Colins in May

I have indicated before that I am related to the Colins, a family of minor gentry, at least in the branch I descend from. As most of my information on them comes from a couple of specific, and not necessarily fully reliable sources (see the post : De Ro), I have made a special file for this family, which means they are not included in the overviews I use to feed my blog.

Let me just give the events for the month of May (I "modernised" some of the family names) :

---- on May 3 1567 Anna van Gavere, lady of Lieferinge, died in Thielen. She was the spouse of Philip van Leefdaal, knight, lord of Waalwijk, Thielen, Etten, Meeuwen etc, who lived from ca 1490 to 1568. (I just erased part of my information on him in my file - I shall have to reconstruct it).

Five generations later we find Jacqueline van Leefdaal, lady of Lieferinge. She converted to catholicism (the family was protestant) and married the "very catholic" Pierre Colins, lord of Heetvelde and Thy (Brussels 1661 - Oetingen 1723). Jacqueline died in 1721. If my data are correct Pierre was about 42 when they married. According to my quite "shaky" data, Jacqueline was a lot younger.

They had seven children, including the notorious Philippe Pierre Jacques Colins, who died in 1777 and is buried in the church in Lieferinge (see the post "August 11 1777"). He was the grandfather of Anna Maria (de) Colins (Lieferinge 1780 - 1839), the maternal grandmother of my great-grandfather Josephus Timmermans (Meerbeke 1858 - 1929).

---- Jean Colins, born in 1530, died on May 7 1605. He was lord of ter Meeren, and a loyal captain of the city guard of Enghien (loyal to Philip II of Spain that is). He married Jeanne Huysmans and they had five children at least. Jean is buried in the beguinage of Enghien, and the text of his epitaph has been conserved.

I descend from two of their children :

** Charles Colins, lord of ter Meeren and Leembossche (?) who died in 1637 : the forementioned Philippe Pierre Jacques is the fifth generation after Jean,

** Josse Colins, lord of Bouchaute ; the forementioned Philippe Pierre Jacques is the fourth generation after Jean.

For the Colins : also see the posts : "December 31 1723", "July 11 1839" ...

Brrr

Brrrr ! Dat zou pas een ramp zijn !

Nieuws ?

-- "Slachtoffers van Gellingen nog steeds in de kou" : vier jaar na datum, het zoveelste bewijs van goed beleid ;

-- "Hitler krijgt wassen beeld in Madame Tussauds in Berlijn" : het heeft lang geduurd, maar eindelijk durven ze toch : de revival is overal in Duitsland zichtbaar - kijk maar eens naar de TV ;

-- "Flanders Today lijkt op Pravda" : ik had niets anders verwacht van onze schoolmeesters cum opgestoken vingertje - euh ik bedoel ministers ; jullie wel ?

-- "Banken smeren hun klanten bewust foute beleggingen aan" : wanneer de energieboeren, de verzekeringen, de informaticabedrijven, Telenet en Belgacom, enz enz enz ons mogen pluimen, waarom de banken dan niet ? En ze hebben zo veel meer ervaring dan alle andere sectoren samen ;

-- "Een roker met longkanker heeft geen recht op terugbetaling voor zijn verzorging. Dat vinden drie op de tien artsen" : idioten en beroepsidioten vindt je overal ; in sommige "vrije" beroepen misschien wat meer dan elders ...

-- "Nederlandse Al Capone’s troeft Gordon Ramsay af met duurste pizza" : Ramsay, een arrogante, onbeschofte, omhooggewaaide zak, nog een van die beroepsidioten. En wie denkt dat ik overdrijf moet maar eens naar het taalbegruik van die f** luisteren in een van de reality TV programmas die aan hem "gewijd" zijn.

May 30 1762

Joanna Straetman, born in Okegem on March 9 1697, passed away on May 30 1762. In 1726 she had married Joannes Van der Speeten (Denderhoutem 1702 - Okegem 1761).

They had five children. Petrus Van der Speeten (Okegem 1733 - 1786) was number three. In 1757 he married Joanna De Mol (Okegem 1733 - 1791).

Petrus and Joanna had nine children. Cornelius (1772 - 1806) was number eight. In 1795 he married Alexandrina De Schepper (Okegem 1775 - 1853) with whom he had six children. After his death Alexandrina married Petrus Judocus Neukermans (Okegem 1772 - 1812) of the second Neukermans branch in Okegem. With him she had another 3 children.

Alexandrina Van der Speeten (Okegem 1795 - 1831) was the oldest of the nine children of Alexandrina De Schepper. In 1818 she married Andreas Asselman (Okegem 1795 - 1875). They had five children of which Catherina Asselman (Okegem 1823 - 1892) was the third. Andreas remarried after Alexandrina's death but had no more children.

Catharina Asselman married Amandus Neukermans (Okegem 1824 - 1857). They had five children. My great-grandfather Hermilianus Neukermans (Okegem 1855 - 1932) was number four and their first son.

May 30 1727

Josina (= Judoca) De Doncker was born in Pamel, a daughter to Judocus De Doncker who died there in 1732 and to Anna Van der Meeren, born ca 1687 and who died in Pamel in 1782. Anna remarried after the death of Judocus and lived a very long life - she died at the age of approximately 95, more than double the life expectancy at that time. She had six children with Judocus and two with her second husband.

Josina had a natural son, Judocus De Doncker (Pamel 1755 - 1835). Josina married in 1768, but her husband, of which she was the second spouse and with whom she had another child, was not the father of Judocus. Josina died in Pamel on September 13 1799.

Judocus was the second husband of Anna Maria De Ridder (St Kwintens Lennik 1752 - Pamel 1833). Anna Maria had six children with her first husband and three with Judocus.

Their daughter Anna Catharina De Doncker (Pamel 1791 - 1865) married Adrianus Neukermans (Okegem 1788 - 1860).

As stated before, through their son Amandus (Okegem 1824 - 1857) they were the paternal grandparents of my maternal great-grandfather Hermilianus Neukermans (Okegem 1855 - 1932).

Judocus Van der Sleyen was born in Pamel, probably in the Gootjesstraat. He was a son of Adrianus Van der Sleyen who died in Pamel in 1691 and of Joanna De Troyer, deceased in Pamel in 1664.

In 1681 Judocus married Emerentia De Vleeshouwer. They had three children and lived in het Schuit in the Piezelstraat. Judocus died on December 23 1704 ; Emerentia followed in 1707.

Their second child was Gasparus Van der Sleyen (Pamel 1686 - 1749). He married Catharina Huylenbroeck (Pamel ca 1615 - 1751) : they had 8 children.

