June 8 1914

Ninety-four years ago my mother was born in Okegem, the second child of five, and only daughter of Joannes Franciscus Neukermans (Okegem 1886 - 1961) and Maria Antonia De Vidts (Pamel 1885 - Okegem 1949).

Neither her parents, nor herself, could have foreseen what a difficult life hers would be ; most of it was signed by illness and infirmity. But she had my father, a devoted saint and her staunch, unwavering support, and she had her faith.

Even in the worst circumstances, she remained optimistic and full if interest for the problems of others. She never recovered fully from the premature death of my father in 1980 : that man really has given his life for his family and was - is - an exemple to us all.

I consider myself blessed to have had two such exceptional parents. I pray for them every day, as I am sure they do for me, who needs it so much more.
