A busy man, the pope

According to http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/ukcorrespondents/holysmoke/sep07/popeattack.htm.

Pope Benedict XVI has made a coded but fierce attack on Muslim nations where Christians are treated as second-class citizens and Muslims are forbidden on pain of death to convert to Christianity. The Pope has spoken out against Christian persecution.

In a speech yesterday, the Pope defended “religious liberty”, which he said “includes the right to change religion, which should be guaranteed not only legally but in practice”. He also said that “all authentically religious traditions must be allowed to manifest their identity publicly, free from any pressure to hide or disguise it”.

Make no mistake about it: this Pope is deeply worried about the Islamisation of Europe, and the West’s supine attitude towards the persecution of Christianity by its Muslim allies. In July, his closest aide, Mgr Georg Gänswein, said that “attempts to Islamise the West cannot be denied” and, indeed, were being helped by naive respectfulness.

Eindelijk !

Karel or Charles (we were still under French domination) Timmermans was born in Meerbeke where he died almost 71 years later on February 17 1883. He married twice. His second wife was Maria Anna Van den Houte, born in Lieferinge in 1825. I haven't yet looked up her death certificate or all their children.

Josephus Timmermans (Meerbeke 1858 - 1829) was a son of that second marriage and my great-grandfather. See also "My great-grandparents".

Josina De Doncker died in Pamel, where she had been born on May 30 1727. She had a natural son Judocus (Pamel 1755 - 1835) whose daughter Anna Catharina (Pame 1791 - Okegem 1865) married Adrianus Neukermans, a small farmer (Okegem 1786 - 1860) who just escaped service in Napoleon's armies because his father was over 71.
They were the parents of short-lived Amandus Neukermans (Okegem 1821 - 1857), my great-great-grandfather and father of Hermilianus (Okegem 1855 - 1932), see "De kloefkapper".

Sitemeter - again

I'm thinking about deleting the sitemeter from my website. The data supplied are unreliable ; according to that software I have lived almost everywhere in Flanders except in the place where I really live. Now I start getting invitations to porno sites by clicking on very innocent looking blog addresses - and these invitations are specifically labeled for the spot where the sitemeter reports I am living. So, I get b*y information which, I suppose, the sitemeter people sell for good money ...

Ah well ... as an ex economist I know nothing comes for free in this world, not even unreliable information.

Trouwen in Zweden

Doesn't look that way ...

Varia ?

Maar : "que sera, sera ; whatever will be will be ; the future's not ours to see ..." en mijn tijd is niet zo lang meer.

But can it be right when one no longer feels entirely at home in one's own city ? That probably is my own problem, not the city's.

France ...

I have participated in a splendid - and sometimes spectacular - ten day coach trip through God's own country, and my favorite one : France. The objective was double : a pilgrimage and tourism. The weather was nice to excellent.

Except for generous helpings of wine, we enjoyed a dry spell, ahum.

We started with a city tour of Paris. I have been in Paris on many occasions, but this trip has shown me more of the sights than on most of my previous trips combined (business trips, you know : go everywhere, see nothing). In the afternoon we visited the gardens of the castle at Fontainebleau, a splendid village hidden deep in its forest, and ended the day in Nevers where we saw the shrine of Ste Bernadette and enjoyed a stroll through the enchanting old city.

The next day, we missed the Puy de Dôme, no longer accessible for private coaches from July to September, and visited the magnificent basilica at Orcival, a miniscule village in the Mont Doré region. Through the impressive volcanic landscapes of the Massif Central we traveled to Le Puy-en-Velay, a splendidly located city with its famous volcanic pinnacles crowned with a giant statue of the Virgin and various chapels. Through the Cevennes (over the desolate Causses to ravishing Ste Enemie located on the Gorges du Tarn ; to Florac, then over la Corniche to Anduze) we traveled to Nîmes for a nightly stroll and a visit to the Roman arena and the Maison Carrée. That day we were reminded of the fierce and bitter struggles and slaughter - la guerre des camisards - between protestants and catholics in that region, which to this day remains at least partially staunchly protestant.

The next day we saw Narbonne Plage, lunched in the beautiful (but fake because over-restored)medieval Carcassonne tourist trap (where we had a cassoulet, what else) and arrived in Lourdes, a place where heaven touches earth. I am a regular visitor to that enchanted spot and I see more and more people going there, either for religious reasons, or out of sheer curiosity. Once again there were thousands and thousands of pilgrims, especially for the daily processions.

During our stay in Lourdes, we made a splendid trip over the Col d'Aspin to the relatively unknown and spectacular region of the mountain lakes around Cap du Long, where the level of the lakes has drastically fallen over the last years. We had a moment of panic : we thought that our lunch had gone bad : the sandwich packages were swollen and some of the packed salads had exploded creating a mess in the lunch bags - but we had forgotten that we had climbed over two thousand meters in a couple of hours, hence the effect of lower air pressure on the sealed packages ... Our driver was a real artist : I wouldn't even think of driving my car over those hellishly difficult, very steep and narrow mountain roads, he did it at the wheel of a big tourist coach, with the occasional flock of sheep barring the passage.

We had the privilege of an early morning mass at the Lourdes grotto, and then made our way to Auch, where we saw the famous choir stalls in the cathedral. Trafic excepted, Auch still looks like the typical delapidated French city of 40 - 50 years ago.
On the road from Auch to Moissac we traveled through some of the most enchanting, gently undulating landscapes I have ever seen. Bucolic France at its very best. That night we stayed at Sarlat-la-Canéda where we visited the authentical medieval city center, which was crowded with people in a festive mood and illuminated by thousands of small candles, a fairy tale experience. By early morning, the thousands upon thousands of small candles had disappeared. A nice manifestation of the new France with its exemplary efficiency and cleanliness. The ony thing they still have to work on are dog drools in the streets ...