May 30 1639

Pieter Grijseels died in Denderhoutem. In 1593 he had married Cornelia Walckiers, who died in Denderhoutem in 1639. Petrina, the second of their five children, was born in Denderhoutem in 1594.

Kleinzielig

Kleinzielige na-stamperij !

A reminder ...

May 29 1453

On that day, a Tuesday, Constantinople, the Byzantine Empire's capital fell to the forces of the Ottoman Empire.

The event marked the end of the political independence of the millennium - old Byzantine Empire.

The fall of Constantinople accelerated the scholarly exodus of Byzantine Greeks which caused the influx of classical Greek studies into the European Renaissance.

In addition, it played a crucial role in Ottoman political stability and its subsequent expansion in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans.

The date of the event is one of the frequently proposed events marking the end of the Middle Ages as a historical period.

(A nice, politically correct description, based on Wikipedia.)

May 29

Birthday of (one of) the last male Neukermans in Okegem, or how a frequent family name in a given location can disappear in a couple of generations.

My maternal grandparents had four grandsons and three granddaughters : two of the grandsons bear the name Neukermans and both of them had female offspring only ; the offspring of my grandfather's brothers are spread all over, but none remain in Okegem.
And the offspring of my great-grandfather's only brother is not to be found in Okegem either.

Fortunately, in the female lines, many descendants remain, but the family name Neukermans will probably disappear from Okegem.

Never mind. Such is life, and I am not a male chauvinist pig - at least, I hope I am not.

Happy birthday, Guy !

What next ?

First century : birth of christianity ;
sixth century : birth of islam ;
eleventh century : great schism ;
sixteenth century : birth of protestantism ;
twenty-first century : ???

Do you believe in statistical regularity or in cycles ? That is almost a religious question in itself !

May 29 1725 and 1799

Catharina Suzanna Van Tricht was born in Pamel on May 29 1725 and died there on her birthday in 1799. She married Nicolaes Sterckx (Pamel 1714 - 1803) and they had eight children.

Prijzen

Just play it

Anna Van der Heyden passed away in Denderhoutem. She was the spouse of Joannes Lievens who died in Denderhoutem in 1693.

They had five children. I descend from Livina Lievens (Denderhoutem 1675 - 1742).

Anna Van Stalle died in Impegem. She was married to Laurentius De Leeuw who died in Impegem in 1640. Both were buried in Okegem (Impegem depended from the Okegem parish).

They had nine children : Guillelmus (ca 1610 - 1677) married Judoca Van de Waterloop in Okegem in 1639.

They had three children : Laurentius De Leeuw (Impegem ca 1644 - 1728) was an ancestor of mine.

The remainder of the line is to be found in the post "November 26 1700". See also "November 7 1640".

Deception 2

Found in : http://grieboskireport.blogspot.com.

Criticism of President George W. Bush is nothing new, even from folks inside the administration.

But the new tell-all memoir of former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan is particularly damaging.

According to McClellan, President Bush relied on an aggressive "political propaganda campaign" instead of the truth to sell the Iraq war, and that the decision to invade pushed Bush's presidency "terribly off course." The Bush White House made "a decision to turn away from candor and honesty when those qualities were most needed" — a time when the nation was on the brink of war, McClellan writes in the book entitled "What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception."

The way Bush managed the Iraq issue "almost guaranteed that the use of force would become the only feasible option." "In the permanent campaign era, it was all about manipulating sources of public opinion to the president's advantage," McClellan writes.

Stone

The notorious Sharon Stone is facing a ban on the showing of her films in China after suggesting the recent earthquake that killed up to 67,000 people may have been the result of "bad karma" over the country's occupation of Tibet.

What has that lovely lady in her head ? A stone ?

May 28 1663

Anna Sneppe was born in Ste Katharina Lombeek. According to one source, she may have been a daughter to Anthoon who died in 1668 and to Catharina De Raeymaecker, but I have reasons to doubt that.

Anna married Guillelmus Van Overstraeten (St Kwintens Lennik 1659 - Ste Katharina Lombeek 1731) and they had a daughter Elisabeth Van Overstraeten (Ste Katharina Lombeek 1692 - Pamel 1741). She married three times.

In 1713 she married Adrianus De Vidts (Pamel 1688 - 1724) with whom she had six children. In 1725 she married Maximiliaen Van Cauwelaert (born in Onze Lieve Vrouw Lombeek and who died in Pamel in 1741) with whom she had another six children.

Their daughter Catharina Theresia Van Cauwelaert (Pamel 1729 - 1805) first married Judocus De Vidts (Pamel 1703 - 1750) with whom she had two children. Then she married Joannes Josephus Kestens with whom she had thirteen children.

I descend from Catharina's oldest child Petrus Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1749 - 1793) who had ten children wit Carolina Van der Straeten (Ternat ca 1753 - Pamel 1801). This couple lived and died in the Piezelstraat.

Their sixth child was Joannes Franciscus (Pamel 1784 - 18369) who married Maria Elisabeth Van Lierde (Pamel 1790 - 1838). They had eight children.

As stated oftentimes before, Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1811 - 1881), my maternal great-great-grandfather and my paternal great-great-great-grandfather, was their second child.

Piloot

Zie : http://www.standaard.be/Meningen/Commentaar/.

Provocatie of welgemeende belangstelling ?

Deception

An interesting view on the US economy :

"The most worrisome thing about the vulnerability of the U.S. economy circa 2008 is the extent of official understatement and misstatement— the preference for minimizing how many problems there are and how interconnected they are."

Zie : http://www.standaard.be/Artikel/Detail.aspx?artikelId=3R1SB3OJ&word=reynebeau.

Historisch-vergelijkende ethiek is altijd zeer delicaat."

Political and correct

-- The (in)famous but highly intelligent Yabou Jahjah of AEL fame is rumored to have had an unfair politically inspired trial regarding his role in a manifestation in Antwerp in 2002. The sentence included a one year prison term. The case now lies before the court of appeal and Mr Jahjah shall not be satisfied with anything less than a resounding not guilty.
The man had left Belgium, for the Lebanon I think, but came back specifically for his appeal. If politically inspired trials are rumored to be possible, how about a politically correct one ? I for one, prefer to continue to believe that justice is blind, as it should be. Well, we'll see ...

-- Police in Anderlecht is expecting renewed guerilla between allochtone youths and football hooligans on Wednesday or on Friday. One wonders why ? It is not as if the participating scum on both sides needs to wait for half a free day or for the free week-end. Many of them are too young to work ; the others never did a day's honest work in their miserable lives.
There has been a lot of political talk and indignation but I suppose that the political discussion of really efficient measures will have to wait until there are some victims ? One wonders whether the right to break and destroy is of a higher order than the right for protection of the innocent shopkeepers and other inhabitants of the "war zone" ?

