Confutatis - Lacrimosa

While the wicked are confounded,
doomed to flames of woe unbounded
call me with thy saints surrounded.

Low I kneel, with heart submission,
see, like ashes, my contrition;
help me in my last condition.

Ah! that day of tears and mourning!
From the dust of earth returning
man for judgment must prepare him;
Spare, O God, in mercy spare him!

Lord, all pitying, Jesus blest,
grant them thine eternal rest. Amen.

Another excerpt from the Dies Irae by Mozart.

Tuba mirum

Wondrous sound the trumpet flingeth;
through earth's sepulchers it ringeth;
all before the throne it bringeth.

Death is struck, and nature quaking,
all creation is awaking,
to its Judge an answer making.

Lo! the book, exactly worded,
wherein all hath been recorded:
thence shall judgment be awarded.

When the Judge his seat attaineth,
and each hidden deed arraigneth,
nothing unavenged remaineth.

What shall I, frail man, be pleading?
Who for me be interceding,
when the just are mercy needing?

Part of the Dies Irae, one of my favorite excerpts from Mozart's Requiem. Not the best interpretation, but impressive anyway ...

All Saints

Direct ancestors of mine who were born or died on "Allerheiligen" :

-- Maria De Leeuw died in Pamel on All Saints 1683 ;

-- Michael Van der Sleyen was born (baptised) in Pamel on All Saints 1758 ;

-- Nicolaes Timmermans died in Meerbeke on All Saints 1808.

Oradour ... remember

I visited Oradour-sur-Glane in September 2007 and was moved to the very core of my being. I posted the famous poem on that "village martyr" shortly after my return.

More than one year later, this is and remains the most frequently consulted post on my blog. It still is consulted regularly. This gives me a serene and deep joy because it shows that these people are not forgotten.

Thanks to all of you who took the trouble to read my posts about that terrible event.

Allerheiligen

De herfst blaast op den horen,
en 't wierookt in het hout;
de vruchten gloren.
De stilten weven gobelijnen
van gouddraad over 't woud,
met reeën, die verbaasd verschijnen
uit varens en frambozehout,
en sierlijk weer verdwijnen...
De schoonheid droomt van boom tot boom,
doch alle schoonheid zal verdwijnen,
want alle schoonheid is slechts droom,
maar Gij zijt d' Eeuwigheid!
Heb dank dat Gij mijn weemoed wijdt
en zegen ook zijn vruchten.
Een ganzendriehoek in de luchten;

Congo ... and elsewhere

From the BBC website : "The UN Security Council condemns military action by Congolese rebels, as thousands flee fighting in eastern DR Congo."

It would be laughable, ridiculous indeed, if it weren't infinitely sad.

There, and in so many other regions of the world, we are guilty of indifference and almost criminal insouciance ... Time and time again, crises erupt and we intervene way too late or do nothing at all.

Opinies

Cheer up !!

Noble prize winner Paul Krugman is thinking about some additional bad surprises. I read on his website :

'Right now I feel like the guy who was told, "Cheer up - things could be worse!" So he cheered up, and sure enough, things got worse.'

A simple question for US banks

"Why Are The Screw-Ups Still in Charge?

If there is one thing that has become abundantly clear over the past year-and-a-half or so, it is how badly so many financial institutions -- effectively, their senior executives -- managed risk in the pursuit of short-term, turbo-charged profits.

Not only did they hand out loans like candy to a wide range of high-risk borrowers, they relied on all sorts of accounting chicanery and derivative machinations to further augment their returns in ways that seemingly did not make any allowances for the possibility that things could go even a little bit wrong.

Given all the red ink that has flowed through the financial industry in the wake of this far-reaching stupidity, grotesque incompetence and criminal negligence, why is it that so many of the managers responsible are still in charge of those firms?

In fact, incredible as it seems, the screw-ups are in many cases being allowed to preside over the allocation and deployment of myriad capital injections, cheap loans, and taxpayer handouts as if they were the innocent bystanders of a totally unexpected natural disaster.

