For the first time in U.S. history, more than one in every 100 adults are in jail or prison, according to a new report documenting America's rank as the world's No. 1 incarcerator.

2,32 million Americans are behind bars, most of any nation.

Slecht nieuws

Het regent slecht nieuws.

Uit de website van De Morgen vandaag :

- de inflatie versnelt richting 4 procent en ligt inmiddels hoger dan wat bijna alle spaarboekjes aan rente opbrengen ;

- de Europese eenheidsmunt, de euro, blijft de records tegenover de dollar aaneenrijgen. Vanochtend was een euro 1,5239 dollar waard, een nieuw record sinds de lancering van de euro in 1999 ;

Respect

I read in my paper that a flemish politician - not exactly my favorite one, as if I had any favorite politicians - "demands" (eist) respect.

All people deserve respect - we all are humans after all (observe the s in humans). Whether their individual or collective opinions deserve respect is another matter altogether.

And my experience tells me that people really worthy of respect generally get it without asking for it.

Zieke Belgen

Verdraagzaamheid ...

... toch "a one way street" ?

Amost every day, we get additional proof that religious tolerance is a totally foreign idea in muslim countries.

Maria Elisabeth Van Lierde was born, the fifth of eleven children of miller Joannes Josephus Van Lierde (Pamel 1746 - 1811) and farmer's daughter from hof the Berchem Maria Josina Covens (Pamel 1759 - 1827).

Maria Elisabeth married Joannes Franciscus De Vidts (Pamel 1784 - 1839) with whom she had eight children. They were innkeepers (herbergier) in the Brusselstraat in a place which later became the new village center. Maria Elisabeth died on April 27 1838.

Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1811 - 1881) was their second son and my ancestor.

I have written about these persons on various occasions, including "February 12 1658", "January 24 1839", "July 3 1737" a.s.o.

Obama's face

"Don't Eat that Spud, Ma!"

That's how it all started as 17 year old Earl Jr. looked down at his mother's plate at the "Eat 'til You Can't No More" Diner.

What he saw surprised him and he shouted out to his mother. "There's a dude on your 'tater."

So when Jamie Lynn Dixon looked down at the potato she noticed that staring back at her was the visage of a man. And not just any man.

"Is it Jesus?" Earl Sr. asked.

"No," replied his son. "Better. It's Obama."

"Right off, three of the waitresses up and fainted at the mere mention of Obama's name.

The Dixon family brought the potato home with them. Within hours the miraculous potato had inspired a line twice around the Dixon's double wide trailer.

"And this isn't just some regular potato", swears Jamie Lynn. "No matter where I go in the room Barack's staring at me," she said. "This is one very special potato."

In fact, many of the neighbors said the Potatobama cured Fred Parker's rheumatism, as well as cured all the effects of Earl Jr.'s paint-sniffing debacle last week.

Jamie Lynn says she dreamed last night of Obama speaking to her. In her dream she said Obama simply keeps repeating the word "change" to her.

"I ask him what it means and he just keeps on saying that word over and over again," she said. "Earl Sr. thinks he might be talking about my menopause but I think it's more spiritual than that."

But the next morning she turned on the television and saw Obama saying "change" over and over in an interview no matter what the question was. "That's got to be a sign," said Jamie Lynn. "For that man to put his face on my dinner means that he must have some kind of secret spirit power," she said."

Some people are saying Obama might be the Second Coming. I don't know. Maybe it's just the first coming of Obama," said Earl Sr.

None of the Dixons' have voted in any of the past eight elections but promise that this time they'll vote for Obama.

They're also considering selling the Potatobama on Ebay.

This is no reason to start a party.

In my book, it is another sign that the crisis of the financial system is far from over. This may not be the beginning of the end, but merely the end of the beginning ...

It is more than I can understand to hear many among the most reputed economists say that the basis of the US economy is, and remains, structurally sound.

If they had had to pass their exam with the professors who thaught me the noble art, they never would have made it.

Times change, for the better ... I hope.

February 2 1806

Cornelius Van der Speeten died in Okegem, where he had been born on June 12 1772. A short life span, but not unusually short in those times. He was an agricultural hand (landbouwer, werkman) and lived in the Fonteinstraat. He was the first husband of Alexandrina De Schepper Okegem 1775 - 1853). They married in 1795, and at the beginning of their marriage they lived with Alexandrina's parents.

They had six children of which Alexandrina Van der Speeten was the eldest (Okegem 1795 - 1835). Like her father and unlike her mother she died young. Her mother had another three children with her second husband (see the post : "February 17 1786").

Cornelius and Alexandrina were the great-grandparents of one of my maternal great-grandparent, Hermilianus Neukermans (Okegem 1855 - 1932).

Ages ago I met ...

