Grumpy old men

I feel a lot grumpier than usual. So maybe I might be well advised to limit my comments till the skies clear out. Especially now that we have "free skies" which are not yet free skies at all.

American missionaries

As a result of the weakness of the dollar, American missionaries in Europe are in financial trouble.

See : http://www.rorate.com/nws.php?id=44656.

That's fine with me. Who needs them ?

US veterans

Here is a quote from the Veterans Administration:

"About one-third of the adult homeless population have served their country in the Armed Services. Current population estimates suggest that about 154,000 veterans (male and female) are homeless on any given night and perhaps twice as many experience homelessness at some point during the course of a year."

At least, that is what I read on http://locustofevil.blogspot.com/.

Terrible if it's true no ?

March 30 1678

Judocus Van Tricht died in Pamel. He had been born in Pamel on April 3 1627 in a well known line of farmers (pachters). He married Gerarda Lambeen (there are a lot of variations for her name) who was the daughter of an alderman in Burst, where she she was born in 1629.

They had five children I know of. The line has been described in "December 2 1641" and in other posts.

Vanavond ...

March 30 1638

On that day, Maria Van Muylem was born in Denderhoutem, a daughter to Egidius (who died in Denderhoutem in 1650) and to Clara Cobbaert (who died there in 1647).

In 1663 Maria married Egidius Meganck, who died in Denderhoutem in 1690 (I do not know where Egidius was born). As reported before they had six children. In 1692 Maria remarried a man with the nice name of David Mylief (my love, or a May love ...) and she passed away on December 22 1708.

Fot the continuation of the line see the post : "March 13 1690".

As I wrote before, it is not impossible that this line of Meganck's was related to the line in Aspelare - Nederhasselt from which I also descend. That is a question I haven't yet looked into.

March 30 1869

Franciscus Meganck, born in Nederhasselt ca 1798, died there on forementioned day. He was married to Regina Menschaert (Nederhasselt ca 1799 - 1859) where they lived in the village square (Plaats).

I haven't yet looked up their children except for Virginia Meganck (Nederhasselt 1834 - 1917), one of my great-great-grandmothers. See the post "March 22 1859".

Intriest

Film taken off web

I was not planning to react on this almost insignificant "fait divers" but between the author, "responsible" governments and other authorities, and part of the world, they have almost made it into a world state affair.

My pinch of salt - for what it's worth.

1. The author is a political parvenu, willing to do anything to come in the spotlights.
2. The reaction of the (Dutch) authorities has been very "dutch" - an exemple of Dutch courage that is. Ignoring the dude would have been an option, but not in super political correct Dutchovia. They have sown unrest and panic wherever they possibly could.
3. And then the teleguided reactions in "the islam world". How many of those vocal protesters might have seen the film, do you think ?

But there is one positive aspect : a very large majority of European muslims appears to have handled the provocation as it deserves to be : by ignoring it.

And let's not forget the media : they have done their very best to create another row following the baptism in the roman catholic church - by pope Benedict XVI - of an ex muslim, during the pascal vigil in St Peter's basilica in Rome. Fortunately, "la sauce n'a pas prise" as we say over here, but they have tried their very, very best anyway.

First law

In my professional life I developed a law stating that the amount of study and project work on any given investment was inversely proportional to the scale of the investment.

Now I have my first law of blogging : the length of any given post is inversely proportional to the importance of the message developed in that post.

More often than not, I lose interest halfway through the lengthy arguments ...

Lunacy !

Sheer, unadulterated madness !!

See : http://www.transworldnews.com/NewsStory.aspx?id=41392&cat=12. I am too disgusted to even type the title.

If I had to choose between a world in which this kind of aberration is considered normal, and world domination by fundamentalist American evangelists (or by extremist islamists for that matter), I just might opt for world domination by the fundamentalists or extremists !!

Well, not really, but you get the gist of my story ...

Remains to be see whether this is a true story or a red herring, if that is the correct expression!

Popemobile

An interesting read : http://newshub.cnslis.com/2008/03/27/popemobile-shipped-to-us/.

Although this article gives me ample matter for thought, I shall refrain from commenting.

March 28 1760

On that day Joannes Josephus Broeckaert died in Wetteren where he had been born on January 26 1726 (I apparently missed to blog a post on him for that date). He married Maria Livina Matthijs who was born in Wetteren in 1730.

For the rest of the line : see "November 17 1674" and other posts.

Belgian inflation is at its highest level since september 1985. But who cares ?

Royalty

I never have been, am not, and never will be a fan of the royal family, or a royalist in se - there could be a slight difference between the two.

But the regular nagging and moaning about the cost of that institution in Belgium is more than I can bear.

There are millions of management teams worldwide, and tens, maybe hundreds of them in Belgium, who cost a zillion times more than our "national team".

And the heroes of free enterprise generally cannot even start to claim that there is a direct, provable relation between their sky high winnings (remunerations is not the right word), i.e. their cost to the entities they are supposed to lead - and their efficiency, or the economic and financial results which they "generate". More often than not, when they generate results they do so by cutting labor costs : lowering the cost of their product and shifting the burden to the detriment of society as a whole.

By comparison with many of those - often self declared - heroes, our royal team might come out clear winners in efficiency and "social productivity" after all.

So let's stop whining about the cost of our royal family, and address the real problems !

Crude, but ...