Jeez, talk about rewarding bad behavior!"

GaultMillau

There apparently is no contradiction at all between utter stupidity and political correctness. The more I read, the more I tend to believe they are natural allies.

I know for a fact that the public Flemish television was and is an utterly correct institution. That is one of the major reasons why I almost never watch their news shows. They tend to make me go ballistic.

The discussions about the canceled show on Hitler's preferred food and the ridiculously subjective way in which the new bishop of Antwerp was grilled by well thinking "journalists" prove once more that stupidity has a major role to pay in the media debate.

-- In Ninove gebeuren mirakels.

My nightmare

American cultural and economic imperialism, both founded on the dogm of free markets and competition, may end in the deepest depression ever known to mankind.

No right minded European would regret the implosion of American cultural imperialism - it has brought preciously little to the world.

I myself would not regret the demise of American economic imperialism, were it not that I do not see a better system to take over. That better system has to be built from scratch , and has to be based on people centered principles instead of on greed. Not an easy objective to attain. A prolonged period of chaos and/of war for influence looks more likely indeed.

And unfortunately, neither of the presidential candidates in the USA appears to have the superhuman gifts which will be required to lead the world out of its present mess - probably no single person has - but my worst worry is that they may not even be fully aware of the seriousness of the problem.

The whole system trembles and shakes, and the foundations are giving away. From the bottom of my heart, I hope to be proven wrong, but I am not counting on it ...

Armageddon after all ?

Grab what you can get in good times and grab what you can get in bad times; you almost never really earn what you can grab. Let greed reign your mind and heart.

Ronduit schandalig

http://www.standaard.be/Meningen/Commentaar/.

Zie : http://www.standaard.be/Artikel/Detail.aspx?artikelId=AT227FK6.

-- "Bedrijfsprincipes binnenbrengen in non-profitorganisaties vraagt tijd.

Back

Yes, I'm back in dark, sad, autumny Belgium, while yesterday in Firenze it felt like an outstanding late summer day. And I'm back in the misery and clownesque theatre I was able to avoid for a week : financial crisis, savings problems, US elections, Begian budget problems, political and other stupid news. It was nice while it lasted.

I saw Firenze, Pisa, Lucca, Siena, San Geminiani, Carrara and Montecatini, where we stayed. The town is full of majestic looking palace hotels of the early twentieth century with enormous lobbies and tiny rooms. Many of these hotels apparently do not know the difference between two and four star comfort. I do not need four stars, not by a long shot, but I do not like misleading publicity either. There are not that many tourists in Montecatini, except for busload upion busload of Italian retirees. But it's their country after all. And our own twenty strong group was a sure antidote and a real pleasure to be with.

I had seen and enjoyed Siena before, but Pisa's "Piazza dei Miracoli" litterally took my breath away. It was difficult to tear myself away. In my view, ten duomo's, each one as beautiful as the one in Florence, could not compete with the duomo of Pisa. It is one of the most beautiful buildings - inside and out - which I ever saw. Except for its Giotto campanile, the Firenze duomo cannot even compete with the marvel in Sienna.

Firenze was another story. The arrogance of ages past still is perceptible, and, even this late in October, the monuments are flooded with tourists. I almost stepped away from the security measures (circus ?) at the Uffizi. The world famous museum leaves a distinctly sloppy impression and too many top pieces are being restored, lent out for other expositions or are left without any documentation.

Except in the immediate vicinity of the monuments, central Firenze is a rather dirty city full of grafitty and trash. It does not invite to a repeat visit. Been there, seen that, done that. Period.

But the real winner of the trip is and remains the undescribably beautiful and enchanting Tuscany landscape in its autumn colors.

I shall not post any pictures with this article : they couldn't possibly show the splendor of the cities and landscapes of Tuscany.

Socialists ????

Media

Hoe spectaculairder hoe liever.

The superficiality and irresponsibility of the media is growing into a very serious worldwide problem. In earlier times, lying for ideological reasons was generally accepted : the end justified the means. Now the ulterior objective is neither truth, nor objective information, but a good story that will sell.

