Allerheiligenvloed 1570

.
Het leven vlood en d'as blijft in onz' handen,
't verlangen stijgt om mede te vergaan.
Doch in den weemoed blijft één lichtje branden,
.

http://www.demorgen.be/dm/nl/994/Weirdo/article/detail/49498/2007/10/31/Mensen-kunnen-bij-huisdieren-begraven-worden-in-Luik.dhtml.

Is het vandaag 31 october of 1 april ??

Werkloosheid

Prachtig

Wooly diplomacy

Godfried cardinal Danneels of Mechelen-Brussels, Belgium, held a talk on liturgical renewal at The Catholic University of America. It is a point which I am quite interested in.

From what I have been able to read about it, it has been a significant and profound talk. But one sentence caught my attention :

"Participation and mutual celebration can lead to a subtle form of manipulation. ... Those who serve the liturgy, both priests and laity, become its owners" instead of its servants, he said. This can lead to trivializing the liturgy, eliminating the sacred and turning it from the worship it is supposed to be into a mere social event, he added.

The italics are mine. Either the cardinal is overly diplomatic - he very often is - or he is ill informed. Over the years I have seen more than subtle forms of manipulation by probably well intentioned but completely clueless priests and laity. I hope they will read the cardinal's speech, but will they get the point ?

Madness as a method

Some days ago, my attention was drawn to an article by Maureen Dawd in The New York Times of October 24 2007. The title was "Madness as a method".

The first lines were : "Dick Cheney’s craziness used to influence foreign policy.
Now it is foreign policy."

I decided not to refer to it because I thought some parts of it were grossly partial and overstated. I'm starting to think I was wrong.

Mad, madder ...

Released: October 29, 2007 - Zogby Poll: 52% Support U.S. Military Strike Against Iran

"A majority of likely voters – 52% – would support a U.S. military strike to prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon, and 53% believe it is likely that the U.S. will be involved in a military strike against Iran before the next presidential election, a new Zogby America telephone poll shows. The survey results come at a time of increasing U.S. scrutiny of Iran. According to reports from the Associated Press, earlier this month Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice accused Iran of "lying" about the aim of its nuclear program and Vice President Dick Cheney has raised the prospect of "serious consequences" if the U.S. were to discover Iran was attempting to develop a nuclear weapon. Last week, the Bush administration also announced new sanctions against Iran. "

Only 29 % think there will be no strike against Iran.

Has one out of two Americans gone mad ?? If this poll is significant, why is the president so hugely impopular ?

October 30 1667

Margaretha Muylaert died in Denderhoutem where she had been born in October 1604. She married Judocus Van der Speeten (Denderhoutem 1603 - 1648).

Their son Egidius Van der Speeten, born in Denderhoutem in 1634, had a son Petrus (Denderhoutem 1661 - 1707). Petrus has been reported on in "October 23 1707".

October 30 1763

Joanna Theresia Venneman was born in Schelderode : she was a daughter of Adrianus Venneman and of Adriana Joanna Velghe. She married Bernardus Broeckaert (Wetteren 1758 - Serskamp 1802) and died in Serskamp on September 29 1825.

Joanna Theresia and Bernardus were ancestors of my mother's father. For the link see : "September 29 1825".

Black Tuesday

From "Today in History" :

On October 29 1929, "Black Tuesday" descended upon the New York Stock Exchange. Prices collapsed amid panic selling and thousands of investors were wiped out as the Great Depression began.

See : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wall_Street_Crash_of_1929.

By the way, the resulting unemployment was much more severe than the financial losses of the speculators : as usual, innocent people paid for the horrendous debacle and millions upon millions of people suffered the consequences. The Great Depression was felt worldwide, but US unemployment, for instance, rose from 3 to 25 percent.

Many financial "specialists" and economists claim that such a catastrophy will never happen again. I agree : the next one will probably be even more catastrophic and severe : it will be a financial and social tsunami. And believe you me, the disequilibria which may cause that tsunami have been in place for years and years.

October 29 1876

On that day in Pamel the churchwardens ("kerkfabriek") decided to significantly raise the church tower and steeple. The tower appeared too low as compared to the high roofs of nave and transept. That decision was the beginning of the end for the location of the age old parish church near to the Dender river. The castle which stood close to the church had disappeared a long time before.

The tower was raised, but the foundations did not bear the additional weight for a long time.

On Sunday night, March 9 1879, the tower collapsed and part of the church roof disappeared in the fall. The collapse could be heard miles away.
A detailed and graphic description is to be found in "100 jaar Sint-Gaugericuskerk te Pamel (1903 - 2003)" by Herman Van Herreweghen en medewerkers.

It was decided not to repair the church - a new one was built in the middle of the fields some distance away and was the start of a new center for the village in a totally different location. Such a move has happened elsewhere, but it doesn't happen often.

The house of my great-grandfather Felix De Vidts stood close to the old church, but my grandmother Maria Antonia only knew the half collapsed building : she was born in 1885.

The old graveyard is all that remains of the old parish church, and the old center is now a very quiet neighborhood.

More t-shirt wisdom

... others call it management philosophy, strategy or tactics, depending on their understanding of the meaning of these words, which is often very bad indeed, especially in the business world.

Hierarchy

I've wanted to use this illustration for a long time, but I do not know who I have to give credit to.

October 27 1801

Carolina Van der Straeten was born ca 1753 in Ternat and died October 27 1801 in Pamel. She was married to Petrus Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1749 - 1793), the last "meisenier" in the line.

