Alle hoop is nog niet verloren. Hier en daar worden stilaan toch enkele groepen mensen wakker.

"Europese Kerken vrezen dat de maatregelen van de Europese Unie en haar lidstaten slechts de symptomen bestrijden en dus onvoldoende zijn om de huidige economische crisis te overwinnen. Dat schrijft de Conferentie van Europese Kerken (CEK) in een open brief aan de voorzitter van het Europese parlement, de Europese Raad en de Europese Commissie. De brief is het resultaat van een drie dagen durend overleg van Europese kerkleiders, dat de voorbije dagen in Brussel en Mechelen plaatsvond.

'Wij zijn ervan overtuigd dat de huidige crisis veel ingrijpender is, dan de analyse van de Europese instellingen wil laten geloven. Deze crisis stelt enkele vanzelfsprekendheden in vraag, die de basis vormden voor het economische beleid van de laatste decennia, zoals de deregularisering, het overheersende karakter van de economie in alle levensdomeinen en het overdreven benadrukken van winst en groei.' De Europese Kerken vragen in hun brief ook aandacht voor de ethische dimensie van de crisis. Dat moet ons aansporen tot een bezinning over onze levensstijl die te vaak gericht is op winst, consumptie en hebzucht, ten koste van het algemeen welzijn en de toekomst van volkeren en onze wereld. "

En de nefaste gevolgen van de globalisering die grotendeels gebouwd is op verkeerde, ja zelfs vervalste premissen in verband met transportkosten én loonkosten ? Zijn ze die vergeten ?

Maar alla, alle begin is moeilijk. Een pluim voor de dames en heren die deze tekst hebben opgesteld.

Copy, copy ...

Genealogy stands or falls with the careful and detailed analysis of primary sources. When one uses secondary sources one has to check back and verify with the primary sources. That is the overriding principle which a large majority of amateurs ignore.

At this moment in time my own ancestry chart comprises about 6000 individuals. That is not as impressive as it sounds, because there are lots of doubles : very often one cannot define exactly which one out of - for instance - five Joannes Timmermans, who lived in a given village at a given time, was a witness to a marriage, or a godfather.

But that's not the point. The point is that the part of primary research in my database is very limited : maybe 250 persons at the very most. Fortunately, I have been blessed with very reliable secondary sources and family (household) reconstructions which have been made by professional archivists, historians and dedicated amateurs. But even these people make mistakes, and typographical errors remain in the best of sources.

And these sources are copied, and copied ... and copied ... A short look at Geneanet and other websites proves the point.

But there are so many other uncontrollable and uncontrolled sources on various genealogical sites, including Geneanet. No sources or provenance are given ; still the data are dutifully copied by other genealogy hunters. The other day, a very reputable genealogist once more made the point in a Yahoo group.

And he wrote something which struck home. One could completely invent and publish a fictional genealogy (I must say that in my worst moments I have been tempted to try just that - fortunately, I never did) and one could be sure that within a short timespan that genealogy would be copied in scores of other genealogies on the web.

By the way, even in the Ancien Regime, upstarts who tried to get a title, or minor nobilty wanting to get ahead in the world, have been known to falsify their ancestry in order to "prove" that they descended from the most "noble" of families.

Primary sources are essential, but who can spare the time and the effort to read score upon score of registers written in bad church latin, in an almost illegible old script and published on completely used, scratched or faded microfilm ?

Caveat emptor, or something like that.

Sale

Philippe Bodson, one of the Belgian top managers said that the acquisition of Fortis Bank by BNP Paribas was an excellent deal. I think few people would disagree.

He once more regretted that successive Belgian governments did nothing to avoid or to stop the "clearance" sales of Belgium's top companies to foreign groups. He adds that Belgium lost all its top companies and he lists Tractebel, Petrofina and Fortis. Why does no one ever mention CBR in these lists ? This group had built a prominent - and profitable - position in its world markets : none of the other mentioned companies could equal that position in their own markets.

By the way, there is one other highly respected and frequently consulted "top" manager who played a more or less prominent role in the sale of all of these "jewels" of the Belgian economy.

