Gasparus (Jaspar) Van der Sleyen was born in Pamel, a son to Judocus (Pamel 1652 - 1704) and Emmerentia De Vleeshouwer, who died in Pamel in 1707.
In 1714 Gasparus married Catharina Huylenbroeck (Pamel ca 1685 - 1751). They had eight children. I descend from number six : Ferdinandus (Pamel 1724 - 1810) who married Joanna Vernaillen (Impegem 1725 - Pamel 1791) in Okegem in 1751.
Gasparus died in Pamel on July 2 1749.
The descendance has been touched upon in various posts, including "January 22 1670" and "April 29 1724".
By the way, Joanna Vernaillen was a fifth generation descendant of Gijsbrecht Vernaillen whom we mentioned in the previous post.

Henricus Evenepoel died in Meerbeke, where he had been bailiff (baljuw) between 1600 and 1614. He was married to Petronella Pierens, who died in 1625. They had eight children : six of them became "meiseniers".
Their daughter Maria Evenepoel was born ca 1600 and died in Gooik in 1675. She became a meisenier in 1635. She married three times, including a mayor of Meerbeke who died very young.
Her third husband was Nicolaus Walravens (Pamel ca 1610 - Gooik 1666) who was farmer on hof te Kranenbroek in Poelk - Meerbeke and then moved to Gooik (Drie Egypten) where he became "drossaard". They married in 1636 and had seven children (there are sources which give other numbers).
I most probably descend from two of their children :

Willem Walravens died in St Pieters Leeuw, the cradle of the - to this day - very extended family. Guillam was an important man : in 1585 he rented three farms in Brukom. He married two or three times.

On November 29 1666, Nicolaes Walravens died in Gooik. He was the farmer ("pachter") of Hof te Kranenbroek. He was born in Pamel ca 1610 and was the third husband of Maria Evenepoel (born ca 1600, who died in Gooik ca 1671).
A fact is that both my father and my mother descend from that couple in two different lines each.
Another fact is that I still haven't verified the correct descendance.
I described the problem in my post on "September 18 1671". But the solution probably is more complicated still. I now think that Joannes Jacobus Walravens, who married Maria Thienpont, and Anna Walravens, who married Egidius Huylenbroeck, were not brother and sister but aunt and nephew. In this hypothesis, Anna was a daughter of Nicolaes and Maria ; Joannes Jacobus was a son of their son Nicolaes who married Magdalena De Ro.
More about this later ; I have some new clues. But if there is any help out there, I'd be grateful.

Maria Schandevijl was born in Pamel on May 2 1655 and died there on November 15 1734. She married Adrianus Huylenbroeck, born in Sint Kwintens Lennik, who died in Pamel in 1699. They had six children, and Maria was a widow for some 35 years.
Their daughter Catharina Huylenbroeck lived in Pamel from ca 1685 to 1751. Her son Ferdinandus Van der Sleyen (Pamel 1724 - 1810) was the sixth of eight children.
Michael Van der Sleyen was a son of Ferdinandus, the third of his five children. He lived in Pamel from 1758 to 1827.

I descend from two of their children, each time through my father and through my mother, but some of the early links still need checking.

De Dikke van Pamel
From my earliest days on I heard stories about the "Fat Man" of Pamel. He still is part of regional legends and folk lore.
Victor De Clerck was born at Pamel on June 14 1848 and died there on February 16 1885. That was a fortnight after my maternal grandmother Maria Antonia De Vidts (Pamel, January 31 1885 - Okegem September 1949) was born. Her parents, Felix De Vidts (Pamel, April 12 1853 - Pamel, June 8 1940) and Blondine Muylaert (Denderhoutem, June 4 1849 - Pamel February 10 1942), were close neighbours of Victor. Felix was a distant relative (see further).
Victor's exact weight is unknown but is reported to have been up to 300 - 350 kg. Even during his lifetime he was famous and much sought after as a curiosity. As a result he became progressively an unsociable and withdrawn, probably even embittered, individual. His life - at least the later part of it - must have been hell.
Folk lore has it that on hot days he floated on the Dender river, and that children used him as a small island to sit on. He was so big that the front door had to be broken out in order to get the huge casket out of his house.
Victor's paternal grandmother was Barbara Constantia Van der Sleyen (Pamel, March 25 1772 - Pamel, July 29 1847). Her grandparents were Jasper Van der Sleyen (Pamel, June 24 1686 - Pamel, July 2 1749) and Catharina Huylenbroeck (Pamel, ca 1685 - Pamel, March 7 1751).
Jasper and Catharina are my common ancestors with Victor. I descend from them, both through my mother (7th generation) and through my father (8th generation).

Her parents, Felix De Vidts (Pamel, April 12 1853 - Pamel, June 8 1940) and Blondine Muylaert (Denderhoutem, June 4 1849 - Pamel February 10 1942), were close neighbours of Victor. Felix was a distant relative (see further).
Victor's exact weight is unknown but is reported to have been up to 300 - 350 kg. Even during his lifetime he was famous and much sought after as a curiosity. As a result he became progressively an unsociable and withdrawn, probably even embittered, individual. His life - at least the later part of it - must have been hell.
Folk lore has it that on hot days he floated on the Dender river, and that children used him as a small island to sit on. He was so big that the front door had to be broken out in order to get the huge casket out of his house.
Victor's paternal grandmother was Barbara Constantia Van der Sleyen (Pamel, March 25 1772 - Pamel, July 29 1847). Her grandparents were Jasper Van der Sleyen (Pamel, June 24 1686 - Pamel, July 2 1749) and Catharina Huylenbroeck (Pamel, ca 1685 - Pamel, March 7 1751).
Jasper and Catharina are my common ancestors with Victor. I descend from them, both through my mother (7th generation) and through my father (8th generation).