People NEVER learn

A few paragraphs from Franklin D. Roosevelt's inaugural address some 66 years ago:

"Finally, in our progress toward a resumption of work we require two safeguards against a return of the evils of the old order; there must be a strict supervision of all banking and credits and investments; there must be an end to speculation with other people's money, and there must be provision for an adequate but sound currency."

California

I never listen to the news on radio or TV. The focus on unsignificant local events, the strictly enforced political correctness, the superficiality and utter subjectivity of the "analysis", and the pompous tone of most of the news readers send me into orbit.

The only way I'm exposed to it is by zapping. And yesterday, zapping happily along, I got a choice morsel of news on VTM.

They were reporting on the fires in California, and added that these were spreading to the "West coast of California", where some very expensive houses were threatened by the flames. That was not a lapse ; the expression "West coast of California" was repeated at least once.

The West coast of California .... I thought I had seen some of the main sights in California, but obviously I haven't. I wonder what the East coast of California looks like. Maybe, I should listen to the news more often and learn.

Waarborg

Break

There will be no posting on this blog for an undetermined period, starting next saturday.

Historians are (sometimes) smarter ...

... than economists, and certainly than bankers.

Read Mark Reynebeau's "XXX-factor": http://www.standaard.be/artikel/detail.aspx?artikelId=U821JOFG.

Depression may last for 10 years

That's the opinion of Roland Leuschel, previously chief economist of BBL bank in Belgium. I had almost forgotten about him, but here he is again, stronger than ever.

Mr Leuschel has never been taken quite seriously by the economic establishment and its high priests, but I always have had a solid respect for his often contrarian opinions. He is one of the guys who saw the present crisis coming, and who has correctly evaluated the consequences of Mr Greenspan's catastrophical policies at a time when it was politically correct to praise that man into high heaven.

Read : http://www.lesoir.be/actualite/economie/roland-leuschel-la-crise-va-2008-10-14-649462.shtml.

Some excerpts :

And don't forget to read the reactions on the article : juicy, juicy !!

Definition of the stock exchange

This ago old cartoon, which was published in The Economist in 1987, keeps cropping up on the internet, even on the site of the new Nobel prize for economics, Paul Krugman.

I never saw a better definition of what the "stock exchange" is all about.

Doping

Father

Today, October 14, would have been the 95th birthday of my dearly beloved father. Unfortunately, after a life largely dominated by hard toil, sacrifice and more than his share of misery, he passed away before his 67th birthday. His "objective" which je stated more than once in a semi-serious, semi-joking way, was to become 76 years old. The Big Boss decided otherwise, and I am sure the Big Boss had his reasons, although I shall never understand them.

My father's was dedicated to his wife and children, and he kept an open heart to everyone around him.

Friendship, wisdom, justice and simplicity were some of his outstanding qualities.

He was a giant among men. I miss him ever more.

Faces ... and clutter

A couple of days ago I was going through some old papers. I have boxes and boxes full of them. You never know when you might need those papers again. And don't you believe there is some order in there. I stuff papers in a box until it is full, and then start a new one.

One of the consequences is that for years I haven't known where my insurance contracts are. But I know I have them, because I never throw away anything which might be marginally useful in some distant future. I still have my bank excerpts for 1964 ...

So, digging around, I found my tax declarations for the late nineties, some souvenirs, a box of medication which expired in 1983, and a batch of photos.

These were photos of the last five years or so of my professional life - I could date them because of a couple of well remembered events. As for the people in the pictures : one face in four of those who worked in my own department no longer carries a name. I simply forgot them. And more than two faces in three of people who worked in the same group have no longer any name attached to them.

I recognise faces, I forget names. For the record, I retired at the end of 2000 - not that long ago. I may have written this before, but one day in Frankfurt airport, waiting for a delayed flight, I talked for two or three hours with a guy I knew I had worked with. When we said goodbye, I had to ask him to tell me his name. Rather annoying ...