I sincerely hope that history will do him more justice than his present peers, although he himself may think he has no peers because he is so exceptionally brilliant.

Imago

In een analyse van het slechte imago van België in het buitenland en de regionale aanpak van dat probleem slaat Mevr. Doornaert eens te meer spijkers met koppen. Ze heeft het over de verspilling van belastingsgelden in totaal overbodige en inefficiënte opzetten om de regio's te promoten. Een voorbeeld : het geldverslindende Flaamse huis in New York.

Welke boodschap krijgen buitenlandse investeerders wanneer hun deur platgelopen wordt door minstens drie vertegenwoordigers van een land dat maar een speldenkop groot is ? Wie is arrogant en gek genoeg om te denken "dat de buitenwereld zich moet aanpassen aan onze ondoorzichtige structuren" ?

Ik wil jullie het einde niet onthouden : "Het is onbegrijpelijk hoe lichtzinnig en arrogant zovele Vlamingen de meerwaarde, die België is, over de haag willen gooien. Daar bestaat in het Engels een spreekwoord voor : cut off your nose to spite your face".

Gelezen in de krant van vandaag : "De jaarlijkse 'V-day'(Bevrijdingsdag) is de herdenking van 8 mei 1945. Die dag heeft zich officieel overgeven, en werd in Berlijn de wapenstilstand ondertekend."

Lest we forget

Today we commemorate that victory in Europe (VE Day) was celebrated on May 8, 1945. On that day the World War II allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of nazi Germany. This meant the final end of Adolf Hitler's infamous third Reich.

On April 30th, Hitler committed suicide during the battle for Berlin, and the surrender of Germany was authorized by his replacement, president of Germany Karl Dönitz. The surrender was signed on May 7 in Reims, France and on May 8 in Berlin.

Let's not forget the millions upon millions of innocent people who were massacred and slaughtered by the criminal madness of one sick mind. Let's not forget the ease with which that crapulous monster conquered the minds of the German and Austrian peoples.

Let's not forget the sacrifice of the allied soldiers or resistants of all nations who gave their life or health for our freedom. Without their sacrifice, we might still be cowering under the nazi heel in a thoroughly barbarian Europe.

And let's not kid ourselves : it could happen again. Religious and economic-financial fundamentalism and crude nationalism are real dangers to our most cherished freedoms. And overzealous political correctness just might be one of the avenues leading to the victory of fundamentalism over reason. That would be a nasty surprise wouldn't it ?

Let's hope we never have to repeat the infamous German phrase : "Wir haben es nicht gewusst".

Melkkoe

Hoe verkeerd het nog zit met de mentaliteit in de overheidsdiensten bewijst volgend bericht.

Er zitten, pardon, werken te weinig allochtonen en gehandicapten bij de Vlaamse overheid.

Een emancipatie-ambtenaar (de naam alleen al !) heeft de oplossing gevonden. "Leidinggevenden moeten veel meer afgerekend worden op de inspanningen die ze doen om kansengroepen aan te werven."

En dan komt het : "Waarom geen financieel beloningssysteem uitwerken voor wie goede resultaten kan voorleggen ? Hogere budgetten voor hun entiteit, bijvoorbeeld."

Een eenmalige premie ? Misschien. Maar worden ambtenaren niet vergoed om hun job correct in te vullen ? Maar hogere budgetten ??? Ik dacht dat budgetten bepaald worden in functie van behoeften, en niet van "verdiensten". En we weten allen hoe moeilijk het is een eenmaal verkregen budget terug te schroeven.

Maar ja, alles kan opgelost worden met centen, en zeker met overheidsgeld. De overheid als melkkoe zit diep in onze genen gebrand. Wij zijn er ons blijkbaar nog altijd niet voldoende van bewust dat we dat allemaal zelf moeten betalen.

Geloftes

Mijn krant weet dat er in Melle tussen de meerderheidspartijen en de oppositie grote onenigheid heerst over een maandelijkse huisvestingsvergoeding van duizend euro voor de pastoor.

Terecht of onterecht, ik weet het niet en, eerlijk gezegd, het zal mij worst wezen.

