Ireland

Ireland's voters are deciding today whether to support the European Union reform treaty in a referendum being watched closely across the continent.

A majority "no" verdict from Ireland's 2.8 million registered voters could doom the painstakingly negotiated Lisbon Treaty for all 27 E.U. nations and their 495 million citizens. The complex, often unreadable document — a follow-up to the failed constitution that French and Dutch voters shot down in 2005 — would reshape E.U. institutions and powers in line with the bloc's rapid expansion.

As a contrarian, and an opponent to the often autocratic decisions of the EU Commission, I sincerely hope the Irish will vote no. But, as we say in Flemish : "Dromen staat vrij".

The Irish Justice Minister says unofficial vote counts show that the EU Lisbon treaty has been rejected. Well done Ireland !

Europa baalt zoals het ons al vele lange jaren doet balen.

Een mooie droom toen ik 18 was - nu een onoverzichtelijke bureaucratie met duizenden overbodige tentakels. En de moeder van alle uitvluchten voor de nationale politici.

Don't you misunderstand me. We need Europe, we desperately need it. But we do not need the bureaucratic big brother-ish lunacy that has been created over the years out of the ivory towers in Brussels, Strasbourg and elsewhere.