Congo

For the umptieth time since independence in 1960, the 'neo-colonial' ?? Belgian government has problems with the Congo and its leaders.

I do not understand why - while there is so much misery in the world, and so few resources available for development and help (as opposed to weapons) - we continue to focus on Congo where our "leaders" are treated as imbeciles and dirt. Is it out of guilt, or are the potential rewards so enormous ?

There has been a crisis council of the "kernkabinet" about the Congolese problem which has taken center stage overnight and there is even talk of sending the prime minister over there to pour oil on the waves.

How fortunately that he is available for travel all over the globe and does not have any more urgent problems to address, problems which by the way are much more threatening and potentially lethal for the future of Belgium.

If we continue along the present road, we shall not have to worry about our Belgian consulates in Lubumbasi and Bukavu : there will be no Belgium left to have consulates there.

May 26 1660

Adrianus Van Tricht, later farmer and publican, was born in Pamel, a son of Judocus (Pamel 1627 - 1678) and Gerarda Lambeen (Burst 1629 - Pamel ?). In 1680 he married Elisabeth Sterckx, inn keeper (Pamel 1658 - 1714).

They had ten children. Adrianus farmed Withuis, the central farm on the Kwinkeleer, and was a meisenier and a relatively well to do man : he employed a maid and a servant.

I descend from their child number eight, Carolus (Pamel 1696 - 1775) who took over the farm with one of his brothers in law and to all practical purposes ran it into the ground. Times were extremely hard then. Carolus married Jozina Van Londerzele (born ca 1694 - Pamel 1772) in Liedekerke in 1723. They had eight children. It appears probable that Carolus and Jozina didn't die on their farm - they probably already had been forced to move.

Their eldest daughter Catharina Susanna Van Tricht (Pamel 1725 - 1799) married Nicolaes Sterckx (Pamel 1714 - 1703) ; and their eldest daughter Elisabeth Sterckx (Pamel 1754 - Okegem 1799) married Josephus called Judocus Neukermans (Okegem 1736 - 1814), residing on the Rattenberg (now Leopoldstraat) in Okegem, where Neukermansen have lived from the 18th to the 20th century.

The shroud

Others are suckers for pseudo-historic novels such as the Da Vinci Code. For a very long time, I have been a sucker for news about the shroud of Turin. And the fact that, some 20 years ago, carbon dating "proved" beyond reasonable doubt that it was a medieval fake was enough to set me - a full blooded contrarian - doubting the value of some "scientific" proofs.

There are dozens of websites and hundreds of opinions on the shroud and I think it has something in common with genealogy. Research will never be complete. Even now, there are new angles all the time.

Whether the shroud is "real" or not is not relevant any more and will most probably never be definitively proved or disproved anyhow. The quest has become more interesting than the object.

Now there is another rebound : "A physics professor has persuaded an Oxford laboratory to revisit the question of the age of the Shroud of Turin, the reputed burial shroud of Jesus Christ. The professor argues that carbon monoxide contaminating the shroud could have distorted its radiocarbon dating results by more than 1,000 years.

In 1988 and 1989 scientists at three laboratories drew on the results of radiocarbon dating to conclude that the shroud was a medieval forgery. They dated its creation to between 1260 and 1390 AD.

The Denver Post reports that John Jackson, a physics lecturer at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, has hypothesized that even minimal contamination of the shroud by environmental carbon monoxide could have skewed the dating by 1,300 years."

Rotten news

I had planned my summer around a trip to British Columbia and the Rockies come July. I was really looking forward to it ; the planning looked almost as if the trip had been taylored according to my very own wishes and specifications. And I haven't been to Canada for some twenty years and never had the opportunity to visit the Rockies.

Today I received a letter from the travel organisation telling me that the trip is cancelled because of a lack of participants - there was no indication as to the minimum number of participants needed. Frankly, the news comes a bit on the late side - there will not be a lot of other opportunities left. And they guarantee departure for most of their other so-called cultural trips, but Canada has gone under !

Another lesson learnt. Smallish organisations, however sympathetic and really customer friendly, should not take up this kind of project.

I must confess I'm not too happy about events. This is a fair warning for those of you who might frequent me in the next couple of days.

Nummertje

Apple rules

Three employees, one from Microsoft, one from Sun, and one from Apple are in a restroom, at the urinals.

When the Microsoft employee is done, he washes his hands and dries them completely with ten paper towels. “At Microsoft,” he says, “we’re very thorough.”

The Sun employee finishes, washes his hands, and dries them with one paper towel. “At Sun, we’re very thorough and very efficient.”

The Apple engineer leaves without washing his hands, and says : “At Apple, we don’t piss on our hands.”

Goofing up

"Hillary Rodham Clinton invoked the June 1968 assassination of Robert F. Kennedy Friday to defend her decision to remain in the race until June 3 - sparking a wave of condemnation by Barack Obama's supporters.
Clinton quickly expressed regrets over the unprompted reference to the slain New York senator, interpreted by many in Obama's camp as a suggestion she thinks his life might be endangered."

See : http://www.newsday.com/services/newspaper/printedition/saturday/nation/ny-usclin245700685may24,0,6433806.story.

Not her smartest move ever, but I kind of understand what she was saying. America being America, I wouldn't feel too safe in Obama's shoes.

I most sincerely hope nothing untoward happens but I most certainly wouldn't dare betting my life on it. Violence is a deeply embedded part of American society. Sometimes, in my darker moments I even think it is a driving force in American life ...

Cheeezzze

A German professor (of course, who else) warns hat a forced smile - the so called toothpaste smile extensively used by sales personel, politicians and flight attendants - can harm health. It can lead to severe stress and high blood pressure.

I knew it ! I knew it ! I'm glad to hear it confirmed !

See : http://www.nieuwsblad.be/Article/Detail.aspx?articleID=T61SBIAF.

I systematically refuse to smile when I have my picture taken : what, for pete's sake, is there to smile about on that occasion ?

A smile can be a thing of ravishing beauty, but most people with forced smiles look like idiots.

Anderlecht

Just you wait and see : de nodige opgekropte woede en wraakgevoelens zijn ruimschoots voorhanden.

Chicken

WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD?

BARACK OBAMA :
The chicken crossed the road because it was time for a change ! The chicken wanted change !

JOHN McCAIN :
My friends, that chicken crossed the road because he recognized the need to engage in cooperation and dialogue with all the chickens on the other side of the road.

HILLARY CLINTON :
When I was first lady, I personally helped that little chicken to cross the road. This experience makes me uniquely qualified to ensure- right from day one ! - that every chicken in this country gets the chance it deserves to cross the road. But then, this really isn't about me, although I clearly remember having to dodge enemy fire as Chelsea and I tried to cross the road.