An experienced economist and a not so experienced economist are walking down the road. They see some shit lying on the asphalt.

The experienced economist: "If you eat it I'll give you $ 20,000!"
The not so experienced economist runs his optimization problem and figures out he's better off eating it so he does and collects the money.
Continuing along the same road they almost step into yet another shit.
The not so experienced economist: "Now, if you eat this shit I'll give you $ 20,000."
After evaluating the proposal, the experienced economist eats the shit and gets the money.
They go on.
Then the not so experienced economist starts thinking: "Listen, we both have the same amount of money we had before, but we both ate shit. I don't see us being better off."
The experienced economist: "Well, that's true, but you overlooked the fact that we've been just involved in $ 40,000 of trade."

Koningshuis

So what ?

March 27 1833

Anna Maria De Ridder, who had been born in Sint Kwintens Lennik in 1752, died in Pamel. She married her second husband Judocus De Doncker (Pamel 1755 - 1835) in 1787. Anna Maria had six children with her first husband and three with Judocus.

In 1815, their daughter Anna Catharina De Doncker (Pamel 1791 - Okegem 1865) married Adrianus Neukermans (Okegem 1788 - 1860). They had six children and were the grandparents of my great-grandfather Hermilianus Neukermans (Okegem 1855 - 1932).

Homo economicus

Zie : http://www.standaard.be/Artikel/Detail.aspx?artikelId=H11PS18M&kanaalid=336.

Bedankt, meneer Lorin Parys.

Plantin

I have a shameful confession to make.

Up till today I never visited the old city of Antwerp. There is no love lost between Ghent, an old Flemish city, and Antwerp, a Brabant upstart with an attitude.

All I knew in the old city of Antwerp where the cathedral, which I visited twice before, and city hall.

Today, with a couple of very good friends, we visited the cathedral, the meat hall (Vleeshuis), the courtyard of the old stock exchange and found St Paul's church closed.

A splendid well preserved older German priest was pointing around and hammering on the panels (explaining the treasures we never saw) with his umbrella, clearly impressing a younger acolyte who accompanied him. I couldn't see the young one's collar, but I think he was a priest too, maybe the secretary of number one who had certain episcopal traits (in French we spoke about the coup de crosse I think). I couldn't avoid thinking that for some Germans things rarely ever change - they feel perfectly at home in a city they partially destroyed with their - were it V-1 or V-2 missiles ? - long after Antwerp had been liberated. Let's not forget that the objective of the von Rundstedt offensive was the port of Antwerp.

But I'm getting carried away once more by my very well known "love" for Germany and all things German. Yes, I bear a grudge. No, I will never forget !

The Jesuit St Carolus Borromeus church was a fantastic discovery. I like it even better than the cathedral.

And then we visited the Plantin Moretus museum - which just escaped the German rockets as most of the Vrijdagmarkt where it stands was pulverised.

I expected to find a small and dullish museum, but it turned out to be one of the more fascinating museums I ever visited. We spent a long time in there. We had been warned that visitors had to leave by a quarter to five. We came to the reception desk just in time. We wanted to buy the visitors guide and got a none too friendy anwer from an attendant that the shop closed at four thirty because they had to do their accounts.

As a confirmed contrarian, I buy my guides after my visits : I want to be sure that I get some value for my euro. So we went out empty handed but satisfied with the visit nevertheless.

Mister mayor, why do you keep open a world famous museum and frustrate possible visitors from abroad who leave at the last moment and thus cannot acquire the guide or the other available publications any more ?

Are these fifteen minutes really that important to the orderly administration of the city ? A little flexibility would help, but then administration and flexibilty never made a good pair.

And just to be fair, some years ago, the same distinghuised company presented itself at the Gruuthuuse museum in Bruges exactly one minute - I kid you not - after the time at which the last visitors were admitted. We never got in. Well, we eventualy did, a couple of years later.

Keeping open and guarding musea may well be one of the most monotonous jobs on earth, but pwleeeze, a little flexibility never hurt nobody.

Anyway, we already decided to continue the discovery of Antwerp (Rubenshuis, museum Mayer Van den Bergh etc etc) at a later date. A day well spent after all.

Bertje in Peking

Zie :http://www.gentblogt.be/2008/03/21/van-christus-robinson-en-goede-vrijdag#more-10061.

I myself was there on serious business you know.

But never forget

Nothing new

In the early nineties I was a staunch defender of the thesis that the USA had a brilliant future still. At that time there was a surge of books and opinions prophesying the demise of the American empire. Most of my colleaugues thought I was a delusional madman, unwilling to see the truth.

Almost twenty years later (and hopefully somewhat wiser), I must agree with them. America is crumbling away : it may well be in its death throes. Not from exterior threats, but from internal economic, demographical, social, moral and political weakness.

It all came back to me while I was surfing around and found the following quote by Abraham Lincoln :

“At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it? Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step the Ocean, and crush us at a blow? Never! All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years. At what point, then, is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide".

I cannot judge in other fields, but in the economic field the USA are a giant standing on feet of brittle clay. Unlimited greed made them that way. Unlimited greed may be the internal and external force bringing the giant down.

I wrote that the USA are crumbling away ; hopefully they don't come down with a bang, taking a major part of the world down with them.

Fora

No longer !

.. Is euthanasie (g)een heldendaad ? Geen.

.. Moeten we de Olympische Spelen boycotten ? Zeker en vast.