Wat ik even wou aanstippen is dat een lid van de raad volgende bedenking had bij de hoogte van het bedrag. "Wat rest er nog van de gelofte van armoede", grapte hij.

Een ietwat zure grap : men kan natuurlijk van een "links" lid niet verwachten dat hij weet dat een gewone, bij manier van spreken "doordeweekse" pastoor nooit een belofte van armoede aflegt. Dat is voorbehouden aan sommige "merken" van paters en van nonnen.

Geen dank, graag gedaan.

Polarisatie

Een Franstalige stem over een recente, communautair getinte, enquete.

"België lijkt op communautair vlak echter steeds vaker een omgekeerd consensusmodel: de bevolking blijkt veel gematigder dan haar elites. Dat de door die laatste opgewekte polarisatie nog niet écht overslaat op de bevolking mag een wonder heten. Misschien is het omdat, zoals gisteren uit onderzoek bleek, het vertrouwen van 'de Belg' in de politieke partijen nog nooit zo laag was. Al kan dat ook een gevolg zijn van die louter politieke polarisatie. Alleszins waren er geen significante verschillen in vertrouwen tussen Vlamingen en Franstaligen te melden."

Smoke and mirrors

Dat België zichzelf in het buitenland slecht verkoopt is een waarheid als een koe. Maar sommige remedies zijn erger dan de ziekte zelf. Mijn kwaliteitskrant spendeert royaal twee bladzijden aan het probleem en mogelijke oplossingen, want blijkbaar is alles een kwestie van marketing.

Daarbij worden weer de onvermijdelijke lijstjes bovengehaald (de lijstjes staan blijkbaar alleen in de krant, niet op de website). Dat in een van deze lijstjes België op de 152ste plaats prijkt na (vanaf nr 145) Mauretanië, Algerije, Liberia, Eritrea, Roemenië, Zuid Ossetië en Libië zegt meer over de producenten van dat lijstje dan over ons land. Dat een "gat" als Ghana op de negende plaats prijkt is te gek voor woorden. Komen die lijstjesmakers ooit uit hun ivoren toren ? Ik schreef het al en herhaal het nog eens : garbage in, garbage out.

Deze onzin werd gepleegd in "East West Global Index 200" door een organisatie die zichzelf zeer bescheiden "A thought leader in nation branding" noemt.

De publiciteitsgeile dame heeft nog maar eens haar doel bereikt : op een zeer goedkope manier staat ze weer uitgebreid in de media.

Dat ze het nodig vindt in nonnenkap en met schijfjes ongedesemd brood als extra de cover van haar (waarschijnlijk slecht lopend) magazine op te smukken getuigt meer van slechte smaak dan van creativiteit en is inderdaad een brug te ver.

Dat een kwaliteitskrant het nodig vindt daar een ganse bladzijde "Analyse" aan te besteden is ronduit belachelijk. Hoewel het artikel lichte ironie uitstraalt, speelt het volop in de kaart van die "wereldberoemde" ambassadrice van alles en nog wat die van zichzelf zegt : "Ik ben trouwens de laatste die durft te zeggen dat ze niet gelovig is".

Waar komt dan die ziekelijke drang vandaan om de kerk te blijven provoceren en belachelijk te maken ?

Maar wie maakt ze eigenlijk belachelijk ? De kerk of zichzelf ?

Arm schepsel.

Statistische lulkoek

In een artikel over vrachtwagens en verkeersongelukken in mijn krant staat dat de veelgehoorde opmerking dat de buitenlands vrachtchauffeurs onze wegen onveilig maken niet blijkt te kloppen. In de ondertitel staat zelfs bondig "Buitenlanders : mythe".

De "bewijsvoering" : "Van de 151 ongevallen waarbij doden vielen waren er 120 vrachtwagens met een Belgische nummerplaat betrokken." De buitenlandse vrachtwagens zijn dus betrokken in 21 % van het aantal ongevallen met dodelijke slachtoffers.

Statistisch zijn die cijfers zo goed als zinloos. Ze kunnen maar betekenis krijgen wanneer ze vergeleken worden met het aandeel : door buitenlandse vrachtwagens in ons land afgelegd aantal kilometers / het totaal in ons land afgelegde aantal vrachtwagenkilometers.