Their son Joannes Franciscus (Pamel 1784 - 1839) was the father of Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1811 - 1881), the husband of Maria Elisabeth Van der Sleyen (Pamel 1811 - 1860) and the father of my great-grandfather Felix and my great-great-grandmother Antonia. For the last post mentioning them, see "October 26 1691 (1) ".

October 27 1725

Joanna Vernaillen was born and baptized on that day in Okegem. She married Ferdinandus Van der Sleyen (Pamel 1724 - 1810) and died in Pamel on November 17 1791.

They had five children. The line from that couple to me has been described in "October 26 1691".

October 27 1672

On that date, Jan Broeckaert, who had been born ca 1586, died in Wetteren. He had married Joanna De Meyere (ca 1589 - Wetteren 1674).

Their son Joannes was born in 1628 and died in Wetteren in 1676.

There was a third Joannes (Wetteren 1653 - 1742), son of the second and the line from him to me has been described in "September 7 1653".

October 26 1784

Anna Asselman was born in Okegem ca 1690. She was a daughter of Joannes Asselman (Okegem ca 1663 - 1723) and Anna Van den Waterloop (Okegem 1662 - 1740). She died in Okegem on October 26 1784 and was buried the next day.

She married Joannes De Mol (Okegem 1699 - 1777). I need go no further because I just mentioned Joannes De Mol in "October 26 1691 (2) " - the previous post.

To the best of my knowledge, the name Van den Waterloop died out completely. I have no knowledge of any person bearing that name in Belgium at the present time. I'd like to stand corrected.

October 26 1691 (2)

On that day, Niclaas De Mol died in Okegem. His grandfather was sexton in Outer.
In 1666 Niclaas married Livina Vernaillen, a daughter of the sexton of Okegem. Like the Van der Sleyen's mentioned in the previous blog, they were poor and had to be assisted by the parish.

Their son Judocus (Okegem 1669 - 1735) also was dependent on assistance in those troubled times.

Judocus had a son, Joannes (Okegem 1699 -1777) who became a member of the parish council ("kerkfabriek") and who was the father of Joanna (Okegem 1733 - 1791). Joanna was the mother of Cornelius Van der Speeten (Okegem 1772 - 1806).

I have covered this territory before.

Alexandrina Van der Speeten (Okegem 1795 - 1831) was a daughter of Cornelius, and her daughter Catharina Asselman (Okegem 1823 - 1892) was the mother of my great-grandfather Hermilianus Neukermans, the fourth of her five children.

Catharina died when her grandson, my grandfather Joannes Franciscus Neukermans (Okegem 1886 - 1961) was about 6 years old.

October 26 1691 (1)

On that day Adrianus Van der Sleyen died in Pamel. With his first spouse, Joanna De Troyer ( + Pamel 1664) he had a son Judocus (Pamel 1652 - 1704). They were poor people in very difficult and harsh times, and they were assisted by the parish.

The family has lived in the Piezelstraat/Koestraat for centuries. Gasparus (Pamel 1686 - 1749), a son of Judocus, lived there too. Gasparus was the father of Ferdinandus (Pamel 1724 - 1810).

Ferdinandus had a son, Michael (Pamel 1758 - 1827) who married late, but had six children nevertheless. He was one of the people living in the Piezelstraat who were taken to court for grabbing some public land on the roadside. How many farmers have ploughed over public paths, even in our lifetime ?

His youngest child was Maria Elisabeth Van der Sleyen, my great-great-grandmother on my mother's side through her son Felix De Vidts and my great-great-great-grandmother on my father's side through her daughter Antonia De Vidts (see various earlier including "Strictly for fun", "August 27 1881", "July 22 1860", "Een oude foto en een mysterie opgelost").

Catholic driving

Not in the best of taste, but I couldn't resist it.

Shoot !

From "History today" :

On October 261881, the "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" took place in Tombstone, Arizona, as Wyatt Earp, his two brothers and "Doc" Holliday confronted Ike Clanton's gang. Three members of Clanton's group were killed; Earp's brothers and Holliday were wounded.

How many different versions have we seen on film ?

America, a nation built on may cornerstones : one of them indeniably is violence. It took me years to accept that insight, but there it is. I've lost my rosy glasses.

Risky and riskier (2)

The possibility of world war III erupting out in the open is growing by the day. Apparently I'm not the only one who thinks so.

The article in the following link, although clearly overstated for impact, scares me stiff - and I do not scare easily !

392 days left before the danger may start to subside.

One would almost wish for a catastrophical financial crash to take the mind of certain "reponsible authorities" off war games, or worse, for the time being.

Don't forget

Burma has the largest number of child soldiers in the world and the number is growing, Human Rights Watch said in an extensive new report released October 16. The overwhelming majority of Burma's child soldiers are found in the national army, which forcibly recruits children as young as 11, although armed opposition groups use child soldiers as well.

"Burma has a poor human rights record, but its record on child soldiers is the worst in the world," said Jo Becker, advocacy director of the Children's Rights Division at Human Rights Watch.

Recruiters for Burma's army frequently apprehend boys at train and bus stations, markets and other public places, threatening them with jail if they refuse to join the army. The boys are given no opportunity to contact their families, and are sent to camps where they undergo weapons training, are routinely beaten, and brutally punished if they try to escape. Human Rights Watch received several accounts of boys who were beaten to death after trying to run away.