.. Blijven we de werken van Claus lezen ? Never did, never will.

I couldn't care less.

Poor sods

"The Greatest Speeches of All-Time", an American product, comprises 39 speeches on three dvd's.

My free translation of comments in De Standaard :

"The idea that most of the best speeches of all time were given by American politicians and opinion leaders is so pompously ridiculous that it makes one grin. Such a degree of self delusion can only be labeled as a typical symptom of American imperialism."

And the editors apparently are worse than creationists because for them time started in 1932.

There are, of course, no TV shots of Cicero, but still ...

March 25 1724

Joannes De Vidts died in Pamel where he had been born on March 9 1651.

See the post for that date.

Climate ?

After an extremely stormy winter, now we finally had some snow on the night of Easter sunday, but most of it has melted away this morning.

Somebody up there has completely lost it. I think the Lord will have to change part of his management team.

But then that's the price we pay for our irresponisble, yeh indecent behavior isn't it ? Climate change ?

Sorry ...

... I have tried, but I couldn't resist.

From the notorious Brussels Journal :
"An article by Alain-Jean Mairet reveals the collaboration of Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey with Iran. When I first saw the photo above I had trouble grasping who or what that was on the left. But it is indeed Mme Calmy-Rey, looking like a mummy with tissue paper on her head and concluding a deal with the president of Iran to purchase cheap Iranian gas."

Zie : http://www.tijd.be/artikel/Danneels_verwijst_naar_euthanasie_Claus.6570093.

March 23 2160

The very next time Easter will be celebrated on March 23.

March 23 1613

Steven Lievens was born in Denderhoutem, a son of Petrus who died in the wame village in 1647 and of Elisabeth Guns, who died there in 1651.

Steven married Petronella Van der Haegen (Denderhoutem 1625 - 1691) in 1643 and must have died before 1652 as his wife remarried in June of that year. To the best of my knowledge, she had two children with her first husband, and two with the second.

Their daughter Elisabeth Lievens was born in Denderhoutem in 1644. She married Joannes Wynant, who died in 1692.

Gisbertus Wynant, one of their children (Denderhoutem 1672 - 1743), married Livina Lievens (Denderhoutem 1675 - 1742). I haven't yet looked at the possible and probable kinship between Livina and the forementioned Lievens.

Their daughter Elisabeth Wynant (Denderhoutem 1698 - 1781) married Egidius Goossens (Denderhoutem1695 - 1762).

Once more we are on familiar grounds : see "November 8 1693".

March 23 1600

Willem Walravens died in St Pieters Leeuw, the cradle of the - to this day - very extended family. Guillam was an important man : in 1585 he rented three farms in Brukom. He married two or three times.

-- Fact : most of the following lines consists of the offspring of famous, generally well to do, farmer ("pachter") families in Flemish Brabant (the Pajottenland).

-- Fact : I descend from Willem Walravens in a couple of ways at least.

-- Fact : some of those lines are bluried, because I possess contradictory secondary sources.

Nicolaes Walravens (born ca 1570, died in Pamel 1642) was a son of Guillam and Joanna De Leeuw. He married Maria Eylenbosch.

Their son Nicolaus Walravens (Pamel ca 1610 - Gooik 1666) married Maria Evenepoel (born ca 1600, died in Gooik in 1671).

--- I descend from their daughter Anna (born in Meerbeke in 1636) who married Egidius Huylenbroeck. Thir son Adrianus Huylenbroeck (probably born in St Kwintens Lennik, died in Pamel in 1699) married Maria Schandevijl (Pamel 1655 - 1734).

They had a daughter Catharina Huylenbroeck (Pamel ca 1685 - 1751) who married Gasparus Van der Sleyen (Pamel ca 1685 - 1751).

We are in familiar territory here : see the post "January 22 1670" and many others.

--- I descend from their son or grandson Joannes Jacobus Walravens (born in Gooik in 1667). This is were various sources come in play, but the source listing him as their son has grown to have a "reputation" with me - I have found other errors and inconsistencies in other lines. And his date of birth too contradicts that hypothesis.

So - until further notice - I shall accept that the line was as follows. Nicolaus and Maria Evenepoel had a son Nicolaes (born in Meerbeke in 1638, murdered in Neigem in 1692) who married Magdalena De Ro (who died in Gooik in 1693). They had a son Joannes Jacobus, born in Gooik in 1667.

Joannes Jacobus married twice. With Maria Thienpont (Gooik 1661 - 1709) he had Maria Theresia Walravens (Gooik 1700 - 1750) who married Michael Galmaert (born in 1690, died in Gooik in 1786).

Familiar territory again : see "March 11 1786 " and many others.

Easter (2)

Contrary to what most people think, Easter is the most important christian holy day, not Christmas. It also is my favorite.

One of the reasons - besides the religious ones - is that the easter bunny and chiks are tame (and lame) players, in no way comparable to Coca Cola's hellish invention : the catastrophic father christmas.

That guy simply is a denatured santa claus, an inveterate boozer, who drinks so much that he systematically comes 19 days late (december 25 instead of december 6). And by the way, he does not drink pure cola, oh no ! Look at his nose. He even feeds the stuff to his reindeers : see poor Rodolph's red nose ! The guy should be put in jail, to cool off (or to warm up, what is it ?).

