Van mijn acht overgrootouders zijn er maar twee die mijn geboorte meebeleefd hebben (Petrus en Blondine). Een derde moet nog geweten hebben dat mijn moeder zwanger was (Felix). En met de oudste van mijn overgrootouders (opnieuw Blondine) heb ik een link tot 1849, 161 jaar ver.

En toch weet ik me zeer eng met hen verbonden !

De Schepper
One of my great grandmothers was Joanna Maria (Leontien) De Schepper in Meerbeke, the mother of my paternal grandmother. I already knew Leontien's paternal grandfather and grandmother, but there it stopped for the De Schepper family.
Leontien's mother of course was Antonia De Vidts, an elder sister of my mother's maternal grandfather Felix De Vidts. I explained this in detail in a number of earlier posts. I can trace that De Vidts line back to the early sixteen hundreds.
But as stated before, the line of the De Schepper's stopped with Joanna Maria's grandfather Judocus. Today, digging through the data of Rik Van Hauwe, I found - quite by accident - a link to Rita Van Isveldt's data for Pamel, which allowed me to add seven generations to the De Schepper line : seven couples and their children. Not bad for one day's work, isn't it ? So, another line is opened up to the early 1600s.
My eyes are terribly tired. But that's OK : the winnings are great ! Details will follow.

On that day Maria Elisabeth Van der Sleyen died in the Koestraat in Pamel. She had been born on May 11 1811. Her parents were Michael (Pamel 1758 - 1827) and Petronella Van Eeckhoudt (Pamel 1771 - 1828). In 1834 she married Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1811 - 1881). They were farmers.
They had eight children :
-- Henrica (Pamel 1835 - 1873) who married Jacobus De Doncker in Pamel in 1864 ; Jacobus, born in Pamel in 1838, remarried after Henrica's death and got a divorce from his second wife in 1882 ; he may have died in Lille, date unknown.
-- Philomena (Pamel 1837 - 1870) who married Simon De Roock (Pamel 1838 - 1909) in Pamel in 1864. He too remarried after Philomena's death ;
-- Antonia (Pamel 1840 - I haven't yet researched the date of her death, probably in Meerbeke) who married Ludovicus De Schepper in Pamel in 1862. They were the great-grandparents of my father ;
-- Petrus Josephus (Pamel 1843 - 1891) who married Appolonia De Paepe in Pamel in 1873) ;
-- NN a baby in 1845 - it died on the day of its birth ;
-- Benedictus, who lived for almost three months in Pamel in 1847 ;

De Schepper Joanna Maria was born in Meerbeke. She was my father's maternal grandmother. Since the forementioned post I have not yet had the opportunity to continue my research on her ancestry or descendance.

Ludovicus De Schepper was born in Meerbeke ; a son to Judocus born ca 1788 and to Joanna De Dobbeleer, born ca 1791.
In 1862, Ludovicus married Antonia De Vidts, born in Pamel in 1840, and they had four children at least. One of them was my great-grandmother Joanna Maria (Leontien) De Schepper (Meerbeke 1864 - 1926), the mother of my paternal grandmother Rosalia Margarteha Ravijst (Meerbeke 1892 - Gent 1973).
Ludovicus has been a miller's aid, later probably a farmer, maybe a miller himself and - according to family lore, but as yet unconfirmed - a rural policeman ("petjen de sjampetter").
Antonia most probably was the godmother of her niece, my maternal grandmother Maria Antonia De Vidts (Pamel 1885 - Okegem 1949). My mother once told me that petjen de sjampetter was the godfather of her mother, but that was before I discovered (unfortunately after my mother's death) that his wife was her grandfather's sister.

Joanna Straetman, born in Okegem on March 9 1697, passed away on May 30 1762. In 1726 she had married Joannes Van der Speeten (Denderhoutem 1702 - Okegem 1761).
They had five children. Petrus Van der Speeten (Okegem 1733 - 1786) was number three. In 1757 he married Joanna De Mol (Okegem 1733 - 1791).
Petrus and Joanna had nine children. Cornelius (1772 - 1806) was number eight. In 1795 he married Alexandrina De Schepper (Okegem 1775 - 1853) with whom he had six children. After his death Alexandrina married Petrus Judocus Neukermans (Okegem 1772 - 1812) of the second Neukermans branch in Okegem. With him she had another 3 children.
Alexandrina Van der Speeten (Okegem 1795 - 1831) was the oldest of the nine children of Alexandrina De Schepper. In 1818 she married Andreas Asselman (Okegem 1795 - 1875). They had five children of which Catherina Asselman (Okegem 1823 - 1892) was the third. Andreas remarried after Alexandrina's death but had no more children.
Catharina Asselman married Amandus Neukermans (Okegem 1824 - 1857). They had five children. My great-grandfather Hermilianus Neukermans (Okegem 1855 - 1932) was number four and their first son.

