Van mijn acht overgrootouders zijn er maar twee die mijn geboorte meebeleefd hebben (Petrus en Blondine). Een derde moet nog geweten hebben dat mijn moeder zwanger was (Felix). En met de oudste van mijn overgrootouders (opnieuw Blondine) heb ik een link tot 1849, 161 jaar ver.

Felix De Vidts (Pamel 1853 - Pamel 1940) en Blondina Muylaert (Denderhoutem 1849 - Pamel 1942).
Maar het werkelijke geheugen reikt veel minder ver. Ik heb geen enkele persoonlijke herinnering aan die mensen. Wat ik over hen weet komt van mijn ouders of uit mijn opzoekingen ...
En toch weet ik me zeer eng met hen verbonden !

Livinus Meganck died in Zandbergen. He was married to Josepha De Fru who died there in 1839, about one year and a half after her husband.
They has a son Franciscus Meganck who was born ca 1798 in Nederhasselt and died there in 1869. He married Regina Menschaert (Nederhasselt ca 1799 - 1859).
Franciscus and Regina had a daughter Virginia (Nederhasselt 1834 - 1917) who married Petrus Josephus Goessens (Nederhasselt 1836 - 1928). We have met this couple before.
Their eldest daughter was Maria Elisabeth Goessens (Brussel 1862 - Meerbeke 1934), one of my great-grandmothers.

Petrus Josephus Goessens, 92 years old, died in Nederhasselt on his wife's birthday, but Virginia Meganck had preceeded him in death by 11 years. (Nederhasselt 1834 - 1917).
Petrus Josephus had been born in Nederhasselt on January 24 1836.

Virginia Meganck was born in Nederhasselt, a daughter to (Joannes ?) Franciscus Meganck (Aspelare 1799 - Nederhasselt 1869) and to Regina (Victoria ?) Menschaert (Geraardsbergen 1792 - Nederhasselt 1859).
When Virginia married Petrus Josephus Goessens (Nederhasselt 1836 - 1928) in 1871, they already had three children. In total, they had seven children.
Their oldest child, Maria Elisabeth Goessens, was born in Brussels in 1862, married in Nederhasselt in 1883, and died in Meerbeke in 1934.
Maria Elisabeth and her husband Josephus Timmermans (Meerbeke 1858 - 1929) were my great-grandparents.

I still have some checking to do for the first names of Virginia's parents, and for their dates of birth. (Joannes ?) Franciscus was a miller's son (and a miller himself ?) and Regina (Victoria ?) was the daughter of a Menschaert-Menschaert marriage of apparently relatively well-to-do farmers.

Joannes Baptiste Goessens, born ca 1790, died in Nederhasselt. He was married to Joanna Waegeman, born ca 1794. I haven't researched that family yet, except for one son : Petrus Josephus Goessens (Nederhasselt 1836 - 1928) who married Virginia Meganck (Nederhasselt 1834 - 1917).

Regina Menschaert died in Nederhasselt, where she had been born ca 1799. She married Franciscus Meganck (Nederhasselt ca 1798 - 1869). I still have to look up their children but one : Virginia Meganck (Nederhasselt 1834 - 1917), my great-great-grandmother.

In 1883 she married Josephus Timmermans (Meerbeke 1858 - 1929) and according to what I heard from my parents, they had 11 children. I counted 13 in the archives, but there is some confusion about the first names, which I shall have to clear up, if that is still possible. How soon memory fades ...
There is some mystery surrounding Maria Elisabeth (I published her photo in an earlier post). She was born in Brussels, while her father and mother were born, married and died in Nederhasselt. She was the eldest of seven children, three of whom were born out of wedlock and legalised when their parents finally married in Nederhasselt in 1871.
I have been helped in this search by a person who, although totally unknown to me until a couple of years ago, is a nephew twice removed of Maria Elisabeth (his grandmother was her sister).
Maybe Petrus and Virginia had found work in Brussels, maybe they had eloped because Virginia's parents did not agree with their relationship (my contact remembers to have heard that the "bride's " family were relatively well to do). Maybe they fled to Brussels to avoid the scandal of the illegitimate birth, but then their two other illegitimate daughters were born in Nederhasselt. According to my distant relative, they finally married after both Virginia's parents had died.
How soon memory fades ... my father might have known the full story, although I consider that improbable - kids were not told that kind of stuff - they had to leave the room when a conversation went that way - his parents certainly did know it. But my grandfather passed away in 1953 when I was still a kid ; his spouse in 1973, long before I knew enough about the family to ask her anything about this situation. And she was not the kind of person who would have reacted favorably to that kind of question anyway ! And now, most probably, it will remain a mystery forever ...

My great-grandfather Josephus Timmermans was born in Meerbeke on December 8 1858 as a son of Charles Timmermans (Meerbeke 1812 - 1883) and his second spouse Maria Anna Van den Houte, born in Lieferinge in 1825. I haven't yet reconstructed the family of Charles and his two spouses.
The reason is that without a rigorous research structure one gets lost in the "sea" of Timmermans in Meerbeke in the 19th century. I thus decided to systematically note down each and every act with a Timmermans in it, family or not. That is the only way to get a correct overview of the various Timmermans branches. As stated before (and up to now), I have found three apparently unrelated branches, but two of them go back to a common ancestor ; the third one probably does too - but that remains to be proven.
Josephus married Elisabeth Goessens in Nederhasselt in 1883 ; Elisabeth was born in Brussels in 1862 and died in Meerbeke in 1934. They had thirteen children and lived in one of the oldest farms in Meerbeke : the Schalkom. Thus my grandfather was Pieje uit "t Schalkom.