Easter falls between March 22 at the very earliest and April 24 at the very latest. 2008 is an extremely early Easter. It is 95 years ago that Easter fell on March 23 in 1913, the year my father was born.

And an extremely cold Easter it is too : it is freezing right now. Fortunately there is no snow (yet). I remember a white Easter in 1975, that is I remember the fact and the event, not the year - my newspaper helped me out. I have a picture - somewhere - of my eldest niece, collecting easter eggs in the snow in the very small garden of the house we then lived in. She must have been six years young then.

***

I do not want to start a sermon on the meaning of Easter - I couldn't even if I wanted to.
But remember, even if you have no religion : one of the messages of Easter is that nothing - no one - ever is lost for good. Keep hoping and do not be afraid !

Happy Easter, zalig Pasen !

Easter

From The Messiah by Georg Friedrich Haendel. And the singer is not Jim Carey.

and ... different, but still the same :

March 22 1743

Catharina Van Nieuwenhove died in Pamel where she had been born on August 12 1663. She married Petrus De Vidts (Pamel 1655 - 1726).

Judocus De Vidts (Pamel 1703 - 1750) was the last of their three children. He married Catharina Theresia Van Cauwelaert (Pamel 1729 -1805).

See : "February 14 1729" and various older posts.

March 22 1859

Regina Menschaert died in Nederhasselt, where she had been born ca 1799. She married Franciscus Meganck (Nederhasselt ca 1798 - 1869). I still have to look up their children but one : Virginia Meganck (Nederhasselt 1834 - 1917), my great-great-grandmother.

Virginia married Petrus Josephus Goessens (Nederhasselt 1836 - 1928). They had eight children, three of which were born before they eventually married. A distant relative of mine, who also is a descendant of Petrus Josephus and Virginia, is trying to clarify the mysteries surrounding this couple : why did they marry so late ? Was there an important social "chasm" between the spouses ? Why was their oldest daughter born in Brussels ?

Their eldest daughter Maria Elisabeth Goessens (Brussels 1862 - Meerbeke 1834) married Josephus Timmermans (Meerbeke 1858 - 1928). They were my great-grandparents. I wrote about them on various occasions : see "March 8 1862" and others.

Universiteiten

Zie : http://www.standaard.be/Artikel/Detail.aspx?artikelId=3K1PO9S9&word=torfs+oosterlinck.

Tibet and Pelosi

From : http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23741257/.

" US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called on the world Friday to denounce China's crackdown of anti-government protests in Tibet, calling the crisis 'a challenge to the conscience of the world.'

Pelosi, one of the fiercest Congressional critics of China, was greeted by cheering Tibetans as she arrived to meet the Dalai Lama. She is the first major official to visit the leader of Tibet's exile community since peaceful protests turned violent last week in the Chinese-ruled region.

'If freedom-loving people throughout the world do not speak out against China's oppression in China and Tibet, we have lost all moral authority to speak on behalf of human rights anywhere in the world,' Pelosi said before a crowd of thousands of Tibetans, including monks and schoolchildren. "

'The situation in Tibet is a challenge to the conscience of the world,' she said. "

I fullheartedly agree with the comments, but look who's talking ? One of the most powerful representatives of Amercian democracy. And what about Iraq, Myanmar, Darfour, the Middle East and countless other regions in this powder keg of a world ?

Amercians, please stop giving lessons to the rest of the world ! Clean up your own act first and we will welcome you with open arms and open hearts again !

The dismal science

That's the economy, you stupid !

Greg Mankiv, a Harvard professor of economy demonstrating the deft common touch for which Harvard economists are famous (are they ?) :

"No issue divides economists and mere Muggles more than the debate over globalization and international trade. Where the high priests of the dismal science see opportunity through the magic of the market’s invisible hand, Joe Sixpack sees a threat to his livelihood."

See : http://crookedtimber.org/2008/03/20/thank-you-mr-mankiw/. The comments are worth wile.

And if you don't know what a muggle is, you're seriously outpaced. So was I : I had to look it up in Wikipedia.

Good Friday

From St Matthew Passion by J.S. Bach

Sitemeter again

One of my most recent posts got a reaction from a spammer, who appears to be located in Brasil.

How come a Brazilian computer can leave a message on my site while my sitemeter tells me that, at that time, I haven't had a single visitor from outside Belgium ?

Computers ... and statistics !

March 20 1892

My paternal grandmother Rosalia Margaretha (Margriet) Ravijst was born in Meerbeke. She was one of (at least) six children of Petrus Joannes Ravijst (Nieuwenhove 1861 - Meerbeke 1944) and Joanna Maria (Leontien) De Schepper (Meerbeke 1864 - 1926).

She married Pieter Jozef Timmermans (Meerbeke 1886 - 1953) and they had seven children, five of which lived to adulthood. My father was their second child.

Margriet died in the university hospital in Ghent on December 2 1973 - exactly twenty years minus two days after her husband, and one day before my 33d birthday.

She was the longest lived of my grandparents, and not the easiest of characters. Seen from that point of view, I cannot deny she was my grandmother !

I know little or nothing about her forebears : her father was a natural child - father unknown so he bore his mother's name ; her father's mother married but I do not know where (the few surviving family members do not have the information) and up to now I have been unable to trace the provenance of his maternal grandparents beyond the early 19th century, but then I haven't made a priority of that research. I still have a very significant lot of work to do on this branch of my genealogy.