If you have had the courage to read this post, you will understand that there are a couple of words I sincerely hate and which are at the basis of a lot of shitty reality TV programs : clutter and decluttering. If you do not clean out your clutter, you are a conservative dinosaur and a danger to society. Well, I am proud to be.

No one, but absolutely no one, is going to tell me what I can keep and what I can't keep.

Politici

Crisis ...

What's the definition of optimism?

What's the difference between an investment banker and a pigeon?

Television

I've been looking at the programs on offer tonight on the ever diminishing number of TV stations included in the basic offer of Telenet.

Sports, reality TV, series out of the stone age which are being shown for the umptieth time, absurd TV games, and so on and so forth.

And what can I say about the news programs except that they probably are focused on politically correct ten to twelve year old kids. No information without infotainment and not a single decent movie or documentary in sight, except maybe after midnight.

It is almost unbelievable that we have to pay for that crap. We should be paid for looking at it, because these programs are utterly dangerous : even in small doses, they can and do impair our physical and psychic health.

I just bought a new TV set ; I hesitated for months before doing so. I still wonder why I finally did it.

Begrafenissen

Dies irae, dies illa !!

Sociologie

Paul Volcker

Mr Volcker was chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1979 to 1987. His comments on today's "problems" :

"There is, and must be, recognition of the essential role that free and competitive financial markets play in a vigorous, innovative economic system. There needs to be understanding, in that context, that financial ups and downs -- and financial crises -- will be inevitable, even with responsible economic policies and sensible regulation. But never again should so much economic damage be risked by a financial structure so fragile, so overextended, so opaque as that of recent years."

See : http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122360251805321773.html.

My italics. Mr Volcker's comment is not very flattering for his successor ...

I remember

I remember the near slum I was born in in December 1940. It was (is) located in the Kattestraat in Okegem.

I remember the (higher) stable building and our minuscule house, which was the last in a row of three. As so often in those times, the houses did not front the street ; the side wall of the first of the houses stood on the street.

Behind the barn, one could make a short cut, across one or two properties, to my grandfather's large garden.
As for our house, the pictures (taken in the 1970s ?), show three windows and a door. I remember one or two windows only. The houses were absolutely tiny. On the pictures, part of the roof of our house had collapsed. Since then, the houses have been beautifully redone (almost rebuilt). I ignore if there are three dwellings still.
We lived there until late 1945, when my father had entered the gendarmerie and was stationed in Ghent.

I have some memories of our life there. I wrote about some of them. Others may possibly follow.

Dogm

One splendid exemple that economics is a religion with dogms. I quote :

Save Free Markets - Save The World

"US government may take part ownership in banks"

News that the Bush administration is considering taking part ownership in a number of U.S. banks helped restore a relative calm over global financial markets Thursday. Well if there was any doubt left, now it should be very clear to anyone that we are witnessing the greatest governmental power grab in the history of the United States and that free market economics in this country may be dead.

Government created this "crisis" and blamed free markets for the problem. It has thus given itself license to nationalize an industry critical to our no longer free market economy.

Fear is the key. These villains are feeding on our fear, executing an economic coup. The worst part is that they have convinced us this is what we need, what we want. Not me! The Government and the people executing this coup are not our saviors. They are not heroes. They are Villains.

Save The Free Markets - Save The World.

(found on Creative Minority Report)

Can there be better proof that no one is blinder than they who do not want to see ?

How dogmatic do you have to be to blame the present crisis on governments instead of on free market excesses ???

Unfortunately, this is not a solitary exemple. It is a relatively inoffensive one, but internet is full of - mainly American - conservative websites and blogs who spin the same story and sell the same drivel.

Poor America, indeed !!

Puis XII

Tomorrow, October 9, is the fiftieth anniversary of pope Puis XII's death. He was the pope of my younger years, the last pope of the old liturgy and - I almost write - old faith, for which, in my weaker moments, I have been known to yearn.

The man was venerated as a saint during his lifetime and he was completely torn down after his death : that turnaround started with the publication of "Der Stellvertreter" in 1963.