My paternal grandmother Rosalia Margaretha (Margriet) Ravijst was born in Meerbeke. She was one of (at least) six children of Petrus Joannes Ravijst (Nieuwenhove 1861 - Meerbeke 1944) and Joanna Maria (Leontien) De Schepper (Meerbeke 1864 - 1926).
She married Pieter Jozef Timmermans (Meerbeke 1886 - 1953) and they had seven children, five of which lived to adulthood. My father was their second child.
Margriet died in the university hospital in Ghent on December 2 1973 - exactly twenty years minus two days after her husband, and one day before my 33d birthday.
She was the longest lived of my grandparents, and not the easiest of characters. Seen from that point of view, I cannot deny she was my grandmother !
I know little or nothing about her forebears : her father was a natural child - father unknown so he bore his mother's name ; her father's mother married but I do not know where (the few surviving family members do not have the information) and up to now I have been unable to trace the provenance of his maternal grandparents beyond the early 19th century, but then I haven't made a priority of that research. I still have a very significant lot of work to do on this branch of my genealogy.
But as I stated often enough before, my grandmother's maternal grandmother Antonia De Vidts, born in Pamel in 1840, was the sister of my mother's maternal grandfather, Felix De Vidts (Pamel 1853 - 1940).

Cornelius Van der Speeten died in Okegem, where he had been born on June 12 1772. A short life span, but not unusually short in those times. He was an agricultural hand (landbouwer, werkman) and lived in the Fonteinstraat. He was the first husband of Alexandrina De Schepper Okegem 1775 - 1853). They married in 1795, and at the beginning of their marriage they lived with Alexandrina's parents.
They had six children of which Alexandrina Van der Speeten was the eldest (Okegem 1795 - 1835). Like her father and unlike her mother she died young. Her mother had another three children with her second husband (see the post : "February 17 1786").

This is the branch of my family I know almost nothing about - and to be honest, I haven't really started systematic research yet, given the fact that so many other lines were to be had much more easily in reliable published sources.
I do not know where Rosalia's father, born around 1805 - 1810 came from ; I do not know where he married ; I do not yet know whom and where Rosalia married after she had Petrus Joannes. I hear stories about half sisters in Tollembeek but very few people who could put me on the right track are alive today. And the variations on the family name are numerous (Ravijst, Ravijts, Ravyts, Ravyts, Raveyst, Raveyts, Ravats, Ravets, possibly Favets a.s.o.)
A lot of research remains to be done.

I hear stories about half sisters in Tollembeek but very few people who could put me on the right track are alive today. And the variations on the family name are numerous (Ravijst, Ravijts, Ravyts, Ravyts, Raveyst, Raveyts, Ravats, Ravets, possibly Favets a.s.o.)
A lot of research remains to be done.

Alexandrina Van der Speeten died in Okegem, where she had been born on September 20 1795 as the eldest child of Cornelius Van der Speeten (Okegem 1772 - 1806) and Alexandrina De Schepper (Okegem 1775 - 1853).
Alexandrina Van der Speeten married Andreas Asselman (Okegem 1795 - 1875) in 1818. They had five children : de middle one Catharina Asselman (Okegem 1823 - 1892) was the mother of my great-grandfather Hermilianus Neukermans (Okegem 1855 - 1932).

Death in Meerbeke of Joanna Maria (Leontien) De Schepper, my great-grandmother, the mother of my father's mother.

December 2 1973
On that day, my grandmother Rosalia Margaretha (Margriet) Ravijst died in the UZ in Ghent. She was born in Meerbeke on March 20 1892 as a daughter of Petrus Joannes Ravijst (Nieuwenhove 1861 - Meerbeke 1944) and of Joanna Maria (Leontien) De Schepper (Meerbeke 1864 - 1926).She married Pieter Jozef Timmermans (Meerbeke 1886 - 1953) and they had seven children, five of whom survived to adulthood - see post "My paternal grandparents". Most of their married life, they lived on the Hemelrijk in Meerbeke where my grandfather was a carriage maker, carpenter and fruit grower.

She has been sickly most of her life, but still survived her husband by twenty years minus a couple of days (he died on December 4 1953 in Ninove) ... and their oldest grandchild was born on December 3 1940.

She was the last of my four grandparents to die ; still I know less about her than about the other three.
The provenance of her great-grandfather Jan Baptiste, born ca 1805 - 1808 remains a mystery to me, as well as the stories surrounding her father Petrus Joannes, who was born out of wedlock while his mother was a servant in a castle (a story told a thousand times in the 19th and early 20yh century).
I know her grandmother married, probably in Tollembeek, but I ignore the name of her husband and of her children. The (few) surviving family members, old enough to know something, cannot help me any further.
There are Ravijst (Ravijts, Ravyts etc ...) families in the region of Asse, Lebbeke and Opwijk, but no link has yet been found ; idem for the region of Tollembeek.
Maybe the family lore that a soldier of Napoleon married a local girl may be true after all : there are very comparable family names in France. And I must confess that the further study of this branch of my family has not been a priority up to now - there was so much to collect elsewhere ... without too much effort.

She married Petrus Asselman (Okegem 1729 - 1792) and had seven children. She died in Okegem on November 28 1815.
Franciscus (Okegem 1769 - 1865) was their third child - he lived to be 95.
His son Andreas (Okegem 1795 - 1875) was the eldest of seven and had a daughter Catharina Asselman (Okegem 1823 - 1892).
Catharina was the third of five and married Amandus Neukermans (Okegem 1824 - 1857).
My great-grandfather Hermilianus Neukermans (Okegem 1855 - 1932) was the fourth of their five children. Hermilianus has been named a number of times before.

I forgot to mention that Petrus Asselman died on that day in Okegem, where he had been baptised on November 19 1729. He had been alderman (schepen) of Okegem in 1765 - 1768 and in 1770 - 1773 and apparently was poor (he had to borrow money). He had 11 children, four with his first wife and seven with his second wife Maria Francisca De Schepper (Iddergem 1744 - Okegem 1815).
