September 2 1944

At approximately 9h30' on September 2 1944, the first US soldiers entered Belgium in Rumes. Rumes is situated on the French border to the South-West of Tournai.

12 US soldiers were killed during the first day of the liberation of Belgium. But the end of the four year long bloody nightmare was near. Brussels was liberated by British troops on September 3.

Exactly one year later, on September 2 1945, the capitulation of Japan was signed on board the battle ship Missouri, in Tokyo Bay.