In my lifetime, this is one of two major radical changes in public opinion. The second, quite ironically, concerns Israel. Up to 1976 at least the whole Western public opinion solidly backed Israel. That too has changed drastically.

Now, as long as the Vatican archives for the second world war are not opened, we shall not know the full truth - maybe we shall not know it even then.

But one thing is clear : Puis XII may not have been a saint ; he may have lacked courage ; he may have been too timid and diplomatic ; he most certainly was a conservative ; but he most certainly was not a henchman of the nazis and other fascist killers.

Found in my paper. Not really funny ...

Trade in Fortis hasn't resumed yet.

Not surprising when one sees what's happening to Dexia and to "rock solid" KBC in small Belgium and what's happening worldwide. Panicky governments desperately trying to calm down panicky investors.

Everyone, except for the develish iniatiators and/or manipulators of this crisis, groping around in the dark.

A financial Armageddon, indeed.

Brotherly love

"The Deir al-Sultan Monastery on the roof of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem is in danger of collapse. The monastery's two chapels and the tiny rooms where Ethiopian Orthodox monks live are at the heart of dispute with the Coptic Church which claims ownership. Now they could crumble, injuring the many tourists who visit the site, as well as the monks who live there."

See : http://www.catholic.org/international/international_story.php?id=29923.

Christian brotherly love at its very best.

Zelfoverschatting

Bah.

Poor, poor rich men

De Standaard weet dat de val van Fortis een half miljoen Belgen armer gemaakt heeft, en blikt meewarig op enkele specifieke gevallen ;

Zie : http://www.standaard.be/Artikel/Detail.aspx?artikelId=NV21EL4J&kanaalid=630.

Don't pity capitalists and businessmen : they'll pull through all right. Pity the poor, retired John Sixpack who has to live off his meagre pension and/or savings !

Grumpy

Last night, I could not sleep and I watched a small part of the discussion between America's two presidential candidates. I couldn't keep on watching.

What I saw and heard frightened me almost beyond words. Maybe I was grumpy because of my lack of sleep, but the body language of those two guys, although totally different, was eloquent beyond words. A dogmatic "dry old stick" against a dogmatic "car salesman", both promising earth on heaven, and both ignoring (the world wide threat being born out of) America's international policy debacle, its (possibly) coming economic and financial demise, and the extent of its social wasteland.

I wrote it before, and I will write it again : poor America.

Totally useless

The European Union, great in details and hairsplitting reglementations, double zero in vision and statemanslike decisions and interventions.

Armageddon

While the financial Armageddon rages on, the Belgian government clearly battles on (ahum). In the renewed crisis about Dexia, the group which evolved out of the bank of local and regional authorities, they pulled a stunning deus ex machina. Our former prime minister Jean-Luc Dehaene - a man for all impossible jobs - has been named president. As if our voluminous politician could stop the tsunami : there is no breach in the dike he can throw himself into : the dike is gone !

Now, that man is one of the very few politicians I respect (a little) - maybe even more for his style than for his results, which were not bad after all. But putting that man in that spot is an act of desperation of our government. Clearly the French, who took control of Dexia out of Belgian hands a week ago, are standing firm. But letting the fish almost drown before netting it is a dangerous strategy, or should I write game : there might be no fish left.

St Cirq Lapopie

One of the most beautiful villages in France, overhanging the Lot river. I visited it in drenching rain in last August, but it was well worth the while.

Of course the cost of maintaining such a marvel is that it is being turned into a tourist trap, full of souvenir shops and the like.

Still, a marvelous place in the fantastically beautiful Quercy region. The whole area is steeped in history.
.
I haven't written much about my trips to the Dordogne in August and my tour of France with Lourdes as the focal point in September. The weather was not what one might have expected ; the sights, the food and the company were outstanding, but the coach trips were very tiring. I came home to get rested just in time for the next trip ... And I'm off again in a couple of weeks, to Tuscany this time. Spending what little savings the banks have left me.