GEORGE W. BUSH :
We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road, or not. The chicken is either against us, or for us. There is no middle ground here.

COLIN POWELL :
Now to the left of the screen, you can clearly see the satellite image of the chicken crossing the road ...

DICK CHENEY :
Where's my gun ?

JOHN KERRY :
Although I voted to let the chicken cross the road, I am now against it! It was the wrong road to cross, and I was misled about the chicken's intentions. I am not for it now, and will remain against it.

BILL CLINTON :
I did not cross the road with 'that' chicken. What is your definition of chicken?

AL GORE :
I invented the chicken !

PAT BUCHANAN :
To steal the job of a decent, hardworking American.

DR PHIL :
The problem we have here is that this chicken won't realize that he must first deal with the problem on 'this' side of the road before it goes after the problem on the other side' of the road. What we need to do is help him realize how stupid he's acting by not taking on his 'current' problems before adding 'new' problems.

OPRAH :
Well, I understand that the chicken is having problems, which is why he wants to cross this road so bad. So instead of having the chicken learn from his mistakes and take falls, which is a part of life, I'm going to give this chicken a car so that he can just drive across the road and not live his life like the rest of the chickens.

MARTHA STEWART :
No one called me to warn me which way that chicken was going. I had a standing order at the Farmer's Market to sell my eggs when the price dropped to a certain level. No little bird gave me any insider information.

BILL GATES :
I have just released eChicken2007, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your check book. Internet Explorer is an integral part of the Chicken. This new platform is much more stable and will never cra...#@&&^(C% reboot.

GRANDPA :
In my day we didn't ask why the chicken crossed the road. Somebody told us the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough.

With thanks to the (unknown) author(s). These funnies - and others - are to be found in various places on the web.
I could invent some with our Belgian heroes, but that would be too easy, and I am way too lazy. And I think they are not worth the effort !

Einde

Zie : http://www.kerknet.be/actua/nieuws_detail.php?nieuwsID=79858.

Olympic games

A heavy load has fallen off our chests. Our Belgian minister of foreign affairs has spoken, and when he speaks the whole world listens in respectful attention.

After his multiple visits in China he has declared that it would be "an erroneous option" not to attend the opening ceremony of the olympic games in Beijing.

The Chinese will heave a sigh of relief !

I myself thought that the games were about sports, not about politics, but even a contrarian can be naïve ...

Wellnews

Moeten we daar iets achter zoeken ?

Vlaamse Belg

Zie : http://www.standaard.be/Artikel/Detail.aspx?artikelId=I41S8DTF.

Jacobus De Vidts

For Pamel, my main sources - by far - are the two volumes of the "Gezinsreconstructie" by Rita Van Isveldt. I have stated before that, without these volumes, and without the work on Okegem by Herman Van Isterdael, my family tree would be nothing more than a very small sapling and a weak sapling at that. Even now, I haven't used all the information available in these volumes. I owe both the authors an everlasting debt of gratitude !

But even after these gigantic undertakings, small mysteries and inconsistencies remain, probably never to be solved.

The date given for the death (or burial) of Jacobus De Vidts in the previous post is not absolutely certain. Mrs Van Isveldt indicates that it may have been the burial date of another Jacobus De Vidts.

And then, for the children of Jacobus and Maaiken :

-- for Petrus De Vidts, there is no birth date. He married twice and died of the pest in 1668 ;
-- Maria De Vidts was born on December 19 1622 and died three moths later on March 20 1623 ;
-- Joannes De Vidts was born on September 2 1623, not fully nine months after his sister, and died ca 1623. His may have been a premature birth ;
-- but then another Joannes De Vidts was born six months later, on March 20 1624, with a different set of godparents. Nothing more is known about him ; he may have died young, or he may have married and died elsewhere. Most probably a mistaken note by the priest ;

Then the pace slows down :

-- Francisca De Vidts was born on May 19 1630, married and died in 1668, maybe from the pest like her brother Petrus ;
-- Martinus De Vidts was born op April 29 1637, and that's all we know about him, except that a Martinus De Vidts died in 1693 - possibly the same guy.

All this shows how hellishly difficult these family reconstructions can be. The parish registers were not always complete ; the parish priests were not infallible even when their writing was legible, which more often than not wasn't the case either.

May 22 1679

Jacobus De Vidts, born in Pamel ca 1590 very probably died in Pamel Kriebrug on that day. He was married to Maria Appelmans (Pamel ca 1590 - 1658).

See the post "February 12 1658".

Een trein stelen

Zie : http://www.hln.be/hln/nl/957/Belgie/article/detail/285234/2008/05/22/Twee-mannen-proberen-trein-met-nieuwe-wagens-te-stelen.dhtml.

May 21 1715

Franciscus De Dier died in Denderhoutem. He was the husband of Maria Meganck (Denderhoutem 1666 - 1734) and they had 10 children.

See the posts : "January 25 1734" and "November 17 1666".

Morocco and Belgium

Apparently, Morocco does a better job of protecting us against possible terrorist attacks than our own police and government.

See : http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/05/19/africa/AF-GEN-Morocco-Terrorism.php.

On the one side, a Belgian official said that authorities were not aware of the threat. On the other side, various sources claim that this group was the reason why there was a terrorism alert around Christmas time.

May 25 1928

Petrus Josephus Goessens, 92 years old, died in Nederhasselt on his wife's birthday, but Virginia Meganck had preceeded him in death by 11 years. (Nederhasselt 1834 - 1917).

Petrus Josephus had been born in Nederhasselt on January 24 1836.

See the previous post.

May 20 1834

Virginia Meganck was born in Nederhasselt, a daughter to (Joannes ?) Franciscus Meganck (Aspelare 1799 - Nederhasselt 1869) and to Regina (Victoria ?) Menschaert (Geraardsbergen 1792 - Nederhasselt 1859).

When Virginia married Petrus Josephus Goessens (Nederhasselt 1836 - 1928) in 1871, they already had three children. In total, they had seven children.

Their oldest child, Maria Elisabeth Goessens, was born in Brussels in 1862, married in Nederhasselt in 1883, and died in Meerbeke in 1934.

Maria Elisabeth and her husband Josephus Timmermans (Meerbeke 1858 - 1929) were my great-grandparents.

See also the posts : "May 4 1861", "March 22 1859" and "March 8 1862".

I still have some checking to do for the first names of Virginia's parents, and for their dates of birth. (Joannes ?) Franciscus was a miller's son (and a miller himself ?) and Regina (Victoria ?) was the daughter of a Menschaert-Menschaert marriage of apparently relatively well-to-do farmers.
I owe this information to the grandson of a sister of my great-grandmother Maria Elisabeth.