Alleen indien dat aandeel significatief hoger ligt dan 21 % is de ondertitel van de krant correct.

Forecasts

Exactly one year ago, the brilliant minds of the EC made a GDP forecast for 2009 : they expected 1.8 % growth. Now the expect minus 4.5 % (both numbers are for the whole of the EC).

I wouldn't have cared to show my face in the street for a couple of weeks if I had made a forecasting error of that magnitude.

But to the great minds in Brussels, that "smallish" difference is probably no more than "l'épaisseur du trait" as we used to say in forecasting cycles, although, in my days, pencils had much finer points. But then it was up and up and up again ; all was for the best in the best of worlds and trees grew straight into heaven.

And, to be honest, at this time last year, few were the observers who expected a crash of the magnitude we just lived through. Let me rephrase that : we are living through.

Moreover, let's not forget that this is early May : the final numbers may be much worse indeed !

By the way, let's not forget that the man who now plans to save Europe from the crisis - although Europe doesn't know it yet - bears a very heavy responsibility for the structural deterioration of the Belgian economy. He failed to act when there was sufficient leeway and when he could have created a much healthier base for the future.

Veiligheid en gerechtigheid

Uit De Standaard : "Bus De Lijn beschoten uit wraak" en andere artikels blijkt dat er zowat een stille oorlog woedt tussen De Lijn en bepaalde elementen van de Brusselse jeugd.

In verband met het laatste schietincident lees ik : "De jongeren hadden voor vernietiging en illegale wapendracht aangehouden kunnen worden. Maar de magistraat besliste hen te laten gaan omdat het louter materiële schade betrof en ze bekentenissen hebben afgelegd. Ook hebben de twee geen gerechtelijk verleden."

Ga hier aub niet meer achter zoeken, zoals mogelijks vrees voor uitgebreide relletjes ...

Indien ik morgen "wraak" zou willen nemen op sommige politieke elementen of op een of andere instelling die mij niet bevalt, en indien ik hier en daar een paar ruiten zou ingooien, zou ik dan ook op dezelfde clementie mogen rekenen ?

Thank God

Seen on Coffee Klatch :

A man has been lost and walking in the desert for about five days. One hot day–actually, they’re all hot–he comes to the home of a preacher. Tired and weak, he crawls up to the house and collapses on the doorstep. The preacher takes him in and nurses him back to health. Feeling better, the man asks the preacher for directions to the nearest town. The preacher tells him the directions, and offers to lend him his horse to make it. The preacher says, “However, there is a special thing about this horse. You have to say ‘Thank God’ to make it go and ‘Amen’ to make it stop.”

Anxious to get to town, the man says, “Sure, okay” and gets on the horse. He says, “Thank God” and sho ’nuff, the horse starts walking. A bit later he says louder, “Thank God, thank God,” and the horse starts trotting. Feeling really brave, the man say, “Thank God! Thank God! THANK GOD!” and the horse is soon up to a full run!

About then he realizes he’s heading for a huge cliff and yells “Whoa!” But the horse doesn’t even slow! It’s coming up REAL QUICK and he’s doing everything he can to make the horse stop. “Whoa, stop, hold on!” Finally he remembers “AMEN!!!”

Pardaens

My ancestor Judocus Pardaens (Paridaens) lived in Pamel from March 1 1627 to March 10 1693. He married Catharina Wijns (Weyns ?), sometimes called Mertens. Catharina died in Pamel on December 9 1697.

They are reported to have had seven children :

their eldest child, Petrus, lived in Pamel from September 15 1655 to November 29 1728. He married Catharina Van Opdenbosch in 1678 and Gerardina Clement in 1695. Petrus and Gerardina are ancestors of mine.

The youngest child, Maria, also survived (Pamel 1671 - 1747) and married.

The other children died young :

-- Catharina was born in 1657 and died eleven years later from the plague.

-- Joanna was born in 1660 and died nine years later from the plague, some seven months after Catharina.