Earlier this month I forgot to mention the birthday of a person who has been (still is) very important to me. Belatedly I wish that person, her family and her friends (sadly enough I never was one of them) a happy birthday and many happy returns.

Knowingly or unknowingly, that person helped me to avoid making what might have been the most stupid decision and/or the biggest mistake in my life.

Stervensbegeleiding

And I like this too

One day after the chairman of the Société Générale (who ? me ???) said that his resignation is out of the question, a vivid reaction came from a rather unexpected source : the president of the French Republic.

"I just don't understand the Societe Generale situation. When the chairman of a company experiences a disaster of this magnitude and he does not assume the consequences of this, that is not normal," Sarkozy was quoted as saying in an interview with Le Parisien.

"For someone to make 7 million euros a year does not shock me. But on one condition, that he assumes his responsibilities. That's what the problem is with Daniel Bouton," added Sarkozy.

"I've got nothing against him. But you can't say 'I'm going to be paid 7 million euros a year' and then, when there's a problem, say 'It's not me.' That, I cannot accept."

See : http://sg.news.yahoo.com/rtrs/20080226/tbs-business-socgen-sarkozy-dc-7318940.html.

I never expected the French president to react in this way : he indeed is a "bigger" man than I thought. Maybe it was not smart for him to say this, but it happens to be the pure, unadulterated truth ! Bravo, Mr Sarkozy !!

I like it ...

oh, I like it !

Toxisch

America and religion

A study of the American religious landscape was released yesterday by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life. The study is said to be the most comprehensive such examination of the country in at least a half century. It finds that the United States is in the midst of a period of unprecedented religious fluidity, in which 44 percent of American adults have left the denomination of their childhood for another denomination, another faith, or no faith at all.

"Americans are not only changing jobs, changing locations, changing spouses, but they're also changing religions on a regular basis," said a director of the Pew Forum. "We have nearly half the American public telling us they're something different today than they were as a child, and that's a staggering number. It's such a dynamic religious marketplace and very competitive."
That ugly word again.

*

"The United States, founded by dissident Protestants seeking religious freedom, is on the verge of becoming a nation in which Protestants are a minority. A growing fraction of Americans identify themselves as unaffiliated with any religious tradition, and a small but increasingly significant number say they are Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, or Orthodox Christian. And a flood of overwhelmingly Catholic immigrants, mostly from Latin America, is helping to offset a high dropout rate among US-born Catholics".

Intercontinental travel - no

And then there are two projects which I have cherished for over 40 years now and which will never come to fruition.

The first one was to drive up all the way from San Diego in Southern California to Fairbanks or Anchorage in Alaska - in those days the Alaskan Highway was still a real adventure which had to be planned really carefully - and steam back to San Diego on a cruise ship. A two to three month trip I think. I'll never do it because this is not a trip one makes alone, and interested friends with sufficient time and a little money on their hands are few and far between.

The second one was the exploration of the US - to travel across America for as long as it took to know the country a little bit better : West, South, Center, East and North. This might take a couple of years, or three, four long trips. It will never come to pass either for the same reasons as the first one, with an additional one : my raging agophobia which gets worse with age : I can't stand wide open spaces, they make me physically sick (just like claustrophobia or fear of heights makes other people sick). It is stupid, and one can tell oneself it is something between ones ears, it just doen't help. Even looking at a cowboy film playing in the wide open spaces of the West makes me quirky (I'm thinking about Hondo which I saw on the BBC yesterday).

Can't be helped !

Intercontinental travel - yes

I retired at the end of 2000. I entered the new millenium a free man. I did a lot of professional travel over the last 15 years of my career, mostly to North America, but I cut down significantly on my travel from 1998 to my retirement. My ailing mother lived with me - I didn't really want to travel too much and my younger colleagues wanted to go in my place, so every one was happy. Unfortunately, my sainted mother passed way three months befor my retirement.

Up to 2004, I felt good just enjoying my freedom of the professional yoke, although a good yoke it was ! Lazyness reigned !

Since then I started travelling to Italy and France a couple of times every year, with France remaining my clear favorite. I love the French people and have problems ajusting to the Italian theatral manners, and often clear rudeness to foreigners. Probably they sometimes think the Rioman Empire is still in existence ...

Now it is time to list the intercontinental travels that I would like to undertake "before it is too late" - I mean before I am too old or before traveling becomes politically incorrect.

A rather expensive group trip to Western Canada is planned for this summer, including Vancouver, Victoria Island with Nanaimo ; Whistler, Kamloomps, Clearwater, Wells Gray Park, Valemount. Jasper National Park is included, as are Banff and Canmore. Various other National Parks are to be visited (Glacier, Revelstoke) as is the Okanagan valley and Harrison Hot Springs ... A dream trip, I couldn't have it planned better myself - right trhough southern British Columbia and a piece of Alberta, with most of the famous sights the Canadian Rockies have to offer.