May 20 1799

Elisabeth Sterckx died in Okegem. She had been born in Pamel on April 9 1754 and was not the only Elisabeth Sterckx in my family tree.

In 1778, Elisabeth married Josephus, named Judocus, Neukermans (Okegem 1736 - 1814).

For further information, see the post " April 9 1754".

May 20 1662

On dat day, Anna Van den Waterloop was born in Okegem, a daughter to Henricus, who died in 1673, and to Joanna De Winne. There had been a Van de Waterloop family and a De Winne family in Okegem since parish registers were kept.

Anna, who died in Okegem in 1770, was the spouse of Joannes Asselman, who was born in Okegem ca 1663 and died there in 1723.

Joannes and Anna had seven children ; I descend from two of them :

-- Anna Asselman (Okegem ca 1690 - 1784) who married Joannes De Mol (Okegem 1699 - 1777)
and

-- Joannes Asselman (Okegem 1692 - 1732).

The lines have been described in the posts "April 23 1740" and "August 17 1650".

Tenjewberrymuds

Stolen from http://charmingjustcharming.blogspot.com/.

Subject: TENJEWBERRYMUDS

To get the full effect, this should be read aloud. You will understand what 'tenjewberrymuds' means by the end of the conversation.

The following is a telephone exchange between a hotel guest and room-service, at a hotel in Asia, which was recorded and published in the Far East Economic Review.

Room Service (RS) : "Morrin. Roon sirbees."
Guest (G) : "Sorry, I thought I dialed room-service."
RS : "Rye ... Roon sirbees ... morrin! Jewish to oddor sunteen??"
G : "Uh ... yes ... I'd like some bacon and eggs."
RS : "Ow July den?"
G : "What??"
RS : "Ow July den? ... pryed, boyud, poochd?"
G : "Oh, the eggs! How do I like them? Sorry, scrambled please."
RS : "Ow July dee baykem? Crease?"
G : "Crisp will be fine."
RS : "Hokay. An Sahn toes?"
G : "What?"
RS :"An toes. July Sahn toes?"
G : "I don't think so."
RS : "No? Judo wan sahn toes??"
G : "I feel really bad about this, but I don't know what 'judo wan sahn toes' means."
RS : "Toes! Toes! ... Why Jew don Juan toes? Ow bow Anglish moppin we bodder?"
G : "English muffin!! I've got it! You were saying 'Toast.' Fine. Yes, an English muffin will be fine."
RS : "We bodder?"
G : "No ... just put the bodder on the side."
RS : "Wad! ?"
G : "I mean butter ... just put it on the side."
RS : "Copy?"
G : "Excuse me?"
RS : "Copy ... tea ... meel?"
G : "Yes. Coffee, please, and that's all."
RS: "One Minnie. Scramah egg, crease baykem, Anglish moppin w bodder on sigh and copy ... rye??"
G : "Whatever you say."
RS : "Tenjewberrymuds."
G : "You're very welcome."

Now you are bilingual. Good job!

May 19 1802

Joannes Baptist Vlaeminck died in Massemen. He had been born in Melle on October 23 1741. He married Petronella Jacoba Leus.

Their son Paulus Franciscus (Massemen 1773 - Aalst 1819) became the first husband of Maria Anna Goossens (Denderhoutem 1774 - 1852) in 1805.

They were the parents of my great-great-grandmother Coleta Vlaeminck (Denderhoutem 1813 - 1891).

Throughout this blog I have taken some liberties with the spelling of the family names. The Vlaeminck family I report on is, more often that not, spelled Vlaminck. For the Ravijst family, the variations are "almost" endless ...

May 19 1687

Pieter Broeckaert was born in Wetteren, a son to Joannes (Wetteren 1653 - 1742) and to Adriana Canuel, who died there in 1730.

Pieter married Petronella Van de Sype (born ca 1702 - died in Wetteren 1767) and died himself op April 17 1749.

Pieter and Petronella had a son Joannes Josephus Broeckaert (Wetteren 1726 - 1760).

The further line has been described in post "November 17 1674".

Suez

The merger between Suez and Gaz de France is expected to - finally - fail.

See : http://www.tijd.be/nieuws/ondernemingen_energie/'Fusie_GDF_en_Suez_zal_mislukken'.7258269-432.art.

I most sincerely hope so. I have lots of good and bad, old and new reasons to hope so.

Very indirect revenge is one of them, yes. But I am a free man, I do not have to tell you why.

Plweeezze

May 17 2004

On that day, the last brother of my mother, Eugeen Robert Neukermans, died in his home in Okegem. He was almost 83. Of all my uncles, I knew him best ; his brother Jef, who passed away in 1994, was a close second.

I spent most of my holidays with my maternal grandparents on the Rattenberg in Okegem, and continued to do so after my grandmother passed away, much too soon, in 1949. "Nonkel Geen" was their youngest son. When he came home from work - my grandfather and his two surviving sons all worked at the railroad company - he always had time for me and I hold lots and lots of dear memories of him. And time did nothing to change our sincere friendship.

He was a deeply social man - it was almost impossible to visit him without being interrupted by people coming for his advice - and active in local politics in Okegem, and later in Ninove. He also was a driving force in the fives club (kaatsspel) and very involved in many other activities, including genealogical research. In that field too, I owe him a lot.

In my eyes, he was a giant of a man.

My thoughts go to his surviving wive, my aunt Jeanne, to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

May 17 1840

Antonia De Vidts was born in Pamel as the third child of Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1811 - 1881) and Maria Elisabeth Van der Sleyen (Pamel 1811 - 1860). They lived in the Koestraat and had seven children :

Henrica (Pamel 1835 - 1873) ;
Philomena (Pamel 1837 - 1870) ;
Antonia (Pamel 1840 - she probably died in Meerbeke and I still have to look up the date) ;
Petrus Josephus (Pamel 1843 - 1891) ;
an unnamed baby who died on the day of its birth in 1845 ;
Benedictus, who lived for about three months in 1847 ;
Jan Baptist (Pamel 1850 - 1860) ;
Felix (Pamel 1853 - 1940).

It may well be the loss of her third child that led to the premature death of Maria Elisabeth in 1860 - she died a couple of months after Jan Baptist ...

Antonia married Ludovicus De Schepper (Meerbeke 1833 - ?) in Pamel in 1862. As stated many times before, they were the great-grandparents of my father ; her brother Felix and his wife Blondina Muylaert (Denderhoutem 1849 - Pamel 1942) were the maternal grandparents of my mother.