October 25 1691

Petrina Van der Haegen was born in Denderhoutem on March 26 1625, where she died on October 25 1691. She married twice. With her first husband Steven Lievens, born in Denderhoutem in 1613, she had a son and a a daughter : Elisabeth Lievens, born in Denderhoutem in 1644.

Elisabeth had a son Gisbertus Wynant (Denderhoutem 1672 - 1743).

Gisbertus had a daughter Elisabeth Wynant (Denderhoutem 1698 - 1781). Elisabeth was the mother of Franciscus Goossens (Denderhoutem 1733 - 1778).

Franciscus had a daughter Maria Anna Goossens (Denderhoutem 1771 - 1852) who was the mother of my great-great-grandmother Coleta Vlaeminck (Denderhoutem 1813 - 1891), mentioned in the previous post.

October 24 1732

Goossens Joannes, who was born on February 7 1652 in Denderhoutem, died there. He married Maria Guns, born in the same locality in 1660.

Their son Egidius (Denderhoutem 1695 - 1762) was the father of Franciscus (Denderhoutem 1733 - 1778).

Egidius had a daughter Maria Anna (Denderhoutem 1774 - 1852) who was the mother of Coleta Vlaeminck (Denderhoutem 1813 - 1891). We just recently referred to Coleta, the mother of my great-grandmother Blondina Muylaert (Denderhoutem 1849 - Pamel 1942).

October 24 1670

Margaretha Van der Kelen, born in Pamel, died in Okegem on October 24 1670 and was buried two days later. She married Adrianus Straetman, born in Okegem in 1604.

Their son Niclaas, who died in Okegem in 1719, had six children with Catharina De Winne (Okegem 1661 - 1731). I descend from their daughters Anna Straetman (Okegem 1691 - 1759) and Joanna Straetman (Okegem 1697 - 1762).

Staatsprijs

October 23 1741

Joannes Baptist Vlaeminck was born in Melle on October 23 1741 and died in Massemen op May 15 1802. He married Petronella Jacoba Leus.

They had a son Paulus Franciscus Vlaeminck (Massemen 1773 - Aalst 1819). He was the father of Coleta Vlaeminck (who was born and died in Denderhoutem 1831 - 1891).

Coleta was the mother of my great-grandmother Blondina Muylaert (Denderhoutem 1849 - Pamel 1942).

October 23 1707

On that day, Petrus Van der Speeten died in Denderhoutem, where he had been born on March 27 1661. His second wife was Catharina De Brabander, who was born in Okegem and died in Denderhoutem in 1746.

They had a son Joannes (Denderhoutem 1702 - Okegem 1761). Joannes was the father of Petrus (Okegem 1733 - 1786) who had a son Cornelius (Okegem 1772 - 1806).

Cornelius had a daughter named Alexandra (Okegem 1795 - 1831), who was the mother of Catharina Asselman (Okegem 1823 - 1892). Catharina was the mother of my great-grandfather Hermilianus Neukermans. They have been named before in this blog.

Difficult

According to the CNA , the president of the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue, Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, warned this week of the difficulties posed by inter-religious dialogue with Muslims, since they “do not accept discussions about the Koran, because they say it was written under the dictates of God.”

In an interview with the French daily La Croix, Cardinal Tauran said that currently inter-religious dialogue can take place “with some religions, yes. But with Islam, not at this time. Muslims do not accept discussion about the Koran, because they say it was written under the dictates of God. With such an absolutist interpretation, it’s difficult to discuss the contents of the faith.”

Did I miss something somewhere ?

Staking

Public opinion

Public opinion : probably the most changing and fickle manifestation of human interest as manipulated by the media. Sometimes the media are like restless children, picking up a toy, losing interest, throwing it aside, picking up another toy to discard it minutes later.

What has happened to the indignation concerning Myanmar ?
Of course, there are dozens of critical points throughout the world, but still ... let's not forget that country and its people, oppressed by one of the most corrupt regimes in the world.

October 22 1656

Paschasius De Vidts, born ca 1595, died in Pamel. He was the son of Joannes De Vidts (Pamel ca 1560 - 1629) and Catharina Lauwerijs. He married Joanna De Beer (Pamel ca 1598 - 1673).

Their son Judocus De Vidts liced in Pamel from 1627 to 1694. The link has been described in "August 16 1635".

Compliment

Since I write my blog the frequent urge to write letters to the newspapers has fallen to almost zero.

But last week I felt an irresistible need to correct a factual error concerning the Belgian railraods in one of the paper's fora (readers' corner). So I corrected the error (pregnant women do travel first class without paying a supplement) but could not resist to answer a question on the forum concerning the railraod itself. So I wrote that the company will have to try to do better for punctuality, customer care and communications.

A furious answer came : my mail was outrageous and I was completely full of bitterness.

"Verzuring" in Flemish is one of the worst terms of abuse that politically correct people can use for those who do not agree with them. It means you are completely out of touch and do not know how to behave as a civilised person. Now, as a contrarian, I consider that a compliment.

I think I have some experience in the matter : I have been a daily, and very often frustrated, customer of the railroad for over twenty years, until I could take it no longer and switched to travel by car (a bad solution, but no worse than the train ... at least at that moment in time).

There was a second little squirmish between my correspondent and myself but it brought nothing new to the argument, his point being that in many other countries railroad service really stinks, so we should be happy with what we have. Yeah.

Honger

Vlaamse ministers laten hun kabinetten scherper controleren.