-- There was another Catharina. It was quite common that two children in one household had the same christian name, but generally the second child only got that name when it was born after the first one had died. According to our source, the second Catharina was born in 1663 - while the first one was still alive. The second Catharina is reported to have died in 1668 ; no cause of death was given. She died four months before the first one ... Has there been some confusion about dates and was there only one Catharina in the household ; or was one of them a daughter of another couple alltogether? In those days of pestilence, such an error could be made quite easily ...

-- And then there were twins, born late in February 1670. Leonardus lived for just over a week ; Egidius died two days later. In those days, the outlook for the survival of twins was grim.

Good old times, indeed ...

Stemrecht, geen stemplicht !

In deze aanloop naar de verkiezingen van 7 juni wordt het uiterst moeilijk geen bijtende commentaar te geven op onze politieke hogepriesters, stamhoofden en kermisattracties. Nee, ik meen het, sommige van die heerschappen hebben zelfs moeite het niveau van een kermisattractie te evenaren, terwijl ze van zichzelf denken dat ze de onmisbare redders van het vaderland zijn. Soms lijkt de keuze van een bril of een haartooi belangrijker dan het "programma".

Daarenboven denken de meesten van die schare "geroepenen" dat de kiezers onnozele tisten zijn die alles vergeten wat hun gezegd en beloofd wordt, of wat hen aangedaan werd. En soms hebben ze nog gelijk ook. Meerdere van die "dames en heren" bezitten dan ook de kunst om zich om de zoveel jaar bijna onherkenbaar te vervellen - en, ik kan de pointe niet laten - ons te vervelen.

Ik vind het schandalig dat stemplicht nog altijd bestaat. Stemrecht is een heilig recht, stemplicht is een aberatie. Ik ga in geen geval stemmen op 7 juni : ik heb een geldige reden om mijn "plicht te verzuimen" en ben daar blij om. Moedig is anders, maar alla ...

Ik ben er ten andere van overtuigd dat, wie er ook gekozen wordt, hij of zij zijn (haar) best zal doen om de zaken verder in de soep te helpen draaien. Ja, natuurlijk zijn er uitzonderingen, en natuurlijk zijn die uitzondereringen verspreid over bijna alle "partijen". Spijtig genoeg is hun invloed bijna nihil, want zij verdedigen waarden en principes, die eigenlijk, in het politiek correcte Flaanderen, zelfs niet meer aan bod mogen komen.

"Doe de stemtest" in De Standaard is een mooi voorbeeld. 36 vragen over regeltjes ; geen enkele over waarden : waarden werden wetens en willens uitgesloten, want we weten allen dat waarden subjectief en onbelangrijk zijn.

En neen, ik denk niet noodzakelijk aan "confessionele" partijen. Mochten sommige linkse partijen hun waarden niet vergeten zijn, ze zouden nooit in hun huidige moeras verzonken zijn. Dat is tenminste mijn overtuiging.

Alla, ik heb mijn venijn weer eens gespoten. Hopelijk kan ik mij nu van verdere commentaar onthouden over dit zielig circus.

La pensée du retraité

Ma femme me dit: "Que penses-tu faire aujourd'hui ?"

Je lui réponds: "Rien."

Elle me dit: "C'est cela que tu as fait hier."

Je lui dis: "Oui, mais je n'avais pas fini."

Eigenlijk is dat een overload aan informatie. "Regering knoeit" had volstaan.

Van de(n) Waterloop

Amongst my ancestors I have a Van de(n) Waterloop family which lived (mainly) in Okegem and also in Pamel.

To the best of my knowledge, this family name no longer exists in Belgium.

In the genealogical records I have seen, one finds the name in the XVIIth and XVIIIth century, and then it disappears. There cannot have been too many branches in the family. Maybe there were too many girls and too many unmarried sons ?

Still, thousands upon thousands of people may descend from that family, just as I do.

Research on Geneanet indicates that the name was known (almost) exclusively in the immediate surroundings of Okegem and in parts of the Nord - Pas de Calais in Northern France, but there it was mostly Waterloop (without Van de).

I do not have the time to try to find the descendancy of the few family heads with that name, but if anyone, anyone at all, does know more about it, I would be pleased to hear about it on etpatim@yahoo.com.