My mother's mother Maria Antonia De Vidts (Pamel 1885 - Okegem 1949) thus never knew her paternal grandparents, nor her paternal aunts and uncles, except maybe for Antonia, who probably was her godmother, and for Petrus Josephus who died when she was about six ; but she knew her cousins, the children of Henrica, of Philomena, of Antonia and of Petrus Josephus.

I still have a lot of research to do on Antonia and Ludovicus, who was a miller's helper, farmer and maybe a local policeman (champetter). Once again, there is almost no published research on Meerbeke, so I have to dig up all the information the hard way.

Very American

Brought to my attention by an American friend. A terrible rant about a terrible president. Grossly overstated ? Who knows ? And who "the hell" is this fury ?

Lots of subjects

... but no further time to blog today.

The weather is contrary too : after a short, warm summer up to Wednesday, we now have autumn again : rainy and gray. I could have found some use for my garden today, but oh well, we'll do without.

Wonderdoktoor

Flanders has a problem

I am not the only one who has problems with the Flemish attitude concerning BHV.

See : http://www.sixlog.be/2008/05/non-violent-fascism-keulen-we-have-a-problem/.

Some excerpts :

"Is there such thing as non-violent fascism? ... Fascism became the most common and meaningless sevenletterword you can use to curse upon someone. Flanders is not fascist Flanders is self concerned & self-satisfied. ... Honestly what is the worst: to be called a fascist or an egocentric? "

"Flanders is so self concerned that it wants to launch image campaigns rather than questioning itself."

"... perception is reality. Flanders is seen as a majority that mistreats a minority."

"The word Flanders, in this text, refers to the Flemish political parties and government. Millions of well meaning Flemish should be respected in their integrity an dignity. They are indeed non-violent but in no way fascists. BHV is not their top of mind."

None of my business

I don't write about it much, because it is none of my business, but I am interested in the primaries in the US.

I don't like McCain. That's almost OK, I suppose ;

I do like Hillary Clinton for her "style", but not as a presidential candidate. That's politically incorrect I suppose ;

and, quite frankly, I don't like Obama ; he doesn't lie well enough. That's racist, I suppose.

I wrote it before ... poor USA ... I suppose.

Spuugzat

Frankly, I am growing more pessimistic by the day.

I do not see how this splendid little country can yet be saved. I see nothing but gross ill will on both sides (both sides is a simplification : I do not know how many sides there really are) and an army of political idiots doing their very best to sharpen the opposite viewpoints.

What worries me deeply is that - even up to a year ago - most "ordinary" people just shrugged their shoulders when these problems were talked about. But the political stalemate has made extremists out of previously sensible and tolerant people. I see them all around me, on both sides of the linguistical fence. I see very old friendships being abruptly ended over the issue.

I think divorce is unavoidable. I don't know how long it will take. It may be this year or in a couple of decades. But come it will. The wounds are too deep to be healed.

And there may be a rude awakening when we shall have to pay the cost of the divorce !

I'dd better start thinking about moving to France.

Societal collapse

How can a society, which doesn't take real care of its children - to the point where some creative minds see the need to suggest a formal education promise by parents at the birth of their children - survive ? See the post "Opvoedingsbelofte".

If that formal education promise is to be as successful as the formal promises in the marriage vows, it will become a roaring success !

As long as egocentrism and greed continue to dominate human behaviour in society, we remain well on our way to societal collapse.

Haar man Joos Vijdt, was reeds vier jaar vroeger gestorven.

May 15 1814

Philippus Timmermans, born in Meerbeke on November 13 1740, died there on that day in 1814. He was married twice : his first spouse was Catharina De Cooman (ca 1751 - Meerbeke 1791) ; the second one was Petronella Van den Berghe (Meerbeke 1766 - 1824).

According to the present state of my research, he had nine children, four of them with Petronella. The youngest of these nine children was Charles Timmermans (Meerbeke 1812 - 1883), my great-great-grandfather.

As stated before, my research on the Timmermans family in Meerbeke in the 18th and 19th century is far from complete.

Opvoedingsbelofte

Mayors (2)

The Flemish government apparently got the lid on the nose. The observers of the Council of Europe found for the french-speaking mayors.

Flemish politicians are almost besides themselves with indignation, and - at the same time - are trying to play down the message.

Could I say that, as a contrarian, I savour the moment ?

May 14 1858

Jacobus Muylaert passed away in Nieuwerkerken, where he had been born on March 24 1779. He married Barbara Schouppe (Aalst 1781 - Nieuwerkerken 1857).

Their son Franciscus Muylaert (Nieuwerkerken 1818 - Denderhoutem 1888) was the second husband of Coleta Vlaeminck (Denderhoutem 1813 - 1891), who had five children with her first husband, and three with Franciscus. The oldest of the three was Blondina Muylaert (Denderhoutem 1849 - Pamel 1942), my great-grandmother.

Blondina must have known her paternal grandparents Jacobus and Barbara. She might even have told her own grandchildren, including my mother, about them. But now, nothing remains ...

Some of it could probably be dug out of the archives : where did they live exactly, what did they do : but that holds true for every single branch of my ancestors. For the time being, I still am trying to add or to extend those branches. Most probably, I shall never have the time to "put some flesh on the bones."

May 14 1705

Judoca De Trooster died in Denderhoutem. She was married to Egidius Van der Speeten, born in Denderhoutem in 1634.

We met this couple in " January 2 1630" and other posts.

Werkzoekenden

Paulus Franciscus Vlaeminck, who had been born in Massemen on August 1 1773, died in Aalst. In 1805, he married Maria Anna Goossens (Denderhoutem 1774 - 1852) with whom he had nine children. Maria Anna remarried after his death, but had no more children with her second hsuband.

They had nine children : my great-great-grandmother Coleta Vlaeminck (Denderhoutem 1813 - 1891) was the seventh.

We have met Coleta several times before.

May 13 1651

Elisabeth Guns died in Denderhoutem. She had been married to Petrus Lievens, who died there in 1647.

We have met them before in the posts : "March 23 1613" and "November 8 1693".

Mayors

1. Belgium is a democracy

2. The mayors of Linkebeek, Wezembeek-Oppem and Kraainem - not my personal favorites at all - have been democratically elected. They have been suspended by the Flemish government for purely linguistic (legal) reasons.

3. Those mayors should be reinstated. No ifs, no whats, no negotiation.

As from today, a mission of the Council of Europe is going to look into the problem. The Flemish government will do whatever it can to avoid a negative report (it wouldn't be the first one).