Another trip would be to California, North and South - maybe next year, under a new president. (I swore to myself never to visit the States again under the Bush Regime. The next may even be worse but I haven't been to San Francisco for 10 - 12 years, and to the Los Angeles area for even longer).

I look forward to see more of the Pacific Coast (Monterrey, Carmel, Santa Barbara, maybe San Diego), Death Man valley, and the San Francisco Bay Area with Sausalito, Inverness and the wine country of Sonoma and Napa valleys, and I'd want to have a peek at Northern California (Mount Shasta). All this probably is a month's work or longer, and a very individual trip. The last time I made a month long trip in California was in 1992. I never rented a car, did everything by plane, train and bus and my watch remained on Begian time and that caused no problems whatsoever. A very nice and sweet memory indeed.

Another trip I would like to make is down Mexico way : the heartland of Mexico, then Guadalajara, Acapulco maybe, and - maybe - the deserts of Baja California, Durango, Chihuahua or Coahuila. Yucatan doesn't really attract me that much.

I have good friends in each of these three countries.

Shorter trips (timewise that is might be the Puget Sound area with Seattle, Tacoma and the Olympic peninsula, and of course the Big Apple, New York. New York, the cultural capital of the world. London and Paris, eat your hearts out ! How I have missed going to New York now and again. A city to my heart, a contrarian city !

Liars

When I get "launched", it is difficult to stop me.

I do not think that hot air containers, like many (green) politicians and activists, mr Gore included, will change anything. Saving energy and reducing our ecological footprint won't either.

These merely punctual measures are, as we say in Flemish, nothing more than small drops of water on a scorchingly hot plate. Kurieren am Sympton as our neighbors say.

Those who prophecy that this tinkering in the margin will solve the problem are either stupid, or outright liars.

The problem is so gigantic and immense that solving it will require a total change of our lifestyles.

Even that will not be sufficient : the solution will require a total change of our socio-economic system because our profit oriented society based on growth and greed most probably will not generate viable long term solutions.

I do not see that happening anytime soon ... and I most certainly wouldn't know how to go about it either. Once again, defining the problem is so much easier than finding the solution.
Any valid ideas out there ?

Pottering around

Spring is in the air.

I've been pottering around in my garden, cleaning things up a little bit. I'm no specialist but I think nature is at least one month ahead of schedule.

Something definitely is happening to our climate. Whether we are to blame or not, I don't know. Probably yes. I'm not going to start ruminating about forcing people into a certain lifestyle, to discover a couple of decades later that the lifestyle is completely wrong, morally unjust (see the North-South gap), totally unsustainable and life-threatening in the short or in the longer term.

Indeed, greed once more. A dollar is more palpable than pure fresh air.

Catastrophies - like Yellowstone blowing up - excepted, I stand a good chance of living out my life span without experiencing really major changes in our natural environment. Once in a lifetime is enough : I already lived through one in the fifties and the sixties - it was called progress and growth - totally new and even alien ideas before the second world war, now turned into lesser gods - and now we start paying the price.

But I most certainly wouldn't like being a child or a young adult right now. Up to the early nineties our main nightmare was about nuclear war (still a distinct possiblity, don't you let them tell you otherwise), now it is cataclysmic changes in our natural environment.

Not very nice thoughts for a nice sunny day in late winter - early spring ...

Is it too late ? I sincerely hope not, but I wouldn't like to bet on it.

Cuba

Seen on the website of the Financial Times :

“There is no freedom of speech, of religion or of assembly in Cuba. There is no independent judiciary nor right to a fair trial. Why does this vile, repressive regime survive?”.

The question is asked by prof. William Buiter on his blog http://blogs.ft.com/maverecon/.

Right he is, but why is this type of question more often than not asked about Cuba and not about Saudi Arabia and so many other "allies" of the West ?

Could the answer be a three letter word, like oil ?

The Russians may be coming

The chairman of an important European group admits that it is almost impossible to keep the evolution of the group's shareholders in focus. He said he wouldn't necessarily know if and when the Russian mafia were building a stake in his group.

Why do I have a nagging feeling that the question about the coming of the Russian mafia is not entirely relevant ?

Deus ex machina ?

Belgian newspaper websites announce that last night full agreement was reached on the coming reform of the Belgian federal state. Not a minute too early.

What about the contents ? I really don't care : the reform that will be put in place will be different from the present agreement anyway. What counts is that the stupid, but dangerous extremists on both side just might be stopped in their tracks for the time being.

Just let's hope that in a couple of hours, or in a few days, the announced agreement doesn't fall away in tatters again as it has happened so often in the last half year. Anyway, up to now, they never announced a "full agreement".

And isn't it remarkable that the agreement could be reached at a time when the main negotiator was in hospital, and had been for some time ?