But as I stated often enough before, my grandmother's maternal grandmother Antonia De Vidts, born in Pamel in 1840, was the sister of my mother's maternal grandfather, Felix De Vidts (Pamel 1853 - 1940).

More : see various previous posts.

March 20 1774

Maria Anna Goossens was born in Denderhoutem. She was a daughter of Franciscus Goossens (Denderhoutem 1733 - 1778) and of Joanna Catharina De Dier (Denderhoutem 1738 - 1822). Joanna Catherina married three times and had eight children with Franciscus, her second husband, and none with her first and third spouses.

Maria Anna married Paulus Franciscus Vlaeminck (Massemen 1773 - Aalst 1819) with whom she had nine children. She remarried, without children, and died in Denderhoutem on September 17 1852.

My great-great-grandmother Coleta Vlaeminck (Denderhoutem 1813 - 1891) was her seventh child. See various earlier posts including "March 16 1813".

China

Afrika ? Ze hebben het zelf gezocht ! enz. enz. Business is business, and greed is greed.

At last

It is probable that by tomorrow night this small - in more senses than one can imagine - this small country of ours will have a new federal government. In the 67 years of my life, I have never seen a more disquieting and badly played charade than the one which has been put on stage since june last year.

But there it is : we will be "blessed" with a government without a team, without a programme, without a budget, without a term and without a leader - not my invention ; these qualifications are written down in a comment of De Standaard. Its merit will be that it will exist for as long as it lasts, which most probably won't be very long. God help us all.

March 18 1866

Maria Elisabeth Borremans, who had been born in Strijtem ca 1798, died in Okegem. She was the wife of Joannes Van de Perre (Okegem 1801 - 1875).

They had seven children : the fifth was Joanna Catharina Van de Perre (Okegem 1838 - 1914)who married Karel Bernardus Broeckaert (Wetteren 1832 - Okegem 1928).

Joanna Catharina and Karel Bernardus are my great-great-grandparents. They were the parents of my maternal grandfather's mother. This couple has been mentioned in various previous posts.

March 18 1664

Joanna De Troyer died in Pamel. She had been the first spouse of Adrianus Van der Sleyen in 1648. Her husband remarried and died in Pamel in 1691.

In the post "March 15 1643" I wrote that Gasparus De Troyer was the father of Joanna, and that his own ascendance had to be checked. If I had thought for ten seconds instead of copying my existing file, it would have become apparent that : either Gasparus was not her father, or the date of his birth in 1643 is totally wrong. There was another, older, Gasparus De Troyer in Pamel who might be a candidate for the fatherhood.

I may have new information in about a month's time, when the second part of the "Gezinsreconstructie gemeente Pamel" will be published.

Bloggers

If you don't like my blog, that is your problem. You can stop reading my ruminations, or remember the deep truth uttered by Dirty Harry of San Francisco fame : "Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one."

Challenging times

From http://locustofevil.blogspot.com/.

"The Fed is on high alert -- something you don't see but once every quarter century; maybe, in this case, since the Great Depression. This is a very unusual period," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Economy.com.

Jesus. The war, the economy, the ballooning deficit - has this administration done anything positive in the past seven years? They're doing a hell of a good job of destroying America."

Grossly overstated ? Remains to be seen.

Anyway, Americans (and the whole world !) are going to pay through the nose before the situation is "normalised". And a sobering thought : another administration (president) might have acted differently on the war. But on the other problems ? I'm not too sure.

Honor roll

"Ere wie ere toekomt".

Alan Greenspan, from 1987 to 2006 chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve of the United States.

One of the many, many, many fathers of the present crisis. And probably one of the few well intentioned ones - but then the way to hell is paved with good intentions.

The real father of the crisis - and the inspiration for all the other ones - is Greed Never Enough G. Greed.

Crisis ? Allez zeg !

Zie : http://www.standaard.be/Krant/Beeld/.

I don't think so.

Rotzooi TV

Zie : http://www.standaard.be/Artikel/Detail.aspx?artikelId=891PDPLV.

I don't think so !

"Verkooppaniek"
"Federal Reserve doet nieuwe noodingreep"
"JP Morgan Chase koopt Bear Sterns voor twee dollar per aandeel"
"Tokio keldert tot laagste peil in twee jaar"
"Aandeel Siemens onderuit na winstalarm"
"Roulerta dondert 12 procent lager"
"Carlyle Capital start liquidatie"
"Euro en olie blijven pieken"
"Goldman Sachs moet drie miljard dollar afschrijven"

Pilots and war

The German pilot who shot down French author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in 1944, said that he is sorry he did it. He said that he never would have fired if he had known who was piloting the other plane.

See : http://www.standaard.be/Artikel/Detail.aspx?artikelId=601PD0C7.

That is a very nice, if very late, and somewhat gratuitous feeling indeed.

Real guilt lies with those who start wars for the greater glory of their country or for their self-aggrandisement. And every soldier killed was a Saint-Exupéry for someone else.

I first wrote "guilt lies with the criminals who start wars ... " but then I realised once more that, with the exception of super-criminal mass murderers and thugs like Hitler, Stalin etc, the defining factor is not ethics - not who was right and who was wrong - but simply who came out the winner, because history is written by the winners.

World economy

I am getting very seriously worried. But then you should know - before you read any further - that I am a solid pessimist.