As for the heart of the matter : it is highly regrettable indeed that the Flemish environment of Brussels has been "gallicized" by the refusal of its French speaking immigrants to integrate, and by the historic leniency of, and lack of political support for, the native Flemish population. The French speaking Belgians are our brothers indeed, but even brothers differ from one another. I do not have to like whatever my brother has done. I know how it feels to be ignored or treated like dirt in your own native village by "intruders" who consider themselves better because they speak another language : half a century ago that might have been called colonialism. It is not a nice feeling.

But bygones are bygones. Now it is too late : too late to bolt the stable door after the horse has bolted. One can not rewrite history. But cutting one's losses to build on what remains - and avoid similar errors in the future - is not an easy option.

In het Gents zegt men : "stekken tsiepkes, tes maïs !!!".

Opinie

Volgens Tertio is prof.

May 12 1728

Leonardus (Lenaert) Van Cauwelaert, who had been born ca 1650, died in Sint Kwintens Lennik. He was married to Anna Van Laethem (ca 1650 - Sint Kwintens Lennik 1728).

Maximiliaan Van Cauwelaert was one of their six children. He was born in Onze Lieve Vrouw Lombeek and died in Pamel, Ledebergplaats, in 1741. He was the third husband of Elisabeth Van Overstraeten (Sinte Katharina Lombeek 1692 - Pamel 1741). She had no children that I know of with her first husband , had six children with her second husband, of another De Vidts branch, and six with Maximiliaan.

One of her daughters with Maximiliaan was Catharina Theresia Van Cauwelaert (Pamel 1729 - 1805) who married Adrianus De Vidts (Pamel 1703 - 1750) with whom she had two children. She had another 13 children with her second husband Joannes Josephus Kestens (Pamel 1718 - 1778).

The eldest of her fifteen children was Petrus Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1749 - 1793), the grandfather of Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1811 - 1881), an ancestor of my mother and of my father, as I have written several times before.

May 12 1679

Maria Cobbaert died in Pamel where she had married Joannes Sterckx in 1644.

Elisabeth Sterckx (Pamel 1658 - 1714) was the fifth of their six children. She married Adrianus Van Tricht, innkeeper (Pamel1660 - 1722).

Adrianus was a son of Judocus (Pamel 1627 - 1678) and Gerarda Lambeens, born in Burst in 1629, whom we just met in the post "May 6 1639". Elisabeth and Adrianus had 10 children.

Carolus (Pamel 1696 - 1775) was number eight. In 1723 he married Josina (also Susanna) Van Londerzele (ca 1694 - Pamel 1772) in Liedekerke. They had eight children.

Catharina Suzanna Van Tricht was the eldest (Pamel 1725 - 1799). She married Nicolaes Sterckx (Pamel 1714 - 1803). Nicolaes Sterckx was a nephew of Elisabeth Sterckx forementioned. His father Cornelius, who died in Pamel in 1719, was a brother of Elisabeth. But Nicolaes never knew Elisabeth : she died in the year in which he was born.

Catharina Suzanna and Nicolaes had eight children too. Elisabeth Sterck (Pamel 1754 - Okegem 1799) was the eldest.

In 1778, she married Joannes, called Josephus Neukermans (Okegem 1736 - 1814), with whom she had ten children. Adrianus Neukermans (Okegem 1788 - 1860) , my great-great-grandfather, was number five.

Joannes Broeckaert died in Wetteren, where he had been born on June 5 1628. He was married to Maria Peron (born ca 1627, died in Wetteren in 1698).

The line has been described in the posts :"October 27 1672" and "November 17 1674".

May 12 1646

Anna sConincx, who probably was born in Iddergem, died in Okegem. She was the second wife of Petrus De Winne, who died in Okegem in 1640. They hade nine children : Petrus had an additional three with his first wife. He was "meijer" of Okegem from 1604 to 1638. Both he and Anna became "buitenpoorters" of Aalst in 1594.

I descend from two of their children :

-- Adrianus De Winne who married Maria Muylaert - his widow fell on hard times and had to be assisted by the "armentafel" ; I descend from their daughter Joanna ;

-- Petrus De Winne, an innkeeper and brewer, who married Cornelia Sonck in 1625. Petrus died in Okegem in 1660 ; his wife died there in 1667. I descend from their son Renier (Okegem ca 1634 - 1701).

I have described the complicated lines from this persons to me before. See the posts "July 5 1635", "January 17 1660" and others.

Wilders

The author of Fitna is dreaming about an acquisition of Flanders by the Netherlands. That's not how he says it, that's what he means. How can I know that ? In the same way he "knows" what islamists think. If there was any remaining doubt about his sanity, it is gone now.

On this day of Pentecost, one - relatively poor - rendition of one of my all time favorite gregorian chants.

May 11 1828

Exactly 180 years ago, Petronella Van Eeckhoudt died in Pamel, where she had been born on February 14 1771. She married Michael Van der Sleyen (Pamel 1758 - 1827). They had six children. Maria Elisabeth Van der Sleyen (Pamel 1811 - 1860) was the youngest.

This line has been reported on over and over again, including in the post "May 9 1811". Maria Elisabeth was 17 years and two days old when her mother passed away.

May 10 1693

David De Dier was born in Denderhoutem, a son to Franciscus, who died in Denderhoutem in 1715, and of Maria Meganck (Denderhoutem 1666 - 1734).

David, a not very common name, married Joanna Maria Renneboog (Aaigem 1705 - Denderhoutem 1775).

We have met this couple before : see the posts "April 10 1738", "April 6 1777" ...

May 10 1936

On that day, that cursed day, the eldest brother of my mother died, barely 23 years old. Although a simple "working man", a carpenter, he was a man of initiative and vision and deep convictions. In the end, it was his service in the army which killed him, and the army ignored him.

Kwaadaardig

Sorry, Bertje. En zo zijn er duizenden voorbeelden !

A storm in a glass of water

A small Turkish newspaper has discovered - quite possibly with the provokative aid of some flemish nationalists - that the 17th century pulpit in the church of Our Lady in Dendermonde depicts a "Mahomet" and a "Koran" being crushed by two angels.

That is front page news : the paper demands that this scandalous infamy be ended at once.

See : http://www.standaard.be/Artikel/Detail.aspx?artikelId=3P1RT2M8.

Yeah, right. Some authorities already responded with some hypocrite, but politically correct hogwash - it is not Mahomet, but a Persian, and everyone knows that Mahomet was an Arab ; the book may not have been the Koran etc ...

But they are forgetting, probably never have known, that Islam was the main threat to Europe in the 17th century. Remember the siege of Vienna ? Remember how christians are treated in Turkey ? And remember what the Turks did to the magnificent Byzantine mosaics they discovered when they conquered Constantinopel in the fifteenth century ?