October 21 1732

Judocus De Doncker died in Pamel. He had been the first husband of Anna Van der Meeren (born ca 1687 - died in Pamel in 1782).

Their daughter Josina De Doncker (Pamel 1727 - 1799) had a natural son Judocus De Doncker (Pamel 1755 - 1835). His daughter Anna Catharina De Doncker (Pamel 1791 - Okegem 1865) married Adrianus Neukermans (Okegem 1788 - 1860).

They were the parents of my great-great-grandfather Amandus Neukermans (Okegem 1824 - 1857).

October 20 1838

On that day, Joanna Catharine Van de Perre was born in Okegem as the fifth of seven children and the third daughter of Joannes Van de Perre (Okegem 1801 - 1875) and Maria Elisabeth Borremans (Strijtem ca 1798 - Okegem 1866).

In 1858, Joanna Catherina married Karel Bernardus Broeckaert (Wetteren 1832 - Okegem 1928). They had twelve children, including my great-great-grandmother Clementina (Clementia) Broeckaert (Okegem 1858 - 1939). She was their eldest child.

Clementia herself had five children with Amandus Neukermans (Okegem 1824 - 1857) and my great-grandfather Hermilianus Neukermans (Okegem 1855 - 1932) was their fourth child.

October 19 1645

Antonius Jespers sr died in Pamel. His son Georgius (+ Pamel 1681) had a daughter Elisabeth (Pamel 1656 - 1719) who was the mother of Petronella Stockmans (Pamel 1698 - 1768).

Petronella was the mother of Joanna Maria Janssens (Pamel 1729 - 1790) whom we met before in "October 13 1775" and "October 12 1729".

Varia

Slinkende erfenis Verhofstadt II laat ruziënde erfgenamen achter.
Slinkende of stinkende ?

Dijken verstevigd ? Zoals die in New Orleans ?

Genetic ancestry tests

I've been tempted too - genetic ancestry testing has become kind of a hype recently. And scientists say it may be just that and nothing more.

See : http://www.physorg.com/news111936186.html and
http://www.livescience.com/health/071018-vanity-tests.html.

So, I'll see where the ball is rolling and save the dough I might have 'invested' in the test.

Disney

From a blog called "Creative Minority Report" (October 16) : Disney cuts God.

Disney has demanded that the mention of God be removed from all advertisements for the upcoming animated feature "The Ten Commandments."

October 18 1715

On that day Christina Gansemans died in Okegem. She had been married to Adrianus Van de Perre who died in 1693.

Their son Laurentius (Okegem 1673 - 1730) was the father of Joannes (Okegem 1706 - 1762).

I descend from his daughter Catharina Van de Perre (Okegem 1735 - 1812) and from his son Joannes Antonius Van de Perre (Okegem 1740 - 1712). The two lines have been described before in "September 15 1655 ".

My dear Watson

James Watson, co-Nobel prize1962 for the discovery of the structure of the DNA molecule, claims that Africans are less intelligent than Europeans. He did not offer any proof.

This is not the first "blooper" of this "enfant terrible" : according to my source, he has been known to plead for genetic manipulation so that all females would be born beautiful. He also pleaded for genetic screening and manipulation to cure stupidity. His ?

Generally I like people who make a stand against political correctness. Is Watson a contrarian ?

This looks more like professional idiocy to me, but then I never won a Nobel prize.

Biography : http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/medicine/laureates/1962/watson-bio.html.

Risky and riskier

According to the International Herald Tribune :

president George W. Bush said on Wednesday that he thought Russia still wanted to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. But stepping up his own rhetoric, the president warned that for Tehran to possess such a weapon raised the risk of a "World War III."

Iran is a danger indeed, but there are other, more significant dangers. Who would start the war - indeed may be planning it already - do you think ?

In my view, that man, who should be the world's knight in shining armor, has lost all credibility indeed - if he ever had any. Maybe someone should remind him of the mote and the beam (Matthew 7:3) ?

World day

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated every year on October 17 throughout the world. It was officially recognised by the United Nations in 1992, but the first commemoration of the event took place in Paris, France in 1987 (from Wikipedia).

Almost every day is a "World day" nowadays. This should be one of the most important. But what happens ? Talk, talk, talk .... another exemple of political correctness.

When I studied economics in the early sixties, most enlightened minds stated that 0.7 % of GDP should be spent on development aid. More than fourty years later, we still haven't attained that goal. Shame on all of us !!!

The World Day for the Eradication of Poverty is almost as relevant and useful as World Wear Old Socks Day on March 27.
.
I found it after I had written my text. The meeting of great minds, what ? Ahum.

Photoshop

A photograph taken of a bonfire in Poland bears an uncanny resemblance to the late Pope John Paul II. The picture is months old but has just recently been published by the VIS.

The bonfire, which was lit at a ceremony in Poland on April 2 to mark the second anniversary of the late pontiffs death, appears to be an image of the Holy Father with his right hand raised in blessing.

Deails of the "apparition" recently appeared on the Vatican TV's News Service, and fr Jarek Cielecki, a close friend of John Paul II, said he was convinced the picture showed the former pontiff. The pictures were broadcast on Italian TV and also posted on religious websites, some of which crashed as thousands logged on to see the image.

As a true contrarian, I shall not publish the image. How gullible and naive can people get ?

The enjoyable part lies in the commentaries :
-- "You can see the image of a person in the flames and I think it is the servant of God, Pope John Paul II"
-- "Can you say Photoshop ?"
-- "Apparition" Claims to Show "Saint" JPII in Hell (the wet dream of ultra-traditional "catholics" in the US)
-- "Looks more like a classic case of pareidolia to me".

iF you want to see the pictures :

Brave new schools ?