The crisis in the financial markets is deepening from day to day, and even the biggest American banks are feeling the stress and paying for their past excesses. Governments and their central banks are starting to see the seriousness of the situation, without necessarily admitting it, and are clueless as to what to do about it. Apparently, all they can think of is digging new holes to fill older ones. And the holes are getting bigger and bigger.

I am afraid that this may be the beginning of the worst episode since the world shattering crisis of the thirties and that we all are going to pay a very heavy price for the excesses of the totally uncontrolled world financial system. Not only is it uncontrolled, it now is finally out of control.

Confidence is gone and I see no authority able to restore it, most certainly not the totally discredited US government or any of the international financial institutes who had so much to say about how emerging economies had to manage their problems.

We are gliding in a serious dip - I won't use the word abyss for now.

And of course, it is the average Joe who is going to pay, because the moguls always find a way or two to save their day. Millions of Joe's like me worked hard to provide for a carefree old day, but rapacious bankers and entrepreneurs decided otherwise.

And woe to Joe and Jane who still have to work to earn their living and to educate their children !

Depression ? Or rampaging inflation ? Both are lethal for Joe average.

Since I started this blog, I have been writing that we need another world economic system. Maybe this crisis, which in my view - and I most sincerely hope I am wrong - is only beginning, may be the detonator we need to start looking for alternative solutions.

Juist ja.

Palm Sunday

A well known illustration of the fickleness of public opinion : triomphal entry in Jerusalem on Sunday ; death by crucifixion on Friday. I love those icons, and I love ... Holy Week.

I now fondly remember the services we were obliged to participate in during our "college" (high school) years, but in those days we hated the unending and annoying liturgies of the pascal triduum. How people can change !

The services themselves have been altered in a very significant way since the second Vatican council (I am a pre-Vatican council product). Though I long for the commanding and imposing Roman stage management and majesty of yesteryear, I have to admit that the present services are impressive in their own right.

March 16 1813

My great-great-grandmother Coleta Vlaeminck was born in Denderhoutem. She was the seventh of nine children of Paulus Franciscus (Massemen 1773 - Aalst 1819) and of Maria Anna Goossens (Denderhoutem 1774 - 1852). Maria Anna remarried after Paulus Franciscus died but had no more offspring.

Coleta married twice : first with Josephus Baeyens (Denderhoutem 1805 - 1846) with whom she had five children ; then with Franciscus Muylaert (Nieuwerkerken 1818 - 1888) with whom she had three children, the eldest of which was my great-grandmother Blondina Muylaert (Denderhoutem 1849 - Pamel 1942). Blondina thus had a younger brother and a sister (who were twins), as well as four half-sisters and a half-brother.

Blondina Muylaert has been mentioned in many previous posts.

March 15 1824

My great-great-grandfather Amandus Neukermans was born in Okegem, still under the Dutch regime. He was the fourth of six children of Adrianus (Okegem 1788 - 1860) and Anna Catharina De Doncker (Pamel 1791 - Okegem 1865).

Amandus died, 33 years old, on July 4 1857, leaving his widow Catharina Asselman (Okegem 1823 - 1892) with the care for five children.

My great-grandfather Hermilianus (Okegem 1855 - 1932) was the fourth of their children. He never knew his father.

March 15 1643

Gasparus De Troyer was born in Pamel. I'm not quite sure yet about his parents.

His daughter Joanna De Troyer married Adrianus Van der Sleyen in 1648. She died in 1664 ; he remarried and died in 1691.

The rest of the line has been described in various posts including "October 26 1691 (2)".

Dollar

This post might be of interest to my American readers, but it depends entirely on an alleged quote by president Bush. I have no confirmation of that quote (yet) and I shall not translate my comments until then.

Filtering

Do a Google for "the confused contrarian" and select images. You will find 88 hits, one of which comes from my blog. The 87 others come from one of the blogs of Jeffrey Smith "Let Britannia Rise", http://letbritanniarise.blogspot.com/.

Jeff who is a very active blogger with some ten blogs (and magnificant pictures and illustrations) has put a link to my blog on Let Britannia Rise. I really enjoy his blogs and rarely miss a day !

Now, I might consider starting a grumble because Google ignores the (very average) pictures in my blog. Quite the contrary, Jeffrey's illustrations are a joy for the eye and Google does us all a favor in selecting them !

And boy, do I also enjoy his rantings on historical, religious or even architectural subjects !!

Keep going, Jeffrey !

Kleine oorzaken ...

March 14 1636

Anna Walravens was born in Meerbeke, a daughter of Nicolaus (Pamel ca 1610 - Gooik 1666) and of Maria Evenepoel (born ca 1600 - died in Gooik 1671).

Anna married Egidius Huylenbroeck (Pamel). Their son Adrianus Huylenbroeck was born in St Kwintens Lennik and died in Pamel in 1699. His spouse was Maria Schandevijl (Pamel 1655 - 1734). Their daughter Catharina (Pamel ca 1685 - 1751) married Gasparus Van der Sleyen (Palmel 1686 - 1749).

The line has been described may times before; For instance in the post "January 22 1670".

The earlier stages of this line have to be reexamined, because there are some apparently contradictory secondary sources available. But I am having serious doubts about one of those sources, because I have found other errors in it. Time and additional research will tell ...

