Maria Baetens died in Okegem on July 30 1690. She had been born in Denderhoutem on July 6 1625 and married Reinier De Winne (born ca 1634 who died in Okegem in 1701) in Okegem in 1659.
Reinier was an alderman of Okegem in 1684 - 1700, but he was broke when he died. The poor's table could not collect the rent in 1702.
Reinier and Maria had two children :
-- Cornelia was born in Okegem in 1659, a couple of months before Maria and Reinier married. Cornelia was baptised as Cornelia Baetens. During labor the mother stated that Reinier was the father, and Cornelia was legalised by the marriage. Cornelia married twice ;
-- Catharina was born in Okegem in 1161. She married Niclaas Straetman, who died in Okegem in 1719. Niclaas was a son of Adrianus and Margareta Van der Kelen whom I have just named in a recent post. Catharina became a buitenpoorter of Geraardsbergen in 1719 and died in Okegem in 1730 at over 70 years of age (??).

Progress report
More often than not I write that I (still) have to research very significant parts of my ancestry. I must admit that for over a year, I made almost no progress at all in the study of the primary sources, for the very simple reason that I haven't visited the archives.
One does not go to Beveren or Leuven for one or two hours of research. One tends to spend the whole day there, but my eyesight does not permit that any more, at least for the time being. Half a day scrutiny of often almost illegible microfilms in what we call "priest's latin" is more than my eyes can bear. But half a day is not enough to make significant progress. And there are so many branches of my ancestry to research that I appear unable to define my priorities.
The progress I have made came from published research by other people, for which of course I am very grateful.
So now I am thinking about renting an apparatus and the appropriate films to do some research at home. I believe that is a possibility.

Marcom Menschaert died in Nederhasselt. He was the husband of Anna Catharina Menschaert who died in Nederhasselt in 1833. They were the parents of Regina Menschaert (Nederhasselt ca 1799 - 1859) who became the mother of Virginia Meganck (Nederhasselt 1834 - 1917) : see "June 27 1838" and other posts.

Cornelia Booms died in Okegem on July 30 1621, and was buried in the church the next day. In 1598 she married Petrus Straetman in Denderhoutem. It appears probable that she was born (or living) in Denderhoutem at the time of her marriage.
Petrus was reported as a "buitenpoorter" of Aalst in 1596 and 1602. In 1598-1601 he was in trouble for having wounded Hans De Broedere with a stone, but the bailiff of Aalst accepted a settlement (minnelijke schikking). Petrus died in Okegem in 1628.

And inflation in Belgium is only a minimal part of the global trouble that is brewing.
We are going to live some very interesting times, believe you me. Stagflation should be the least of our worries. A deep recession with runaway prices and dwindling assets look ever more probable. Remember the 1930s ? They might give you some idea of what is coming.

De tweede boodschap die de wereld moet rondgaan, is dat échte asielzoekers hier ook welkom zijn, maar dat pseudo-asielzoekers hier snel en efficiënt uitgezift en teruggestuurd worden. Een snelle erkenningsprocedure hebben we nu blijkbaar, maar het terugsturen loopt nog mank.
Als de hoofdboodschap blijft dat we hier met 100.000 of meer illegalen zitten waartegen we niet durven of kunnen optreden en waarvan we er om de zoveel jaar een aantal regulariseren, zijn we wellicht wel menselijk bezig - en dat is wenselijk - maar schieten we constant in de eigen voet. Fashion climbers
A new fashion trend is developing in Brussels. Last night another two building cranes have been occupied by asylum seekers ("sans papiers"). Six cranes are now occupied by some 40 activists (I am not sure that they are all asylum seekers !).
For once I agree with the relevant administration which describes these actions as senseless and dangerous.

Do I have some sympathy with these specific asylum seekers ? None whatsoever. They seem to think the have a right to stay and live in this country. They forget that we have the right to deecide who can stay and who cannot. And I do not see the most needy people, such as a desperate mother with children, or sick people in need of urgent care, climb those cranes.
It is a shame indeed that our government is almost criminally negligent in its indecision about regularising the situation of asylum seekers, but that does not mean that the "victims" of that indecision can undertake whichever action pleases them. And that does not alter the fact that they are often supported by people with hidden agendas, which have nothing to do with human rights.
My solution : let the crane people have their way.
With an average six to seven people per crane, life up there cannot be very comfortable. Put a couple of policemen under each crane and seal off all contacts between the climbers and their sympathisers at the feet of the crane. Their cell phones will not be a big help in keeping their determination and the circus will be finished quite easily.
And, come next election time, remember the political nincompoops who are intent on destroying the structure of this country and its society by ill will or indecision in such grave matters.

Ok, the US have cleaned up bigger (procentual) messes before, but not very often in a deeply troubled economy and with a couple of wars on their hands.
Good luck to them and to the rest of the world, because if they fail, the rest op the world will have to pick up a major part of the bill.

Eén enkele keer - en ik bedoel één keer ; ik schrijf geen hollands - heb ik in een kledingzaak een paar seconden lang een jeans geprobeerd. Ik heb er nooit een bezeten, en ik zal er nooit een kopen of dragen, omdat ik niet graag incomfortabel gecartonneerd schuurpapier draag, dank je. Daarenboven haat ik uniformen en uniformiteit. Maar dat is mijn uiterst persoonlijke mening.
En toch ... ik heb altijd al geweten dat ik een zeer uitzonderlijk specimen van het menselijk ras ben : "nen echte contrairen" ; dat is hierbij dan nog maar eens bewezen. Ahum !

True or not ? Frankly, I am tempted to believe it. There is a lot of soap on the slope, and apparently no more grip on our shoes !