I found the following link on a "traditional catholic" website in the USA. These websites often appear to be driven by pure and unadulterated hate - against society and against the roman catholic church - and oftentimes do not represent much more than the opinion of their author. It is not as if they represented a significant minority of anything. A quick perusal of the website of the state of California did not bring any confirmation.
.
But the "information" is so stunning that I cannot pass it by.
.
According to the title of the article, 'Mom' and 'Dad' are banished by California as governor Schwarzenegger signs a law outlawing terms perceived as negative to 'gays'.

"Mom and Dad" as well as "husband and wife" effectively have been banned from California schools under a bill signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who with his signature also ordered public schools to allow boys to use girls restrooms and locker rooms, and vice versa, if they choose. "
"We are shocked and appalled that the governor has blatantly attacked traditional family values in California," said Karen England, executive director of Capitol Resource Institute.
"With this decision, Gov. Schwarzenegger has told parents that their values are irrelevant. Many parents will have no choice but to pull their children out of the public schools that have now become sexualized indoctrination centers."
.
.
I sincerely hope this is baloney, but, if this is true, one question remains : have they completely lost their mind over there ?

Oranje

Serpula lacrymans

Well done, Laurette !

I, for one, thought you were a lot smarter than most of your colleagues. So I was wrong.

That most certainly is not the way to solve our problems !

And yeah, I know, the prospective of opposition time must hurt you very deeply. But I, for one, thought you were a lot smarter indeed.

Your devoted "mérule".

Beter bestuur

http://www.standaard.be/Kanaal/Index.aspx?kanaalId=144.

I'm not going to write what this post was all about. We still need foreign investment after all.

This was a post on the dire situation of farmers all over the world - one of the "benefits" of the free market dogma and of corporate greed.

Klantvriendelijkheid

Ik zoek een nieuwe ijskast. Mijn vertrouwde buurtwinkel is jaren geleden verdwenen en is nu omgetoverd in een bankfiliaal. Typisch.

Ignorance

A nice title for post 300 on this blog, don't you think ?

I found the following verses on the blog "The roving medievalist". I never saw or heard them before, but I immediately liked them. Internet told me they are by J.R.R. Tolkien, who, except for the title "The Lord of the Rings" is and was a total stranger to me.

Here we go :

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.
-
The poem apparently appears twice in the The Lord of the Ring's first book, The Fellowship of the Ring. I'm not touched to the point of running to the bookstore straight away.

That happens by the way - I am severely tempted to make a dash to the store to go and buy Naomi Klein's new book "The Shock Doctrine (The Rise of Disaster Capitalism)". She has a wonderfully bright, if somewhat one sided mind, the kind of mind that I like. The high priests of capitalism and of the doctrine of free market are extremely one sided too !!

But I'm wandering off. Back to Tolkien's lines. Not what I would call great poetry, but their author must have been a contrarian. Good man !

Pablo is nijdig

A bon entendeur, salut...

October 14 1913

Birthday of my sainted father. He was born in Meerbeke as the second child and the first son of Pieter Jozef Timmermans (Meerbeke 1886 - 1953) and Rosalia Margaretha Ravijst (Meerbeke 1892 - 1973). Like his father he died way too young. He passed away on April 20 1980, after a life of total and utter dedication to his wife and three children. He has had a very rough and difficult path, and when things might have become easier, he was called away.

He was a wonderful father and my very best friend, and I feel really privileged that I can write this down, knowing it is the full and perfect truth.
And I deeply regret that only the first of his five grandchildren has some significant memories of him. They would have adored him if they had been given the opportunity to known him in person.
See also various older posts including "My closest family" and "My father".

Bucolic

I like good food arrosed with good wine, as well as good walking, and often try to combine both.

Today, I did just that. With some younger family members and their kids we visited the hamlet of Buitenland (meaning land outside the dyke, which is no longer true) on the Scheldt river, near Temse. Temse is a little town where the last bridge spans the river before it flows to Antwerp and to the North Sea. We had an outstandingly beautiful Autumn day with thousands of different colors in a bucolic landscape under a brilliant sun. (The picture was not taken today).

We had chosen a local "child friendly" eating place. It looked not especially clean, the service was too fast at first and then petered out to almost unexistant.
The hors d'oeuvre was tasteful. The (small) steaks tasted flat and the sauces were freshly made but very "drippy" and watery indeed. Second helpings of (overcooked) french fries came when everybody had finished eating but we finished them off anyway.
The bill was an unpleasant surprise - I am used to much better food and better service for that kind of 'investment'.
I'm not going to publish the name of the place : there are not that many restaurants in that "lost" but paradisiacal corner of Flanders.

But the walk on and along the dykes of the Scheldt was heavenly - I could have continued for miles and miles had it not been for my company.

There are some very beautiful houses in Buitenland ; apparently the people living there have some money. But there is the continuing threat of the Scheldt. The last great drama was about 50 years ago : in the night of January 31 to February 1 1953 there were multiple breaks in the dykes, and the whole region was flooded for a couple of months. Nothing like the dramas in the Netherlands at that moment in time; but bad enough anyway.