The next day we traveled to Oradour-sur-Glane, the second, but terrible, highlight of the trip. After that visit, a terrible reminder of what we are capable of, the atmosphere in the coach changed perceptibly. That evening we stayed at Loches, the city of beautiful Agnes Sorel, and featuring of the many royal residences of the Loire region. It has some beautiful vestiges of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance but cannot compare with Sarlat, which is pure Middle Ages - Renaissance. We had the last Mass of our trip in the parc of our hotel with a panoramic view of the city and its surroundings.

The last day we visited the castle and gardens of Chenonceaux, and, over the enormous plains of Ile de France, where the wheat had already been harvested , rejoined Orleans for lunch. Courtesy of the French gendarmerie, we had a 45 minutes delay close to Paris but avoided the périphérique by a big but faster loop to the south and east of Paris. Once again our driver demonstrated his intimate knowledge of this spaghetti of freeways around Paris. Halfway between Paris and the border, the rain started, but we could not have cared less.

Once more, I have been seduced and enchanted by the ever changing scenery of God's own country, most beautiful France. A magnificent journey, courtesy of KWB and KAV and its volunteers.

Oradour

Oradour n'a plus de femmes
Oradour n'a plus un homme
Oradour n'a plus de feuilles
Oradour n'a plus de pierres
Oradour n'a plus d'église
Oradour n'a plus d'enfants

Plus de fumée plus de rires
Plus de toits plus de greniers
Plus de meules plus d'amour
Plus de vin plus de chansons.

Oradour, j'ai peur d'entendre
Oradour, je n'ose pas
Approcher de tes blessures
De ton sang de tes ruines,
je ne peux je ne peux pas
Voir ni entendre ton nom.

Oradour je crie et hurle
Chaque fois qu'un cœur éclate
Sous les coups des assassins
Une tête épouvantée
Deux yeux larges deux yeux rouges
Deux yeux graves deux yeux grands
Comme la nuit la folie
Deux yeux de petits enfants:
Ils ne me quitteront pas.

Oradour je n'ose plus
Lire ou prononcer ton nom.

Oradour honte des hommes
Oradour honte éternelle
Nos cœurs ne s'apaiseront
Que par la pire vengeance
Haine et honte pour toujours.

Oradour n'a plus de forme
Oradour, femmes ni hommes
Oradour n'a plus d'enfants
Oradour n'a plus de feuilles
Oradour n'a plus d'église
Plus de fumées plus de filles
Plus de soirs ni de matins
Plus de pleurs ni de chansons.

Oradour n'est plus qu'un cri
Et c'est bien la pire offense
Au village qui vivait
Et c'est bien la pire honte
Que de n'être plus qu'un cri,
Nom de la haine des hommes
Nom de la honte des hommes
Le nom de notre vengeance
Qu'à travers toutes nos terres
On écoute en frissonnant,
Une bouche sans personne,
Qui hurle pour tous les temps.

Poem by Jean Tardieu.

French fries - friet

The end of Belgium is near.

While the traditional "frietkotten" disappear from our streets and squares - they were the traditional final stop of every serious drinking binge - Vers l'Avenir announces that a Belgian chips (French fries) automaton is on the way.
In a few weeks time it will be possible to get the famous potato snack from a machine that works on the same principle as a soft drinks machine. The machine will offer the options salted or unsalted, and with or without mayonnaise.

But what about the options tasteful or tasteless ? Tasteless only I suppose ? And what about the charm of a double tongued b*y conversation with the stallkeeper ? Our culture is fast disappearing indeed ...

Oradour-sur-Glane

Last Sunday I visited the ruins of Oradour-sur-Glane, near Limoges France, where the SS murdered the whole population on June 10 1944, four days after the landings in Normandy.

The village has never been rebuilt and the ruins remain as a stark and extremely moving reminder of the bestiality of mankind. 644 people, of which more than 200 childeren, were murdered in cold blood and the village was burned to the ground.

Words cannot describe the emotional impact this visit had on me - the sight of the ruins and the mass grave moved me to tears. I knew the story, but visiting the spot, 63 years after the terrible events, still evoked very powerfull emotions. Over two hundred childeren butchered, the youngest barely a couple of days old ...

In a first reaction I thought that such an act continues to cry for revenge on the Nazis (there still are lots of them around, believe me - I met some of them !) especially because the monsters guilty of this crime have never been adequately punished.

But then, under the pure blue sky of Oradour, I had to remind myself that the Nazis were not the only ones to commit such bestialities - although no beast is capable of such crime !

Smaller and bigger Oradours have happened since and continue to happen : think about Srebrenica, Sabra and Shatila, Iraq, Palestine, Somalia and so many, many other places. And let us not forget September 11 2001, which I also remembered during my tour of France.

Shall we ever learn ?

September 8 1735

Catharina Van de Perre was born in Okegem where she passed away on September 12 1812.
In 1768 she married Petrus De Schepper, born in Okegem on September 5 1736 and who died there on January 24 1805. They had four children, two of which died very young.

Their youngest child was Alexandrina De Schepper (Okegem 1775 - 1853), the mother of Alexandrina Van der Speeten (Okegem 1795 -1831). Alexandrina Van der Speeten was the mother of Catharina Asselman (Okegem 1823 - 1892), the mother of my great-grandfather Hermilianus Neukermans (Okegem 1855 - 1932) - see "De kloefkapper" and various previous posts.

Apparently my attention span is not always what it should be - I omitted to post an article concerning the birth of Petrus De Schepper on September 5 1736 !

Another contrarian

Of zoals onze oosterburen soms zeggen : "Kurieren am Symptom".
