Road taxes

"The Netherlands pledged late on Friday to scrap all road and vehicle taxes and replace them with charges based on the distance driven.

It is the first sizeable economy to pursue such a scheme, which may become a model for other countries."

The transport minister predicted that the system – to be introduced by 2012 – would cut the total kilometres driven in the country by 15 per cent and CO2 emissions by 10 per cent.

A good reason to stay away from that part of the world come 2012. Unforunately, we may expect something comparable over here.