Ralph Nader

The 74-year old "consumer activist" decided to run for president as an independent. This is his third shot at the presidency.

I can't stand the prick, never could, from the early sixties on. Without his ill fated candidature in 2000, Dubya never might have made it to the presidency.

That being said, he has an excellent reason to run : he said that neither the Democrats nor the Republicans were addressing problems facing Americans. He called Washington "corporate occupied territory" that turns the government against the interests of the people.

He might very well be right there!

See : http://www.reuters.com/article/vcCandidateFeed1/idUSN24503020080224.

But, as I know, and as Nader knows - he is not stupid - seeing and listing the problems is easy. Solving them is an entirely different kettle of fish.

YouTube

Houston, we have a problem !

I seem to have lost (temporary ?) contact with YouTube since early evening, so the videos which I embedded in my blog do not work- at least not for the time being.

Maybe something went wrong with my equipment, and y'all still enjoy the videos out there.

But maybe this is a temporary defect or an overload of a YouTube server, so I'll wait and see and have patience.

- dit is de oudste vermelding van de naam Neukermans die ik tot nu toe gevonden heb ;

Zie : http://www.tijd.be/artikel/Gouden_aandeel_in_Suez_GdF_nog_ver_af.6340479.

***
What is the use of a golden share ? Window dressing, mainly : the corporation wins at almost every turn. The state - theoretically the defensor of public interest - looks on, powerless.

Interested ?

For those of my foreign readers who might be interested in what is happening in Belgium and how close we are to solving the budget and constitutional crises, nothing is happening.

One day the actors and media blow hot (or rather luke warm), the next day they blow cold. With less than a month to go for the present government, nothing has really changed. Stubborness, greed and stupidity continue to reign.

A deus ex machina would be sincerely appreciated, and ... in Belgium, nothing is impossible after all. But I sincerely wonder how those guys can sleep at night. Maybe they are asleep all day long ?

Development aid ?

Just days after the Moroccan authorities claimed to have found the murderer in six murders committed in Belgium between 1986 and 1989, the Dutch justice now appears to have solved another double murder committed in Antwerp, Belgium in 1993

Is this a new kind of development aid or something ?

Energiemarkt

For the remainder of the line, see the post for "February 3 1664".

February 19 1803

Nicolaus Sterckx, who lived a long life, died in Pamel where he had been born on August 22 1714. He was married to Catharina Suzanna Van Tricht (Pamel 1725 - 1799).

They had five children : the eldest was Elisabeth Sterckx (Pamel 1754 - Okegem 1799). In 1778 she became the first wife of Josephus called Judocus Neukermans (Okegem 1736 - 1814) with whom she had seven children. After her death, Josephus married Maria Carolina Appelmans (Gooik ca 1769 - Okegem 1819) with whom he had another three children.

It is interesting to note that Josephus was almost 42 years old when he married for the first time, and almost 64 when he married for the second time ... He himself was the tenth of twelve children.

Adrianus Neukermans (Okegem 1788 - 1860) was the fifth child of Josephus and Elisabeth. He married Anna Catharina De Doncker (Pamel 1791 - Okegem 1860). Amandus was the fourth of their six children, and the father of my great-grandfather Hermilianus Neukermans (Okegem 1855 - 1932).

February 18 1658

Maria Vernaillen died in Okegem. She was the first spouse of Engelbert Van den Waterloop who died in Okegem in 1670.

I already reported on that couple. See the post for "January 24 1670".

Vloeken ontkerkelijkt

Another aspect of American imperialism : we now even curse in English.

September 18 1885

February 17 1883

My great-great-grandfather Charles (Karel) Timmermans died in Meerbeke where he had been born on September 9 1812.

He married twice : in 1839, he married Henrica Maximiliana D'Hauwer, who died in Ninove in 1854 ; in 1857, he married my great-great-grandmother Maria Anna Van den Haute, who was born in Lieferinge in 1825.

I still have to research additional data as well as the children from Karel's two marriages.

See also : "September 13 1812".

February 17 1786

Petrus Van der Speeten died in Okegem where he was buried two days later. He was born in Okegem on January 1 1733 and married Joanna De Mol (Okegem 1733 - 1791) in 1757.

The had nine children. Cornelius Van der Speeten (Okegem 1772 - 1806) was number eight. In 1795 he married Alexandrina De Schepper (Okegem 1775 - 1853). They had six children. After his death, Alexandrina married Petrus Judocus Neukermans in 1807. With him, she had an additional three children.

Alexandrina Van der Speeten (Okegem 1795 - 1831) was the eldest of six children of Cornelius and Alexandrina. We just met her in the previous post "February 15 1785".

The Petrus Judocus Neukermans she married was a member of the second (probably related) branch of the Neukermans family in Okegem. Both branches appeared in Okegem in the years after the census of 1693.