March 13 1770

Nicolaus Van Eeckhoudt died in Gooik, where he had been born ca 1686. He married Maria Bellemans (Gooik 1696 - 1770).

Their son Augustinus (Gooik 1727 - Pamel 1775) married Joanna Maria Janssens (Pamel 1729 - 1790).

Augustinus and Joanna Maria had a daughter Petronella Van Eeckhoudt (Pamel 1771 - 1828), and Petronella was the mother of Maria Elisabeth Van der Sleyen (Pamel 1811 - 1860), my mother's great-grandmother and my father's great-great-grandmother. Maria Elisabeth has been named in numerous previous posts.

An interesting detail : Maria Bellemans was a daughter of Adrianus Bellemans (Gooik 1670 -1752) and Catharina (Maria) Appelmans (Gooik 1656 -1733).

When Catharina married Adrianus, she was the widow of Judocus Timmermans (Gooik 1649 - 1694). This is an exemple of the intricate web of family relations in my ancestry in Pamel, Gooik etc.

I descend from Catharina Appelmans through a son out of her first marriage : Joannes Timmermans (Gooik 1686 - Meerbeke 1769), and through a daughter out of her second marriage : Maria Bellemans. Moreover both my father and my mother descended from Maria through her granddaughter Maria Elisabeth Van der Sleyen.

March 13 1690

Egidius Meganck died in Denderhoutem. He was a son of Adrianus, born in 1600 and of Maria Cromphaut.

Egidius married Maria Van Muylem (Denderhoutem 1638 - 1708) in 1663 and they had six children.

Maria Meganck (Denderhoutem 1666 - 1734) married Franciscus De Dier, who died in 1715.

The line has been described in various posts, including "January 25 1734" and "November 26 1650".

Bankiers

Anschluss

On 12 March 1938, German troops marched into Austria and Hitler declared "Anschluss", or political union.

The anniversary of the Anschluss has revived debate among Austrians about whether they were victims or supporters of the Third Reich.

Otto von Habsburg, 95, the son of Austria's last emperor, told a commemorative meeting that no state in Europe had "a greater right than Austria to call itself a victim".

But the president of the lower house of parliament, Barbara Prammer, told Wednesday's session that Austrians were complicit in Nazi crimes. She said any suggestion that they had been forced to commit atrocities was a "fiction of history".

Excerpts from : http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7291420.stm.

I know nothing about Mrs Prammer, but I think she is right, and the archduke is grievously wrong.

Wall Street

Under the title "Rich man's capitalism", a blogger I visit now and again, writes :

"Market is up 400 after the Fed agreed to knowingly back bad debt.
Hoping to ease the credit crisis, the Fed -- acting with the European Central Bank, the Bank of Canada and the Swiss National Bank -- agreed to loan investment banks money in exchange for debt, including slumping mortgage-backed securities."

"Wall Street's version of capitalism: privatize the profit, socialize the cost. No consequences for bad risk taking -- the rich get richer and the rest of us pick up the tab. It's not like the Fed is loaning money against good paper... the Fed is loaning money against paper they know is bad."
See : http://think-dammit.blogspot.com/.

I do not often agree with this lady's writings, but for once she is absolutely right. Except for one small detail : rich man's capitalism is a pleonasm.

The great divide

An Englishman looks at the great divide (see : http://rndman.blogspot.com/).

"So the Americans don't understand our sense of humour, and why so many of our top comedy sit-coms are based on self-deprecation - like "One Foot in the Grave", "Fawlty Towers" or "The Office". Can I suggest that this is a matter of national maturity? We as a nation are old enough to be able to look at the world and see it for what it really is, whereas the USA still has to bolster its self-confidence by constantly telling itself how great it is. So we have Victor Meldrew and they have Rambo."

Allo allo

The BBC is reported to have sold all 83 episodes of the "comical" tv series "Allo allo" to the German ProSiebenSat1. The series is situated in a Normandy village during the German occupation.

A miracle ? A German station is going to broadcast an English series in which German soldiers are depicted as stupid, incompetent nincompoops ?

**

Personally I can't stand "Allo allo" which - to me - is one of the most stupid concoctations ever to have been produced by the BBC. And I simply can't stand the way in which the English generally depict the French, in their tv series, in "historical dramas" genre "cloack and dagger", and even in their movies in general. It remains clear for all to see that France has been (is ?) the age-old natural enemy of the English. On English tv the French are stupid, treacherous, wine-gobbling bastards, period.

But fortunately, there are also series like "Dad's army". Now there you have a little jewel. I don't see the Germans buying that very soon.

British citizens suspect ?

From the always suspect Brussels Journal :

"U.S. Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff has announced in the last few days that all British citizens flying across the U.S. to Canada, South America, etc., will be checked to see if they pose a possible terrorist threat, and will not be allowed to fly if they do. This will apply even if the plane does not touch down on U.S. soil. Chertoff’s recent statement is not the first indication of the U.S. distancing itself from the country, however. Notably, last year the Bush administration announced that Britain was no longer its top ally, and that this spot had been taken by Germany and France.

Sadly, this shift in emphasis makes sense. While many Americans cling to the image of the old-fashioned Englishman in suit, tie and bowler hat, the new Brit is radically different, and, it would seem, some are increasingly radicalized. It is a matter of statistical probability rather than bizarre coincidence that the day after the Daily Mail newspaper reported Chertoff’s comments it carried an article on the investigation of four London policemen by Britain’s secret service, MI5. The policemen in question are believed to be an Al Qaeda sleeper-cell that has been passing information to the terrorist organization.