Are we going to rewrite our whole history so as not to step on some sensitive toes ? Are we going to let foreigners, and very weird strangers at that, tell us what we can consider part of our cultural heritage or not ?

In the context of such inanity, provoked or not, there can be but one answer : piss off !!

**

For one moment, I thought it was April first.
Then I remembered that journalists cannot always be trusted, and that the second version of the facts often is very different from the first.
But this looks so in character that I have been less that careful and spit out my thoughts without waiting for further confirmation.

Turkey in the EU? Not in my lifetime, not if I can help it (which I can't) !

Disgusting

... and unnecessary. On page 2 - 3 De Standaard publishes a big photo of six corpses neatly laid out in a row. A whole family which died in the Myanmar disaster and quite clearly a montage as we often see them for Middle East troubles. Fortunately they put it on page two so that one does not get it full in the face when one opens one's paper over breakfast.

No, I am not indifferent to the sufferings and the injustice in the world. But what is the use of that kind of pictures, except to satisfy a craving for unhealthly sensationalism ?

A long time ago, for similar photos, I have put the question to the paper but never got an answer. Clearly, I do not understand the first thing about journalistic ethics.

May 10 1940

Very early in the bright morning of May 10 1940 the German Nazis invaded Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg. After terrible sufferings and bloodshed, the largest part of Belgium was liberated in the fall of 1944, but the von Rundstedt offensive around Christmas 1944 put the fear of the Hun occupation in the hearts of many of my compatriots again. Fortunately, the US army stopped them in their tracks.

My father fought for his country, first in the "achttiendaagse veldtocht" and later in the armed resistance, de "Witte Brigade" Fidelio. And he didn't join in 1944, as so many would-be patriots did.

How the world has changed ... now, many politicians do their utmost to destroy the country saved by the heroism of its population and its liberators. And the image of the USA, who played the largest role in our liberation, and for which we are eternally grateful, has not grown any better either ...

May 9 1811

Maria Elisabeth Van der Sleyen is born in Pamel, the last of seven children of Michael (Pamel 1758 - 1827) and Petronella Van Eeckhoudt (Pamel 1771 - 1828). She married Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1811 - 1881). We have met that couple numerous times before. They had eight children.

Their third child Antonia (Pamel 1840 - Meerbeke) was the great-grandmother of my father Petrus Joannes Timmermans (Meerbeke 1913 - Gent 1980) ; their youngest son Felix (Pamel 1853 - 1940) was the grandfather of my mother, Margaretha Felicitas Neukermans (Okegem 1914 - Gent 2000).

May 9 1639

On that date, Joanna died in Pamel. Her family name has not been recorded but may have been Sterckx. She married Joannes Van Tricht, whom we have met before : see the post "December 9 1623".

The Van Tricht family arrived in Pamel after the wars of religion and has been relatively well documented in the later generations, but some confusion in the earlier generations remains. Joannes Van Tricht died in Pamel in 1623.

The son of Joannes and Joanna, Renerius, died in Pamel in 1641. He married Maria Felix, who died in 1622, and then Maria Anna Elisabeth Van Snick, who died in Pamel in 1642. According to the records, Renerius had one son with Maria Felix and 4 daughters with Maria Anna Elisabeth Van Snick.

Up to now, I had Judocus Van Tricht (Pamel 1627 - 1678), farmer of the Withuis on the Kwinkeleer who married to Gerarda Lambeen, as their son and an ancestor of mine.

Judocus is an ancestor of mine, but his parents apparently were not Renerius and Maria Felix, but Henricus Remigius (Bartholomeus) Van Tricht and Margareta Gillis (who died in Pamel in 1668). Not much more is written about Henricus Remigius in the parish registers, but he must have been a contemporary of Renerius.

At least, that's what I read in the new "Gezinsreconstructie gemeente Pamel 1622 - 1799" by Rita Van Isveldt, who also was one of my earlier sources. Probably, the confusion will never be cleared up completely, as the parish registers clearly have some "holes" in them.

The line from Judocus and Gerarda has been documented in "December 2 1641" and other posts.

As a complement to this post, the earliest Van Tricht's mentioned in the parish registers were :

the forementioned Joannes, who died in 1623 ;
another Joannes, who died in 1632 ;
Renerius, only known child of Joannes, who died in 1641 ;
a Remigius, who died in 1665 and who may well have been "our" Henricus Remigius ;
"our" Henricus Remigius for whom no dates are given, but whose wife died in 1668.

The solution to the confusion may be found - if a solution there is - in other archived documents (staten van goed ? or other documents) or in the parish records of neighboring villages.

UN and EU

The UN cannot force the Myanmar supremo killers and gangsters to admit foreign aid into the country for the stricken population, but the almighty EU is going to force the Italian government to address the garbage and refuse problem in the streets of Napoli.

The world is a mad place indeed ...

Onvrijheid doodt

May 8 1698

Anna Van den Heuvel, first spouse of Henricus Covens, died in Pamel.

She married Henricus Covens, born in Malderen in 1660 and farmer of the Groenhof in Malderen, in Grimbergen in 1687. They lived in Grimbergen for some time, and then moved to Hof te Berchem in Pamel, where Henricus became an alderman.

They had four children, and Henricus had another seven children with his second spouse. He died in Pamel in 1739.

Carolus Covens (born before 1699 in Malderen or Grimbergen) died in Pamel in Hof te Berchem in 1770. He married Barbara Galmaert (born in Gooik in 1720), in Gooik in 1739. As we have stated before they had 12 children - see also the posts "February 1 1739", "November 25 1770" ...

May 8 1945

Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day) was May 8 1945, the day when the World War II allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of nazi Germany and the end of Hitler's third Reich, the most beastly and inhuman regime ever.

On April 30, Hitler committed suicide during the battle for Berlin ; so the surrender of Germany was authorised by his replacement, admiral Karl Dönitz.

The unconditional surrender of Germany was signed at Rheims on May 7 and ratified at Berlin on May 8. But May 8 marks the formal celebration of the Allies' victory in Europe during World War II.

I see no trace of this anniversary in my paper. May 1968, sure ; the world expo in Brussels in 1958, of course. But the end to that regime of satanic and barbaric butchery, sorry but no ...

Maybe we should not remind on eastern neighbors of certain "errors" their parents and grandparents committed ?

Zware criminelen

Zie : http://www.standaard.be/Artikel/Detail.aspx?artikelId=DMF07052008_046.

Zie : http://www.tijd.be/nieuws/ondernemingen_diensten/Rusthuismarkt_lucratief_en_complex.7080578-431.art.

Zie : http://www.tijd.be/nieuws/ondernemingen_diensten/Rotschild_doet_rondje_langs_de_velden_met_rusthuisbedden_Waterland.7074940-431.art.