February 15 1875

Andreas Asselman died in Okegem where he had been born on March 5 1795. In 1818, he married Alexandrina Van der Speeten (Okegem 1795 - 1831). They had five children. After Alexandrina's death, Andreas remarried Elisabeth Van der Kelen (Pamel 1796 - Okegem 1864).

Catharina Asselman (Okegem 1823 - 1892) was the third child of Andreas and Alexandrina. In 1849, she married Amandus Neukermans (Okegem 1824 - 1857).

Catharina and Amandus were my great-great-grandparents : I have written about them in previous posts.

Recht in de roos

Filip Maenhout, Broederlijk Delen-coöperant in Kameroen :

February 15 1625

Maria Van der Kelen was born in Pamel, a daughter of Cornelius Van der Kelen (born in Pamel ca 1598 - died before 1653), a meisenier, and Anna De Moor, who died in Pamel in 1676.

Anna was the second spouse of Cornelius, and she remarried after his death.

In 1650, Maria married Judocus De Vidts (Pamel 1627 - 1694). They had ten children, of which Petrus De Vidts (Pamel 1655 - 1726) was the fourth.

We are in known territory already : see the post "October 7 1676".

There is some doubt about Maria's father - some sources state that his name was Martinus Van der Kelen.

February 14 1771

Petronella Van Eeckhoudt was born in Pamel. Her parents were Augustinus Van Eeckhoudt (Pamel 1727 - 1775) and Joanna Maria Janssens (Pamel 1729 -1790).

Around 1805 Petronella married Michael Van der Sleyen (Pamel 1758 -1827). They had six children of which Maria Elisabeth Van der Sleyen (Pamel 1811 - 1860) was the youngest.

We just mentioned her a few posts ago : see "February 12 1658".

Bertje in Congo

What's in a name ?

Humo

A victim of war

Bernardus Karolus Neukermans was born in Okegem on February 16 1883, the eldest child and son of Hermilianus Neukermans and Clementia Broeckaert.

He was a soldier in the so-called "great war" and a late victim of its butchery. He died a a painful death in Okegem on August 13 1921, a late victim to chemical warfare. He was the eldest brother of my maternal grandfather Joannes Franciscus Neukermans (Okegem 1886 - 1961).
.
Another brother Joannes (Wentj) Amadeus Neukermans became a war volunteer and lived to almost 81 - he was born on the very last day of 1895 and died October 31 1976.

Premature death

From the website of Rik Van Hauwe, http://www.rikvanhauwe.be/overlijdens.1786.htm.

Fourty-one deaths were registered in the village of Denderwindeke in 1786 : 19 adults and 22 children. Maybe an exceptionally bad year, but not an uncommon aspect of our population history.

I already indicated that the situation did not really get any better before the 20th century - see the post "Kindersterfte vroeger".

February 14 1729

Catharina Theresia was born in Pamel, the third child of Maximiliaan Van Cauwelaert (born in Onze Lieve Vrouw Lombeek and who died in Pamel 1741) and Elisabeth Van Overstraeten (Sint Katharina Lombeek 1692 - Pamel 1741).

Catharina Theresia had two children with her first husband Judocus De Vidts (Pamel 1703 - 1750) and - if my sources are correct - thirteen with her second husband Joannes Josephus Kestens (Pamel 1719 - 1778).

Catharina Theresia and her first husband were meiseniers. Catharina died in Pamel on November 29 1805.

I descend from their eldest son Petrus Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1749 - 1793).
See the post : " November 29 1805".

February 12 1658

Maria (Maayken) Appelmans (born ca 1590) died on that day. Around 1617 she married Jacobus De Vidts (Pamel ca 1590 - 1679). They had five or six children.

They are not in the direct line of De Vidts leading to my maternal grandmother Maria Antonia De Vidts (Pamel 1885 - 1949).

Their son Petrus (Pamel ca 1618 - 1668) married Josina Van Nieuwenhove (born in Aspelare or in Appelterre - died in Pamel in 1668). I have described bits and pieces of this line before, but I shall repeat it here.

Petrus De Vidts and Josina had a son Joannes (Pamel 1651 - 1724) who married Maria De Vleminck, who died in Pamel in 1716.

Joannes and Maria had a daughter Joanna Maria De Vidts (Pamel 1683 - 1726) who married Joannes Baveghems (Pamel 1681 - 1737).

Joanna Maria and Joannes had a daughter Elisabeth Baveghems (Pamel 1723 - 1807) and her first husband was Martinus Gerardus Van Lierde, born in Idegem before 1723 and who died in Pamel in 1754.

Their son Joannes Josephus Van Lierde (Pamel 1746 - 1811) married Maria Josina Covens (Pamel 1759 - 1827). They had a daughter Maria Elisabeth Van Lierde (Pamel 1790 - 1838) who married Joannes Franciscus De Vidts (Pamel 1784 - 1835). Now we rejoin the direct De Vidts line to my grandmother on my mother's side.