Al Qaeda and related groups are probably more entrenched in Britain than anywhere else in the Western world, and plan to be there for the long haul. In recent months a DVD made by Islamic extremists, and teaching children about suicide bombing, has been found on sale there. Its Islamicized Tweety-Bird mascot betrays not only an understanding of modern Western culture but also that the intended audience was probably well under ten years of age. More immediately worrying, there are approximately 1,600 terrorist suspects at large in the country, constituting 200 terrorist networks working on 30 terrorist plots. Considering the hostility of Islamic militants to the U.S., it seems likely that more than a few are aimed at that country."

An interesting point

' In a March 7 address to the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences, Pope Benedict XVI said that the study of history is particularly valuable today, to address "a society which, heedless of its own past and hence lacking criteria acquired through experience, is no longer capable of harmonious coexistence or joint commitment in realizing future aims."

"Such a society is particularly vulnerable to ideological manipulation," the Pope told the group. He said that the study of history today is being warped by "a methodology which draws inspiration from positivism and sociology" and ignores "entire epochs" because of its ideological blinders.

In the past, the Holy Father continued, the Vatican has been concerned about an approach to history that was "hostile to the Church." But now the situation is more adverse, he said, because "it is historiography itself that is going through a serious crisis." The objective study of history is endangered by "a boundless enthusiasm for progress," which prompt scholars to see the past only as "a dark backdrop against which the "present and future glitter with misleading promise."

Pope Benedict affirmed that the Church takes a keen interest in the study of history, confident that an accurate understanding of past events will vindicate the claims of Christian truth. '

Miserie in Pamel - 3

10 maart 1668 :

Miserie in Pamel - 2

Miserie in Pamel - 1

7 maart 1685 :

They don't have a clue.

March 9 1651

Joannes De Vidts was born in Pamel, the fifth of nine children of Petrus De Vidts (Pamel ca 1618 - 1668) and Josina Van Nieuwenhove (born in Aspelare or Appelterre, deceased in Pamel in 1668).

Joannes married Maria De Vleminck, who died in Pamel in 1716. They had four children at least. The line has been described in post "February 12 1658".

March 8 1862

My great-grandmother Maria Elisabeth Goessens was born in Brussels. She was the first child of Petrus Josephus Goessens (Nederhasselt 1836 - 1928) and Virginia Meganck (Nederhasselt 1834 - 1917). She died in Meerbeke on August 12 1934.

In 1883 she married Josephus Timmermans (Meerbeke 1858 - 1929) and according to what I heard from my parents, they had 11 children. I counted 13 in the archives, but there is some confusion about the first names, which I shall have to clear up, if that is still possible. How soon memory fades ...

There is some mystery surrounding Maria Elisabeth (I published her photo in an earlier post). She was born in Brussels, while her father and mother were born, married and died in Nederhasselt. She was the eldest of seven children, three of whom were born out of wedlock and legalised when their parents finally married in Nederhasselt in 1871.

I have been helped in this search by a person who, although totally unknown to me until a couple of years ago, is a nephew twice removed of Maria Elisabeth (his grandmother was her sister).

Maybe Petrus and Virginia had found work in Brussels, maybe they had eloped because Virginia's parents did not agree with their relationship (my contact remembers to have heard that the "bride's " family were relatively well to do). Maybe they fled to Brussels to avoid the scandal of the illegitimate birth, but then their two other illegitimate daughters were born in Nederhasselt. According to my distant relative, they finally married after both Virginia's parents had died.

How soon memory fades ... my father might have known the full story, although I consider that improbable - kids were not told that kind of stuff - they had to leave the room when a conversation went that way - his parents certainly did know it. But my grandfather passed away in 1953 when I was still a kid ; his spouse in 1973, long before I knew enough about the family to ask her anything about this situation. And she was not the kind of person who would have reacted favorably to that kind of question anyway ! And now, most probably, it will remain a mystery forever ...

Disgusting (2)

"London’s ambition to hold the first car-free Olympics in 2012 is being undermined by the International Olympic Committee’s demand for more than 3,000 chauffeur-driven cars for dignitaries, officials and corporate sponsors.

These cars will have access to a network of dedicated lanes, which will be closed to other traffic for up to two months. Up to 3,000 sets of traffic lights will also be adjusted to ensure that the IOC’s fleet has fast access to all venues.

Those whom the IOC insists need cars, in addition to receiving free access to public transport, include the 110 IOC members, 400 presidents and secretary-generals from the Olympic committees of the 200 competing nations and 450 senior executives from corporate sponsors. None of the 10,500 athletes will have access to the 3,145 cars and will instead travel on a dedicated fleet of coaches."

Provocatie

Doornaert poneert in haar column "Doorgeprikt staat netjes".

Machthebbers

Want "if you can't beat them, join them".

Luther was not a heretic ? Blimey, what else are they going to tell us ? I remember when I was in high school - OK I know that was ages and ages ago - talking to a protestant (even finding one was not easy) was almost considered a capital sin !

Vrijheid volgens Torfs

Prof. Rik Torfs in De Standaard :

Zie : http://www.standaard.be/Artikel/Detail.aspx?artikelId=681OTGMO.

Statistieken !!