Sad or mad ?

Whoe-ha-ha !!!! It would be funny, if it weren't so sad ...

Darkness falls on America

From a former assistant secretary in the Treasury department in the Reagan administration :

http://www.counterpunch.org/roberts10062008.html.

I know that that this writer is not (fully) objective. But then who is ? Anyway, I shall not comment because I am not sufficiently familiar with the detailed facts concerning the US.

But good news it isn't.

Race

Zie : http://www.standaard.be/Artikel/Detail.aspx?artikelId=DMF06102008_040.

Foresight

My dear father was a very early armed resistant in the second world war. He often told me how, once the Germans had been driven from our country, the number of resistants exploded. People, who had hovered in the shadow in deep fright for years, all of a sudden boosted about their heroic actions under the occupation and often were the first and the worst to punish the traitors and collaborators.

I have been thinking about that quite often recently. When I hear the politicians and listen to or read the media, I am bound to conclude that 99 % of them have seen the present financial tsunami coming.

Barmy b*s*. They were caught with their pants down.

Now, I can honestly say I have seen it coming. For a very long time I have known that the system of (unregulated) free market enterprise is rotten to the core. But I didn't act on it either. Apparently, I never believed our bankers were that stupid. I never believed most of them didn't even have a clue of what they were doing.

So, like everyone else, I am paying a price. I just hope that my savings will not evaporate completely.

Ervaringsdeskundige

Taliban

According to my paper, politicians are beginning to distinguish "good" and "bad" taliban. So there are good and bad murderers after all !

Or is it just the application of an age-old saying : if you can't beat them, join them ? And that is not limited to Afghanistan is it ?

Read : http://www.standaard.be/Artikel/Detail.aspx?artikelId=BA21CFSS&word=taliban.

What about ...

... genealogy ? Hmm, quite, yes.

I realise I haven't written a post on my family or my ancestors for ages ... eh, I mean months.

The reasons are many : travel, lack of time, lack of news, eye trouble and an abundance of other interesting subjects.

I'm not going to make any promises. We'll see.

Bank robbers and asset strippers

The two English archbishops of the Anglican church have not always been known for their realistic points of view. But sometimes they too see the light.

Writing in the Spectator, archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams attacked "paper transactions with no concrete outcome beyond profit for traders".

Dr Williams focused on the financial industry's trading of debts, which he said had "without accountability... been the motor of astronomical financial gain for many in recent years". He said the current financial crisis "exposes the element of basic unreality in the situation - the truth that almost unimaginable wealth has been generated by equally unimaginable levels of fiction, paper transactions with no concrete outcome beyond profit for traders".

He said: "The biggest challenge in the present crisis is whether we can recover some sense of the connection between money and material reality - the production of specific things, the achievement of recognisably human goals that have something to do with a shared sense of what is good for the human community in the widest sense."

Quotes from : http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7634641.stm.

Dr John Sentamu, archbishop of York, told a room full of bankers that short sellers (people who who sell borrowed shares, betting that prices will fall before they have to buy them them back) are "bank robbers and asset strippers".

Right he is, of course he is , but let's not forget that "they are just one small part of a big thieving machine that gambles with other people's lives and livelihoods to make a quick buck. Why pick on them particularly? Yes, they deserve it, but no more than the company executive that moves production from the UK to China because labour is cheap and the workers can't organize or fight for their rights."

These quotes comes from http://www.blog.co.uk/search.php?word=short-selling+john-sentamu&category=tagpost.

The EU to the rescue

The leaders of the European G4 (France, Great Britain, Germany and Italy) which in itself is a negation of the EU, have been unable to define a common strategy or policies to fight the international financial crisis on a European level.

Are you surprised ? I am not.

Wherever the EU is not needed, it is present and active, for instance with detailed and unending regulations in totally unimportant fields.

Wherever it is needed - that is wherever it could have real value added - it is not to be found (international crisis, common defence) and so on. One possible (just possible) exception : the euro. An exageration ? Barely.

Very busy busybodies indeed !