Their son Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1811 - 1881) married Maria Elisabeth Van der Sleyen (Pamel 1811 - 1860).

Through their daughter Antonia, born in Pamel in 1840, they were ancestors of my father's mother (Antonia was one of my great-grandmothers) ; their son Felix (Pamel 1853 - 1940) was one of my maternal great-grandfathers. The links through Antonia and Felix have been described a couple of times before.

February 10 1942

Blondina Muylaert, the last surviving of my great-grandparents, died in the Koestraat in Pamel, 93 years old. She was born in Denderhoutem on June 4 1849 and married Felix De Vidts (Pamel 1853 - 1940). They had five children : two died at a tender young age. Their son Petrus Joannes died in 1922, 29 years old. My maternal grandmother Maria Antonia De Vidts (Pamel 1885 - Okegem 1949) and her sister Line were the only ones to build a family. Blondine died in her house, which was taken over by her daughter Line.

According to my mother she was almost bowed double with age. She is the only of my great-grandparents for which I have no picture. She must have been somewhat of an original : she systematically refused to be photographed - this may well have been related to her devotions. She never ate fish because fish had eaten the dead bodies of so many people who had drowned in the sea. I heard other stories, but I can't vouch for them ...

Pee

From "Random thoughts of a random man" (http://rndman.blogspot.com/ ) :

"A friend from America sent me this one - California vintners in the Napa Valley area, who primarily produce Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio wines have developed a new hybrid grape that acts as an anti-diuretic. It is expected to reduce the number of trips older people have to make to the bathroom during the night. The new wine will be marketed as...PINO MORE."

Not my motto

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool
than to speak out and remove all doubt
**
But Abraham Lincoln - unlike some of his successors - was a wise man indeed.

Terrorism ???

Another type of terrorism is described in : http://www.counterpunch.org/cockburn02162008.html.

I really don't know what to think about the article : on the one hand, my gut tells me that it is a caricature at the very least ; on the other side, I wouldn't dismiss is out of hand.

It really drives me moody ...

PC

Found on "Some have hats" (http://somehavehats.typepad.com/some_have_hats/) :

"I stumbled upon a definition of political correctness that was just too good to keep to myself. Pardon its lack of class, which I would argue is justified by its accuracy.

Political Correctness

A doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical liberal minority,
and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media,
which holds forth the proposition
that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Whoever came up with that has my undying admiration."

I spare you the very expressive cartoon which goes with the post.

Kosovo ...

... roept onafhankelijkheid uit. Daar komt gegarandeerd ambras van.

Kosovo independent : quite possibly a new catastrophy in the making. The Balkan remains the powder keg of Europe.

Lourdes again

The sanctuaries of Lourdes placed a short video commemorating the events of February 10 and 11 2008 on the web. Frankly, it doen't do justice the the event, but here it goes anyway :

http://www.lourdes-france.org/index.php?goto_centre=ru&contexte=fr&id=164&id_rubrique=164.

February 11 2008 ...

... was the 150th anniversary of the first of eighteen apparitions of Our Lady to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858. In the middle of winter, sixty to seventy thousand pilgrims assembled in Lourdes, France to commemorate this day and to give thanks. I was one of them. An unforgettable, deeply moving experience - one of the highlights of my life.

Lourdes indeed is a place where heaven touches earth, a fountain of faith, hope and love, and one of my favorite destinations. And don't you dare to talk about mass hysteria. The fact that Lourdes exists and that popular interest continues to grow while churches empty is a small miracle in itself. Five to six million pilgrims visit Lourdes every year.

The video shows the end of the procession of light at the eve of the anniversary (on February 10 2008). I was there too, thank God.

February 14 1975

On February 14 1975 Pelham Grenville Wodehouse passed away at the venerable age of almost 94 years.

The creator of Jeeves, Bertie Wooster, Blandings Castle and other comic marvels, a very prolific writer, died in the USA. I possess almost 100 of his books.

See : http://www.pgwodehousesociety.org.uk/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P._G._Wodehouse.

No single author gave me more joy and pleasure than Plum. He may not have been the smartest of men (cfr his wartime bêtises which cost him very dearly) but he was a brilliant author, "the performing flea" of English litterature.

Mister Michel

Obama

De Standaard interrogated 35 members - left, right and center - of the Flemish parliament about their preferences for the US presidency. Six didn't know, the republicans got three votes and the democrats 26. Obama got 21 of those. Words like renewal and change were used a lot.

So our representatives not only do believe their own promises, they also believe other politicians who make these promises, as long as they are not their own competitors.

