"Germany's domestic intelligence service has started a program for Islamic radicals who want help to quit extremism.The program started Monday and addresses people who believe in a "fanatic, violent ideology ... based on Islam."
The program called HATIF — meaning phone in Arabic — aims to help extremists to leave behind their fanatical environment.
They can contact members of the intelligence service online or call a specific number.
The agency — which says it is guaranteeing confidentiality — says it wants to help people get out by supporting them with finding jobs or moving to a different place.
The intelligence service estimates there are more than 36,000 Islamic extremists in Germany but only a fraction are considered potentially violent."

De Morgen weet dat "superterrorist" Abdelkader Belliraj zijn onschuld uitschreeuwt uit zijn Marokkanse cel waar hij een levenslange straf uizit.

Misschien heeft dat twijfelachtige individu niet alle misdaden begaan waarvoor hij veroordeeld werd : dan is het aan het Marokkaanse gerecht (nou ja) om het proces in beroep correct te af te werken, niet aan de Belgische media "in search of copy".
Héél, héél, héél misschien is die man totaal onschuldig. Hopelijk blijkt dat dan ook uit het tweede proces, maar dan kunnen de media beter een mea culpa slaan, want ze hebben indertijd een groot aantal lekkere stories uit zijn vermeende schuld gebrouwen.
Ik persoonlijk geloof niet in de onschuld van die man - hij schreeuwt juist iets te hard. Zijn avontuur zal mogelijke navolgers misschien twee keer doen nadenken.

I remember I was sitting in my easy chair, merrily zapping around.
Courtesy of CNN, I saw the plane crashing in the second WTC tower. A moment of utter disbelief and boiling horror and disgust never to be forgotten.
And eight years and two wars later (both still ungoing), we have learned nothing : the threat of extremism is still hanging over our heads, and the real sources of extremism and terrorism have not been tackled.

Enkele, meestal bittere, reflexies bij De Standaard vandaag.
-- De Walen en Brusselaars horen het donderen in Keulen. Onze bevoegde Vlaamse excellentie heeft de franstalige candidaten voor het burgemeesterschap in drie Brusselse randgemeenten voor de tweede maal afgewezen. Volgens de letter van de wet schijnt hij gelijk te hebben (ik ben geen jurist). Maar de wijsheid heeft hij blijkbaar niet in pacht, en de franstalige heethoofden in die drie gemeenten ook niet.
Toegeven is nooit leuk, maar die gemeenten zijn al lang een verloren zaak voor Flaanderen. Daar kan geen enkele wet en geen enkel "moedig" politiek besluit nog iets aan veranderen. Die politiek moed komt veertig - vijftig jaar te laat. Maar er kan wel nog uitvoerig gemarchandeerd worden, over BHV en dergelijke. De wereldwijde crisis wacht wel.

-- "Terreurvideo's zaaien onrust". Ja ja, dat komt ervan wanneer een kleintje wil meespelen met de groten der aarde. "Blague à part", want leuk is het echt niet : de videos worden zeer ernstig genomen "maar uiteraard is het niet uitgesloten dat het om een ziekelijke grap gaat." Een ziekelijke grap ? EEN GRAP ??? Wie zo'n video maakt en gebruikt is een ziekelijk crapuul. Waarschijnlijk zelfs een misdadig crapuul.
Echt of onecht, dit is er ver over !
Je zou zelfs bijna gaan betreuren dat - indien een van de drie personnages inderdaad een "levende bom" was - die bom niet is afgegaan gedurende het filmen.
Stel je even voor dat een groepje ziekelijke rechts-extremisten hier een dergelijk filmpje zou maken tegen een Arabisch land, of tegen homo-huwelijken, of tegen ... vul zelf maar in tegen wie of wat nog ... het land zou te klein zijn ! En terecht.
Maar misschien komt dit filmpje wel van zo'n debiel-achterlijk nazi -groepje dat nog wat wil stoken tegen onze islam broeders ? Lijkt het niet eigenaardig dat er enkels nederlandstalige bedreigingen zijn opgedoken ?
In ieder geval, wie hier achter zit, verdient om er achter te vliegen.

-- Een mogelijke pedofiel wordt geklist in Gent. Hij heeft wel een wereldvreemde buurman - of is het weer de journalist ? Die buur zou gezegd hebben: "Ik ben er zaterdagavond nog binnen geweest . ... Die meisjes liepen daar rond ... Ik vroeg nog of ze niet naar school moesten ..."
Op zaterdagavond ?
In deze gek gedraaide wereld mag men zich echt aan alles verwachten.

-- Op de website : België zou de automatische loonindexering beter afschaffen. Daardoor zou de kerninflatie sneller kunnen dalen. Dat zegt de Organisatie voor Economische Samenwerking en Ontwikkeling (Oeso).
Het economisch kernprobleem van de komende maanden ! Ik denk dat de muren van hun ivoren toren zo stilaan meters dik geworden zijn.

De algemeen hooggeprezen, zo goed als gepensioneerde Erich Zabel meent dat het wielrennen "de essentie van het echte leven" is. Ik hoop uit de grond van mijn hart dat hij zich vergist. Zo erg kan het toch niet zijn ?

Oradour ... remember
I visited Oradour-sur-Glane in September 2007 and was moved to the very core of my being. I posted the famous poem on that "village martyr" shortly after my return.
More than one year later, this is and remains the most frequently consulted post on my blog. It still is consulted regularly. This gives me a serene and deep joy because it shows that these people are not forgotten.

Morocco and Belgium
Apparently, Morocco does a better job of protecting us against possible terrorist attacks than our own police and government.

On the one side, a Belgian official said that authorities were not aware of the threat. On the other side, various sources claim that this group was the reason why there was a terrorism alert around Christmas time.

British citizens suspect ?
From the always suspect Brussels Journal :
"U.S. Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff has announced in the last few days that all British citizens flying across the U.S. to Canada, South America, etc., will be checked to see if they pose a possible terrorist threat, and will not be allowed to fly if they do. This will apply even if the plane does not touch down on U.S. soil. Chertoff’s recent statement is not the first indication of the U.S. distancing itself from the country, however. Notably, last year the Bush administration announced that Britain was no longer its top ally, and that this spot had been taken by Germany and France.
Sadly, this shift in emphasis makes sense. While many Americans cling to the image of the old-fashioned Englishman in suit, tie and bowler hat, the new Brit is radically different, and, it would seem, some are increasingly radicalized. It is a matter of statistical probability rather than bizarre coincidence that the day after the Daily Mail newspaper reported Chertoff’s comments it carried an article on the investigation of four London policemen by Britain’s secret service, MI5. The policemen in question are believed to be an Al Qaeda sleeper-cell that has been passing information to the terrorist organization.
Al Qaeda and related groups are probably more entrenched in Britain than anywhere else in the Western world, and plan to be there for the long haul. In recent months a DVD made by Islamic extremists, and teaching children about suicide bombing, has been found on sale there. Its Islamicized Tweety-Bird mascot betrays not only an understanding of modern Western culture but also that the intended audience was probably well under ten years of age. More immediately worrying, there are approximately 1,600 terrorist suspects at large in the country, constituting 200 terrorist networks working on 30 terrorist plots. Considering the hostility of Islamic militants to the U.S., it seems likely that more than a few are aimed at that country."

Congratulations
The 51 year old leader of a terrorist network has been arrested in Morocco. The guy has the Belgian and Moroccan nationality and lived near Ghent.
According to Moroccan authorities, he is a suspect in six murders committed in Belgium between 1986 and 1989. On the basis of the information received, the Belgian justice now has opened an enquiry.