I found it !

The English text of John Gray's article :

"A shattering moment in America's fall from power. The global financial crisis will see the US falter in the same way the Soviet Union did when the Berlin Wall came down. The era of American dominance is over."

"Our gaze might be on the markets melting down, but the upheaval we are experiencing is more than a financial crisis, however large. Here is a historic geopolitical shift, in which the balance of power in the world is being altered irrevocably. The era of American global leadership, reaching back to the Second World War, is over."

The fall of the US

John Gray's pityless analysis of the fall of the American empire, as reported in my paper.

See : http://www.standaard.be/Krant/Tekst/Artikel.aspx?artikelId=H921BDEB&date=20081004&demo=False.

Unfortunately, I haven't yet been able to locate the original article in English.

Kunst

Mooi gebaar, zeker en vast. Daarenboven is kunst zonder enige twijfel de allereerste prioriteit in de wegsmeltende katholieke gemeenschap ...

Solid ?

Budget

All of a sudden the starting point for the preparation of the Belgian budget has changed drastically for the worse. The deficit this year might rise to 1.4 bio and to 6.3 bio (1.7 % of GDP) in 2009 - and these are not the highest numbers floating around ... Just a reminder : the 2009 budget should show a 0.3 % surplus.

But don't panic, the minister calls these numbers premature. Not to worry ! Apparently, the bankers are not the only ones who heve been caught with their pants down.

A couple of days ago, a nephew of mine said that the introduction of the euro had been a catastrophy as prices have been rising very fast indeed. I told him there were some good points too - without the euro Belgium might have known a couple of additional devaluations. And these might have provoked even worse inflationary trends.

Savers need saviour

In Belgium, savings deposits are guaranteed up to 20000 €. That is a crying bloody shame, but no one talked about it : banks couldn't go bust anyway. Now the federation of banks wants to raise that amount to 60000 €. The proposal is presented as a kind of noble gesture. It still a bloody shame, and mostly to the benefit of the banks.

By the way, the rescue operations of Fortis and Dexia were presented as being needed to guarantee the savings of the clients of those banks. The government now has been courageous enough to say that the danger to the banks is not over yet, and that the protection of the savers is their first preocuppation. Or words to that effect. No guarantee at all there.

Mark my words, if and when a significant loss on savings were required to get the big banks out of the woods, that loss would most probably be acceptable to the government. At least if it happens when no immediate elections are in view.

Fortunately, we have elections all the time in this country.

Did aliens destroy Atlantis ?

Of course they did. See http://www.bridlingtonfreepress.co.uk/letters?articleid=3933043.

And ten tens of thousands of years, maybe even millions of years, later, they came back and destroyed the international financial and banking system too. Our poor greedy bankers and speculators have nothing whatsoever to do with the present crisis. They are upright and serious capitalists and conservatives.

The aliens have done it. That is also the reason why our Belgian household gods (politicians and bankers) do not want an examination of the acts of these upright, martyred citizens. They have been adequately punished with their 6 or 7 number bonusses.

But for the believers among you : bankers, speculators, and I hope politicians too, will get their come uppance in their next life (or in the next world). They will be reborn without a cent to their name and without the hope of ever earning a dime. They won't even be able to steal an euro. Hell will be the place with inlimited greed but without money and without the tiniest shred of individual power.

To us those circumstances might indicate paradise, to them it will be worse than eternal fire.

From the writings of the prophet Paulus the contrarian (Cappadocia 3th century BC), recently discovered by one of his siblings in the approximately 70th to 75th generation.

Can a bail-out succeed ?

"Over the last 20 years the US has made a collection of serious mistakes that may yet prove fatal. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the US government launched a policy of world hegemony for which it lacked the means. The US government permitted much of its manufacturing base to be located offshore to the point of even being dependent on imports for its military capability. The US government deregulated the financial sector and permitted the rise of new highly leveraged financial instruments whose failures currently threaten the US with economic collapse. "

An interesting article on http://www.counterpunch.org/roberts10022008.html.
