The final defeat of the evil and criminal empire of the raising sun and the end of the second world war. I see no reason to use capitals in that sentence ...

On August 14 1945, Japan sent word that it would accept the Allies' terms. The message reached President Truman in mid-afternoon and he told the public early that evening.
Explosive celebrations followed immediately as Americans and their Allies rejoiced that the horrible prospects of continued war appeared to be at an end. The Instrument of Surrender was signed on board of the USS Missouri, anchored in Tokyo Bay, on September 2 1945.

62 years later we remember all those who were murdered by two of the most evil empires the world ever saw : nazi Germany and the empire of the rising sun. And we remember with gratitude the additional millions who gave their lives or health to crush those monstrous regimes.