I myself am glad that I am not an American. I think the choice they have is poor to very poor. That being said, I most certainly would prefer Clinton over Obama.
*

The question was - of course - totally absurd and meaningless, but it filled two pages of the paper, thank you.

Our ex future

prime minister has been admitted to the emergency services of the KUL. Maybe, just maybe his illness is a sign that he has not been up to his task all the time. I wish him a speedy and full recovery.

The papers abound with positive comments and well wishing messages from his political colleagues, left, right, and middle. When one compares these declarations with the comments published since june 2007, a barrel full of politicians, journalists and so on have been hypocritical then or are hypocitical now.

I am so disgusted that I am not even capable of writing down some of the "better" exemples. You will have to read the papers yourselves.

Brrr...

Debat

Is religie gevaarlijke nonsens ?

Is religium opium for the people ? Is religion dangerous nonsense ? Hitchens has arrived. Who missed him anyway ?

Dikke truiendag

Musings

Just back from a peaceful and serene week in an environment without papers or TV...

So I started reading the newspapers which were waiting for me, and a couple of pages were enough to make me almost as mad as a hornet and sad as, yeah sad as what ?
Human stupidity is limitless, as is our greed.

Unfortunately, retiring in a backneck of the woods, without papers and TV, is not a viable option. I'll have to suffer my fate - ahum - I suppose, and continue to annoy people with my next to useless ruminations. Nobody is obliged to read them anyway ...

I'm back

After 6 days in my favorite spot in south-western France, I am very happy and quite tired. More about that later.

Bye for now

I'll probably be back late next week.

Obscurantisme

Exit Mitt

Once more, I am furious when I see the speed at which "America" is going down the drain.

According to my paper ex-presidential candidate and mormon (one letter too many ?) Mitt Romney said :

"Europe is facing a demographic disaster. That is the inevitable product of weakened faith in the Creator, failed families, disrespect for the sanctity of human life and eroded morality..."

Few people will deny that Europe faces significant demographic challenges. Some, including myself, might, just possibly, follow part of his reasoning. But the arrogance and the sanctimoniousness of the guy !! Once more, a perfect illustration of seeing the mote in one's brothers eye but not seeing the beam in one's own.

America : now a land where whitewashed graves abound and where faith has become a commodity ! God and the dollar, and darn your neighbor !

Sad, sooo sad ...

February 8 1639

Cornelia Walckiers died in Denderhoutem. In 1593 she had married Pieter Grijseels (who died in Denderhoutem 1639, less than four months after his wife).

Their daughter Petrina Grijseels was born in Denderhoutem in 1594 and married Petrus Guns (Denderhoutem 1595 - 1646).

Petrus and Petrina had a son, Petrus Guns, born in Denderhoutem in 1623. In 1647 he married Joanna Van Muylem (+ Denderhoutem 1689).

Maria Guns, born in 1660, was one of their children. I just mentioned her two posts ago. See : "February 7 1652".

February 7 1827

Michael Van der Sleyen died in Pamel, where he had been born on November 1 1748. He married Petronella Van Eeckhoudt (Pamel 1771 - 1828).

I have reported on this couple on previous occasions. The last time was in post : "January 30 1810".

February 7 1652

On that day Joannes Goossens was born in Denderhoutem. He died there 80 years later on October 24 1732. He married Maria Guns, born in Denderhoutem in 1660.

The last time we met this couple was in post "January 1 1595".

Sharia ?

The archbishop of Canterbury says the adoption of certain aspects of Sharia law in the UK "seems unavoidable".

Dr Rowan Williams said that the UK has to "face up to the fact" that some of its citizens do not relate to the British legal system. Dr Williams argues that adopting parts of Islamic Sharia law would help maintain social cohesion.

For example, Muslims could choose to have marital disputes or financial matters dealt with in a Sharia court. He says Muslims should not have to choose between "the stark alternatives of cultural loyalty or state loyalty".

See : http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7232661.stm.

I shall abstain from any comment because I couldn't possible remain polite if I were to enter into this matter.

7 februari 1813

February 7 1642

Adrianus Van de Perre, born in Haaltert, died in Okegem where he was buried one day later, on February 8 1642. In 1627 he had married Margaretha Cammaerts, who died in Okegem in 1604.

Their son Adrianus, who died in Okegem in 1693, married Christina Gansemans, who expired in Okegem in 1715.

Laurentius Van de Perre (Okegem 1673 - died after 1730), a son of Adrianus and Christina, married Catharina Van Geet, born in Iddergem, and who died in Okegem in 1727.

Laurentius and Catharina had a son Joannes (Okegem 1706 - 1762) who married Magdalena Paridaens (Pamel 1702 - 1785). We remembered her a couple of days ago.

I descend from two children of Joannes and Magdalena :

Catharina (Okegem 1735 - 1812)

Jacobus Antonius (Okegem 1740 - 1712).

