Rooting through the "Gezinsreconstructie gemeente Pamel 1622 - 1799" it becomes clear that the bubonic plague has killed a significant part of the population in the 17th century and that the Napoleonic wars came a close second.
The plague came to Pamel in 1634-1635, but the major epidemy ravaged in 1667-1669.
Let me give one exemple of the ravages of that pestilence (the following people are no relations of mine - although I have both family names in my ascendancy). And think about the human suffering and misery behind these simple facts.
Judocus De Doncker, "officier" (some kind of official), married Petronella Van Eesbeeck in Meerbeke on September 9 1660. They had three children :
Joanna was born in Pamel on June 3 1663 ; Catharina was born in Pamel on June 15 1665 ; Petronella was born in Pamel on March 19 1667.
The mother and her three kids died of the plague : Petronella, not even two years old, on November 3 1668 ; her mother on November 9 1668 ; and both Joanna and Catharina on December 15 1668. Four deaths in a family in just over a month ...
Suffering and misery : and this family was not really an exception.
Poor Judocus remarried and had another child with his second spouse. The girl, Elisabeth, lived for 80 years and was married twice. Judocus himself passed away on July 12 1698 in Pamel Poelkeveld.

Judocus De Doncker or Dokes, died on July 18 1835 in Pamel. He was a farmer and the natural son, born in 1755, Of Judoca (Josina) De Doncker (Pamel 1727 - 1799).
In 1787 he married Anna Maria De Ridder, farmer and "spinster", born in Sint Kwintens Lennik ca 1751 and who died in Pamel in 1833. Judocus was her second husband.
With her first husband she had five sons and a daughter. With Judocus she had another three children :
- Judoca (Pamel 1789 - 1814) ;
- Anna Catharina (Pamel 1791 - Okegem 1865) who in 1815 married Adrianus Neukermans (Okegem 1788 - 1860). They were the grandparents of my great-grandfather Hermilianus Neukermans (Okegem 1855 - 1932). My great-grandfather, who never knew his father Amandus (Okegem 1824 - 1857) must have known his grandmother (and maybe had some memories about his grandfather too).
- Elisabeth (born in Pamel 1794 ; she died before 1861).

Anna remarried after the death of Judocus and lived a very long life - she died at the age of approximately 95, more than double the life expectancy at that time. She had six children with Judocus and two with her second husband.
Josina had a natural son, Judocus De Doncker (Pamel 1755 - 1835). Josina married in 1768, but her husband, of which she was the second spouse and with whom she had another child, was not the father of Judocus. Josina died in Pamel on September 13 1799.

Anna Catharina De Doncker died in Okegem. She had been born in Pamel on February 28 1791 and married Adrianus Neukermans (Okegem 1788 - 1860) in Pamel in 1815.
They had six children, the fourth of which was my great-great-grandfather Amanus Neukermans (Okegem 1824 - 1857).

Anna Van der Meeren died in Pamel (approximately 95 years old ?). She had six children with her first husband Judocus De Doncker, who died in Pamel in 1732.

Anna Maria De Ridder, who had been born in Sint Kwintens Lennik in 1752, died in Pamel. She married her second husband Judocus De Doncker (Pamel 1755 - 1835) in 1787. Anna Maria had six children with her first husband and three with Judocus.

My great-great-grandfather Amandus Neukermans was born in Okegem, still under the Dutch regime. He was the fourth of six children of Adrianus (Okegem 1788 - 1860) and Anna Catharina De Doncker (Pamel 1791 - Okegem 1865).
Amandus died, 33 years old, on July 4 1857, leaving his widow Catharina Asselman (Okegem 1823 - 1892) with the care for five children.
My great-grandfather Hermilianus (Okegem 1855 - 1932) was the fourth of their children. He never knew his father.

Nicolaus Sterckx, who lived a long life, died in Pamel where he had been born on August 22 1714. He was married to Catharina Suzanna Van Tricht (Pamel 1725 - 1799).
They had five children : the eldest was Elisabeth Sterckx (Pamel 1754 - Okegem 1799). In 1778 she became the first wife of Josephus called Judocus Neukermans (Okegem 1736 - 1814) with whom she had seven children. After her death, Josephus married Maria Carolina Appelmans (Gooik ca 1769 - Okegem 1819) with whom he had another three children.
It is interesting to note that Josephus was almost 42 years old when he married for the first time, and almost 64 when he married for the second time ... He himself was the tenth of twelve children.