By the way, fifty years ago, each little place in Belgium had a series of pubs. Now the pubs are few and far between, and there has been an explosion of restaurants. If only each of those restaurants had one or two persons capable of cooking a decent meal, but unfortunately, that is not always the case. And the restaurants where you can get decent or gastronomical food are so taken in with themselves that one sometimes has the impression that serving clients is just as much as they can bear. And I have seen far worse - unimaginable rudeness to long standing customers.

Buitenland also means land beyond the borders, i.e. all foreign countries. So, when you go to Buitenland, you can claim that you have been abroad.

Buitenland : 9 out of 10.
Restaurant : 4 out of 10 (and I'm being magnanimous).

October 13 1775

One more link to Maria Elisabeth Van der Sleyen (last one see : "October 12 1729").

Agustinus (sometimes Constantinus) Van Eeckhoudt died in Pamel where he had been the first husband of Joanna Maria Janssens (Pamel 1729 - 1790). Contrary to what I wrote previously - without checking - he was born in Gooik, not in Pamel, on April 12 1727.

The roving medievalist

I just discovered this site amidst the latest updates on Blogger.

Intrigued by the title, I went and had a look. I liked what I saw - for the pictures of course.

http://favoritescapegoat.blogspot.com/

October 12 1757

In Okegem, De Leeuw Catharina died on that day. She was married to Egidius Vernaillen (Denderleeuw 1691 - Okegem 1759).

Their daughter Joanna Vernaillen (Okegem 1725 - 1791) was the mother of Michael Van der Sleyen (Pamel 1758 - 1827), who, in his turn, was the father of Maria Elisabeth Van der Sleyen. I just mentioned Maria Elisabeth in the previous post.

October 12 1729

On that day, Joanna Maria Janssens was born in Pamel where she died on April 29 1790. Her first husband was Augustinus Van Eeckhoudt (Pamel 1727 - 1775) with whom she had seven children, including Petronella Van Eeckhoudt (Pamel 1771 - 1828).

Petronella's daughter Maria Elisabeth Van der Sleyen (Pamel 1811 - 1860) was the mother of my great grandfather Felix De Vidts, and her daughter Antonia De Vidts was the great grandmother of my father. This link has been described many times before.

The families Van der Sleyen and Van Eeckhoudt were neighbors in lower Pamel (the old center of the village). Apparently, my mother was not aware of her distant family link with the Van Eeckhoudt's : in the fourth generation, it is not uncommon that the link gets lost from memory.

"Rond Wetstraat cirkelen adviseurs"

Gebakken lucht verkoopt meestal goed. Vraag het maar aan consulenten en politici.

En, als afsluiter :

"Rijkman" (what's in a name ?)

October 11 1929

My great-grandfather Josephus (Jef) Timmermans died in Meerbeke. He had been born in Meerbeke on December 8 1858 and married Maria Elisabeth Goessens (Nederhasselt 1862 - Meerbeke 1934) in Nederhasselt on January 24 1883. The couple lived on various locations in Nederhasselt and in Meerbeke. Their last address was the Schalkom farm, a small vestige of an important farm which had been the property of the Abbey of Ninove until the French revolution. According to official sources, he was an agricultural laborer("dagloner"), later a farmer. He probably was the first Timmermans on the Schalkom farm.

I never really asked my father - who passed away more than 20 years before I had the time to really start digging in my ancestry - for a complete list of his uncles and aunts. My mother always mentioned that my grandfather was one of 11 children. I found thirteen, but I still have a lot of work to do to clear this out.

I have written before that, on my mother's side, I was fortunate enough to be able to question her extensively, and to dispose of lots of reliable published sources (Okegem, Pamel, Denderhoutem ...). My father passed away much too soon for me to ask him lots of specific questions about his ancestors, and - to the best of my knowledge - there are no published sources for Meerbeke which could facilitate my family reconstructions. Except for surviving, but fading memories of a very few family members, I have to dig it all out of the archives.

Belgometer

Belgians are special people. The petition to save solidarity crawls ahead at a snail's pace ; last time I looked they got 63.761 signatures since September 27. I can't say I'm not disappointed. It's not exactly a tsunami of support !

And today (I think) De Standaard launched a Belgometer. A rather naive list of 20 questions to see whether one is a "separatist" or a "unionist". Last time I looked 42.000 people had taken the test. Me too, and I was terribly disappointed when I came out 78 % unitarist. Fortunately my second try came out 89 % - which suits me better, and believe you me, I have not been forcing the dose.

De Standaard states very clearly that the test has no scientific value whatsoever ; to pretend otherwise would be ridiculous. But you can be d*** sure that it will spread the results all over the paper, most certainly if the results suit their own ideas. Now that is not a nice thing to write, so let's wait and see ...

I repeat the address of the solidarity petition : http://www.reddesolidariteit.be/. Get off your lazy butt, and do something !

For the belgometer : http://www.standaard.be/messagent/messagent.aspx?ID=1z13pXxh1919. But don't take it too seriously.

January 20 2009

From October 10 2007 to January 20 2009 : 468 more days. It looks like an eternity, but it will pass, hopefully without too much new stupidities and absurdities or fresh bloodshed. "Ander en beter", as we say in flemish.

The present situation is not good - the understatement of the year ? - but unfortunately, some time after January 20 2009, and if I'm still around, I may regret that I ever wrote this short comment.

Improbable ? Yes, ... but entirely possible nevertheless.

Goor

Bad joke

This is a free automatic translation of the post "Juist ja" - the wonders of internet ...

Just yes Out De Standard from today:

"Fraud internet bankers remains limits" How as? Had you expected someone else errand?