See various posts : the latest ones include "February 6 1702" and "February 1 1627".

February 7 1628

On that day, Petrus Straetman died in Okegem. He had been married to Cornelia Booms, who preceeded him in death in 1621.

Petrus and Cornelia had six children. The third one was Adrianus, born in Okegem in 1604, who, in 1636, married Margaretha Van der Kelen, born in Pamel. She died in Okegem in 1670.

Adrianus and Margaretha had six children too. The youngest one was Niclaas Straetman. He died in Okegem in 1719. He was married to Catharina De Winne (Okegem 1661 - 1730).

Again, there were six children. I descend from the third child, Anna Straetman (Okegem 1691 - 1759) and from the fifth child Joanna Straetman (Okegem 1697 - 1762).

The line has been described in previous posts, including "January 17 1660".

Memento mori

Today is - a very early - Ash Wednesday.

It is good to remember that, believer or not, we all return to ashes.

The ashes of a multibillionaire and of a poor tramp are exactly the same.

Keeping that in mind might help us to be a little bit more human and understanding.

February 6 1702

Magdalena Paridaens was born in Pamel. I mentioned her a couple of days ago in "February 1 1627".

Blogging

This guy made a very efficient use of business cards during business meetings.

Lazy

I'm a little bit worried. Going through my recent posts, I see that, out of pure laziness, I have written most of them in Flemish.

I'll try to mend my ways and write again some more in my particular brand of English. But my English-speaking readers have not missed that much.

Barring a couple of exceptions, I have been moaning and ranting about local situations.

Integratie ?

February 3 1664

Arnoldus Mottemans (Arent) was born in Teralfene but died, in Impegem on that date. He married Barbara De Cuyper (+ Impegem 1666).

They had six children : Barbara Mottemans (+ Pamel 1668) was the fifth. With her husband, Georgius Jespers (+ Pamel 1681) - who remarried after her death - she had nine children.

Elisabeth Jespers (Pamel 1656 - 1719) was number six. In 1681, she married Petrus Stockmans (+ Pamel 1729), with whom she had six children.

The last of the six was Petronella Stockmans (Pamel 1698 - 1768) who married Joannes Janssens (Pamel ca 1700 - 1770) in 1723.

They had six children. The fourth was Joanna Maria Janssens (Pamel 1729 - 1790) who married her first husband, Augustinus Van Eeckhoudt (Pamel 1727 - 1775) in 1757. They had eight children, but we have been in known territory for some time now : see various posts, including "January 8 1652".

Kwaliteit

Zwart pessimisme, of realisme ?

... of zo iets.

France

Next week this time, my bag will be packed for another short trip to my second home country : France.

February 1 1627

Judocus Paridaens was born in Pamel. He was one of the seven children of Martinus Paridaens (+ Pamel 1667) and Catharina Cools.

Ca 1654, Judocus married Catharina Wijns (+ Pamel 1697). They had seven children too : their son Petrus Paridaens (Pamel 1655 - 1728) and his second wife Gerardina Clement (+ Pamel 1710) had a daughter Magdalena (Pamel 1702 - Okegem after 1785).

In 1728, Magdalena married Joannes Van de Perre (Okegem 1706 - 1762). They had 10 children.

I descend from two of them :

-- Catharina Van de Perre (Okegem 1735 - 1812), who married Petrus De Schepper (Okegem 1736 - 1805) ;

-- Jacobus Antonius (Okegem 1740 - 1812) and his much younger second wife Joanne Maria Wellekens (Okegem 1780 - 1839).

The rest of the lines has been explained in "September 15 1655", "September 8 1735" and various other posts.

February 1 1739

In hof te Berchem Henricus Covens, farmer (pachter) and alderman of Pamel, 78 years old, passed away. He was the forefather of all the Covens in the wider region. He married twice : in 1687, he married Anna Van den Heuvel, who passed away in 1698. Then he married Catharina Thienpont, born in Herfelingen, who died in 1729.

He was born in or near Malderen on June 7 1660. He was a meisenier and a man of some importance. He had four children with Anna and seven with Catharina.

Carolus (Pamel before 1698 - 1770), a meisenier like his father, was a son from Hendrik's first marriage. He took over the exploitation of hof te Berchem. In 1739, Carolus married Barbara Galmaert, born in Gooik in 1720.

We have reported on this couple in previous blogs, including the post on "November 25 1770".

Arbeit macht frei

Willem Elsschot

Mijn "all time" favoriete schrijver.

Moderne poëzie is mij even vreemd als Chinees.

So what ? Tweehonderd miljoen is twintig euro per Belg per jaar.

Zie : http://www.standaard.be/Artikel/Detail.aspx?artikelId=6S1NCBFH.

Moet er nog zand zijn ?

The EU has decided that European post services must be privatised. So we all know what is coming : higher prices and less services.
