Geneanet

I am a daily visitor and a privileged member of Geneanet, which has grown into an enormous genealogical database, with almost 185 mio names on file. I have found some valuable information in there as well as some tracks for further research.

The advantage is that the databank is so huge that you have to be very unlucky not to find anything of interest to you ;

the weakness is that the bank is not really controlled or monitored : everyone can put anything in it, and copying (multiplication of data) is rampant. When you find the same descendance twice, that is no confirmation of its correctness ; chances are the second just copied the first.

And then you read the language used in the forums ! A significant number of participants can or will not write correctly, or formulate a question correctly. I sometimes wonder how much credit I can give to data assembled by people who do not even take the trouble to write a legible sentence.

But overall, what a fantastic resource !