Do "victory feeling and in spite of by Fortis after success bid" "Much bitter tears" come perhaps later on... for how many mergers succeed marriage? And many employer of the former ASLK do not feels self still "Fortis". But automatic translation still has a long way to go, hasn't it ?

October 8 1759

Birthday of Maria Josina Covens, who died in Pamel on April 12 1827. She was the mother of Maria Elisabeth Van Lierde (Pamel 1770 - 1738).

Maria Elisabeth was the mother of Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1811 - 1881) - all of them have been mentioned before.

Maria Josina came from a long line of farmers ("pachters") in western Brabant (Lippelo, Malderen, Bogaarden, Pamel ...) and the family also gave mayors to Okegem in the nineteenth century.

"Fraude internetbankieren blijft beperkt"
Hoe zo ?

"Veel bittere tranen" komen misschien later ... want hoeveel fusies lukken echt ? (EG ? Laat me lachten).

A guy capable of saying the words that follow is worthy of my blog. Think about them. Think hard about them.

Ethics ??? But then we're writing about the oil industry, aren't we ?

October 7 1676

On that dat Maria Van der Kelen died in Pamel, where she had been born on February 15 1625.
She married Judocus De Vidts, a meisenier (Pamel 1627 - 1694). Maria has been mentioned before - see "September 8 1676".

Their son Petrus, meisenier, lived in Pamel from 1655 to 1726. Petrus had a son, Judocus, meisenier (Pamel 1703 - 1750). Petrus Joannes, son of Judocus and the last meisenier in the line, lived in Pamel from 1749 to 1793.

The line has been described before :

Joannes Franciscus (Pamel 1784 - 1839), son of Petrus Joannes, was the father of Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1811 - 1881).

Joannes was the father of Felix and Antonia, whom I have mentioned a couple of posts ago.

Just for fun, once more

Again, from the Pipenpoy's now to Paola Ruffo de Calabria, queen of the Belgians.

Similar exercises can be made for princess Mathilde and for her husband. Just to show that (almost) everyone has - sometimes - close or - mostly - distant relationships to so called "famous" people.

I start again with Jan Pipenpoy + 1615
I
Zeger Pipenpoy + 1658

Maria Pipenpoy 1618 - 1693

Arnoldus 't Kint 1654 - 1714

Once more, these data come from Linda's genealogy on Geneanet : http://gw.geneanet.org/index.php3?b=lindav&lang=nl .

Thus, if I go back twelve generations to Jan Pipenpoy (+ 1615) I have in him a common ancestor with queen Paola. That is not as uncommon as it looks, but some people base their whole research on this kind of links. An extreme exemple is http://worldroots.com/brigitte/ngroups.htm.

Many people who start on their genealogy do so in the secret hope of finding lots of "nobility" amongst their ancestors, as if those were special or better persons. Many do find them, many others don't, not because the link has not existed, but because the documentation is not there any more. Personally, I don't care for or about historical nobility, as I don't care for or about our present ruling classes. I do not see what made or makes them so special. They are not of a special type or race : I have never seen their blood run blue ... Maar ieder zijn zin !!

October 6 1775

On that day, Joanna Maria Renneboog died in Denderhoutem. She had been born in Aaigem on Juli 16 1705. Up to now, she is the first known person in the only all female line in my ancestry. (I haven't looked up her ancestors yet).

She has been reported on in "July 16 1705".

Russian mafia

The Russian mafia is helping itself to Belgian bank accounts. Internet security appears to be kind of a joke.

A duke, for Pete's sake ...

Yep, terrible for a contrarian isn't it ? And the further one goes back, the more horrors one discovers in one's family tree.

But I am lucky : good duke Jan was a contrarian too. He should never have been the duke of Brabant to start with (he was called upon to replace his mentally disturbed older brother). He extended his duchy and was a good administrator and the object of many a legend. He liked hunting and tournaments (he died in one) ; he was an amateur of beer - see the horn in his hand and the big pot at his side - and he wrote poetry and songs, some of which have survived to the present time.
.

Strictly for fun

A colleague genealogist sent me the following line (thank you, Linda).

I'm sure that some of my family members, knowing nothing about the numbers op persons involved in distant genealogy, will take this infomation much more seriously than I do.

An American joke

A good wind blew the following highly interesting link my way.

For all you Bush-lovers out there : the US have discovered a new instrument of international politics, called diplomacy.

Highly recommended ! Please take the time to open and read !

Onbegrip

Big Mac

More Americans know the big mac ingredients than the ten commandments.

"Quick. Name each of the Ten Commandments. OK. Now name the ingredients in a Big Mac hamburger sold at McDonald's.

According to a new survey, the Big Mac wins the memory contest. ...

The vast majority of those surveyed could easily name the primary ingredients in a Big Mac: two all-beef patties (80 percent), lettuce (76 percent), sesame-seed bun (75 percent), special sauce (66 percent), pickles (62 percent) and cheese (60 percent).

By comparison, "You shall not kill" was known to fewer than six in 10 respondents. Less than half (45 percent) could recall the commandment to "Honor your father and mother."

Even those who said they go to church at least once a week had trouble naming all of the commandments."

New age

Fifty years ago, on October 4 1957, the space age - and the space race - began as the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite, into orbit.

October 4 1638

On that day, Jan Covens died at Lippelo. He married Heglwize Van Neyen.

His son Henricus, born ca 1617 became tenant ("pachter") of the Groenhof in Malderen.

