smet married two more times :
in 1780 he married Elisabeth Kestens and they had one child. Elisabeth died in 1784 ;
in 1784 he married another Elisabeth, family name Van Linthoudt : they had seven kids. Elisabeth died in 1804 and Bernardus followed in 1812.
I repeat :
Cornelius Sterckx had seven children out of three marriages ;
Catharina Van Cauwelaert had eight children out of two marriages ;
Joannes Van den Bossche had ten children out of two marriages ;
Joanna Maria De Vidts had twelve children out of two marriages ;
Bernardus Smet had fourteen kids out of three marriages.
My ancestor Nicolaes Sterckx (Pamel 1714 - 1803) - a son of Cornelius Sterckx and Catharina Van Cauwelaert, thus had three types of siblings on his father's side, and two on his mother's side. But then his stepfather had two types of children too ... and the story continues ...

Cornelius Sterckx

Cornelius Sterckx, a relatively well to do farmer - he had two maids - died in Kriebrug, Pamel, on July 18 1719. He was a son of Joannes Sterckx and Maria Cobbaert, who died in 1679.
In 1694 he married one of his maids, Elisabeth Van der Beeren, with whom he had two children :
- NN, a female deathborn, which was baptised at home in 1696 ;
- Joannes (Pamel 1698 - 1701).
Elisabeth died in 1708, and, slightly more than six months after her death, Cornelius remarried Maria Huylenbroeck (Pamel 1681 - 1713), a short marriage again. They had one child :
- Jan Baptist Sterckx (Pamel 1713, who lived for about ten days.
This time, Cornelius remarried after four months, in the year in which he lost his second wife and his third child. His third wife was Catharina Van Cauwelaert (until now I used the form Van Caulaert for her, but it is the same name).
They had four children :

Anna Sneppe was born in Ste Katharina Lombeek. According to one source, she may have been a daughter to Anthoon who died in 1668 and to Catharina De Raeymaecker, but I have reasons to doubt that.
Anna married Guillelmus Van Overstraeten (St Kwintens Lennik 1659 - Ste Katharina Lombeek 1731) and they had a daughter Elisabeth Van Overstraeten (Ste Katharina Lombeek 1692 - Pamel 1741). She married three times.
In 1713 she married Adrianus De Vidts (Pamel 1688 - 1724) with whom she had six children. In 1725 she married Maximiliaen Van Cauwelaert (born in Onze Lieve Vrouw Lombeek and who died in Pamel in 1741) with whom she had another six children.
Their daughter Catharina Theresia Van Cauwelaert (Pamel 1729 - 1805) first married Judocus De Vidts (Pamel 1703 - 1750) with whom she had two children. Then she married Joannes Josephus Kestens with whom she had thirteen children.
I descend from Catharina's oldest child Petrus Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1749 - 1793) who had ten children wit Carolina Van der Straeten (Ternat ca 1753 - Pamel 1801). This couple lived and died in the Piezelstraat.
Their sixth child was Joannes Franciscus (Pamel 1784 - 18369) who married Maria Elisabeth Van Lierde (Pamel 1790 - 1838). They had eight children.
As stated oftentimes before, Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1811 - 1881), my maternal great-great-grandfather and my paternal great-great-great-grandfather, was their second child.

Leonardus (Lenaert) Van Cauwelaert, who had been born ca 1650, died in Sint Kwintens Lennik. He was married to Anna Van Laethem (ca 1650 - Sint Kwintens Lennik 1728).
Maximiliaan Van Cauwelaert was one of their six children. He was born in Onze Lieve Vrouw Lombeek and died in Pamel, Ledebergplaats, in 1741. He was the third husband of Elisabeth Van Overstraeten (Sinte Katharina Lombeek 1692 - Pamel 1741). Judocus married Maria Van der Kelen in 1650, and they had 10 children, of whom about one in three died young. Petrus De Vidts (Pamel 1655 - 1726) was number four and a meisenier like his father. He was an alderman (schepen) of Pamel.

Catharina Van Nieuwenhove died in Pamel where she had been born on August 12 1663. She married Petrus De Vidts (Pamel 1655 - 1726).
Judocus De Vidts (Pamel 1703 - 1750) was the last of their three children. He married Catharina Theresia Van Cauwelaert (Pamel 1729 -1805).

Catharina Theresia was born in Pamel, the third child of Maximiliaan Van Cauwelaert (born in Onze Lieve Vrouw Lombeek and who died in Pamel 1741) and Elisabeth Van Overstraeten (Sint Katharina Lombeek 1692 - Pamel 1741).
Catharina Theresia had two children with her first husband Judocus De Vidts (Pamel 1703 - 1750) and - if my sources are correct - thirteen with her second husband Joannes Josephus Kestens (Pamel 1719 - 1778).

Anna Van Laethem was born ca 1650 and died in Sint Kwintens Lennik on December 10 1728. She married Leonardus Van Cauwelaert, born ca 1650 too, who died in Sint Kwintens Lennik in 1728.
Their son Maximiliaan (born in Onze Lieve Vrouw Lombeek ?) died in Pamel in 1741.
His daughter Catharina Theresia (Pamel 1729 - 1805) married twice. She was the mother of Petrus Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1749 - 1793).

Catharina Theresia Van Cauwelaert died in Pamel, where she was born on February 14 1729.
She had two children with her first husband Judocus De Vidts (Pamel 1703 - 1750) and thirteen with her second husband Joannes Josephus Kestens (Pamel 1719 - 1778).
Catharina Theresia became a meisenier in 1751 ; her first husband was a meisenier in 1715 (at the age of ten ?).
The De Vidts line which I have used up to now comes from a very reliable source but I haven't checked it out personally.
However, mistakes do happen and at that time, even on the very same day, another Judocus (Joos) De Vidts became a meisenier. If the two have been swapped in the line, the previous generations would be different.
However, a quick check shows that the possible swap would not be all bad news.
The other Judocus was born in 1691 and disappeared in the mists of time : no marriage, no death reported, at least not in Pamel, so the "exchange" cannot be excluded. But even if he were the "correct one", nothing drastic would happen in the male line, because both were grandchildren of Judocus De Vidts (Pamel 1627 - 1694) : the first one by Petrus (Pamel 1655 - 1726), the second one by Martinus (Pamel 1652 - 1735) ; the female line would be different.
To be examined further : once more the importance of reconstructing the entire families becomes apparent.

July 5 1694
On July 5th 1694 Joos De Vidts died at Pamel. He was born at Pamel on April 20 1627 and had ten children with Maria Van der Kelen (Pamel February 15 1625 - Pamel October 7 1676). At this point in time, we know his forebears up to his great-grandfather, and then the family fades into the mists of history.
Joos became a meisenier in Grimbergen on April 8 1669 - a copy of the letter confirming this has survived until now, although there is some confusion about the precise date. He was a well to do tenant farmer (pachter) working about 23 dagwand, which is roughly 6 hectares - and he even had a maid. But at least one third of his children died young.