Henricus' son was another Henricus. He was born in Malderen in 1660 and died in Pamel in 1739 where he was the farmer ("pachter") of hof te Berchem. He became a meisenier in 1695.

His son Carolus was born in Malderen before 1699 and died in Pamel in 1770. He became a meisenier in 1712 and married Barbara Galmaert (born in Gooik 1720, died in Aalst) whom we met before - see "September 18 1671", "September 5 1623" and "August 15 1698".

I nevertheless shall repeat the rest of the line : the daughter of Carolus and Barbara, Maria Josina Covens (Pamel 1759 - 1827) married a miller, Joannes Josephus Van Lierde (Pamel 1746 - 1811).

Her daughter Maria Elisabeth Van Lierde (Pamel 1790 - 1838) was the mother of Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1811 - 1881), my great-great- grandfather on my mothers side and my great-great-great- grandfather on my fathers side.

St Francis of Assisi

In 1226, Saint Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan order, died on October 3 ; he was canonized in 1228. Although not my favorite saint - too many legends alltogether - he probably was one of the most important key figures in the history of christianity, working at a time when the church was corrupt, power drunk and generally falling to pieces.

Also the patron saint of a countless number of my ancestors. And I remember a very naive picture of St Francis preaching to the birds, hanging over the headboard of my grandfather's bed. Cis (Franciscus) Neukermans was his name. In my youthfull innocence, I thought it was St Anthony. I kind of got lost amidst all those saints.

Nero 60 jaar

October 3 1855

That was the birthday of Hermilianus Neukermans, my great-grandfather, my mother's paternal grandfather. What I know about him, my mother told me - see "De kloefkapper".

Although the family had lived in the same spot for some time (maybe even for two centuries), Hermilianus probably built the house he died in. My grandfather told me that the previous house (a wood and clay structure) burned to the ground in the late 19th century.

Hermilianus and his wife Clementina Broeckaert (Okegem 1858 - 1939) were married on April 19 1882. They had ten children. In most of the cases, I have "modernized" their Latin birth names. Except where stated otherwise they all lived and died in Okegem, and except for Bernard they all had offspring.

** Bernard Karel "Naren" (1883 - 1921) - a soldier in the first world war who died - years later - of the consequences of a gas attack ;
** Jozef Karel "Jef" (1884 - 1936) who lived in Denderleeuw ;
**Joannes Franciscus "Cis" (1886 - 1961), my grandfather (I never saw a document calling him Jan Frans) ;
** Karel Lodewijk "Lowie" (1889 - 1965) ;
** Maria Rosalia "Maria" (1891 - 1971) ;
** Blondine (1893 - 1962) who lived in Vilvoorde ;
** Joannes Amadeaus"Wentj" (1895 - 1976), who fought in the first world war (as a volunteer, I think) ;
** Maurice Jozef "Moris" (1898 - 1960) who lived in Pamel - he became an invalid but I do not remember more ;
** Aimé (1901 - 1979) who lived in Anderlecht ;
** Omer (1903 - 1992) who lived in Ninove.

Except for Naren and Jef, I knew them all.

To the best of my knowledge, at the present moment, very few of their offspring live in Okegem : I know only about one male descendant.

Hermilianus passed away on September 7 1932.

September 29 1825

Venneman Joanna Theresia died in Serskamp on that day. She had been born in Schelderode on October 30 1763 and married Bernardus Broeckaert (Wetteren 1758 - Serskamp 1802) in Schelderode in 1785.

Their son Eugenius lived in Serskamp from 1792 to 1846 and was the father of my great-great-grandfather Karel Bernard Broeckaert (Wetteren 1832 - Okegem 1928). See "September 7 1653".

A riddle

In October 732 - now almost 1275 years ago - the Muslim invasion of Europe was stopped by Charles Martel in the battle of Tours - Poitiers in France. Without this victory, the history of Europe would have been totally different.

See : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Tours.

In September 1683 the Polish king Jan III Sobieski finally defeated the Turks who had laid siege to Vienna, Austria in their quest to conquer Europe.

See : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Vienna.

In both events, the role of the catholic church had been predominant.

In our days, the Muslim "invasion" of Europe is peaceful but not less dangerous to our present society and culture. The church has almost evaporated and whatever remains of it is no longer interested in "worldly" pursuits.

Who will stop the "invasion" now ? As we say in Flemish : "Derde keer, goede keer" ?

Europe has colonized the greater part of the world from the 16th century on. Now it may be Europe's turn to be colonized. Suffice to compare the respective birth rates of the various population groups. The possible consequences of this evolution are staggering and mind-boggling. European imperialism defeated for ever ?

No civilisation lives forever.

September 26 1647

On that day, Adrianus Vernaillen, sexton and schoolmaster, died in Okegem, where he had been baptized on November 8 1605. About a month before his death he became "buitenpoorter" of Geraardsbergen. He was married to Barbara Taelman and had problems with his brother Judocus and the bayliff concerning his functions (see "July 10 1663").

We met Barbara before in the post "September 23 1630".

The line from Cornelia Vernaillen, the daughter of Adrianus and Barbara, to myself has been described in that post and others.

Ontwaakt, verworpenen ...

But "be that as it may", dat is niet eens het onderwerp van deze post.

... Suckers !!

Wake up !!!!

My apologies to my English speaking readers. I was too impatient (and too furious) to take the time to translate this post. The gist of it is that God has been replaced by the Mammon of free market economy and profit, and that people aren't even aware of it.
