Moses

History repeats itself. We are reliving the story of Moses and the golden calf and the worship of the Mammon.

Wealth is our god. But this time, Moses isn't going to come down from the mountain to smash the golden calf to pieces. This time, the mountain - i.e. the economic system itself - is going to come down upon us and crush us. Greed and unbearable levels of debt will see to that.

If not, galloping inflation and war also are good problem solvers.

In the present circumstances, it really is extremely difficult to remain optimistic about the future of mankind.

Free market again

The Philippine catholic bishops have backed a government decision to prohibit kidney transplants on foreign patients as part of a bid to regulate sales of kidneys and other human organs. This should put an end to the illegal sale and traffic of human organs.

Foreigners are reportedly willing to pay $A 2,500-5,000 for each donated organ, a possible explanation for the influx of foreign patients to the country for medical tourism.

From 2006 to 2007 alone, at least 200,000 patients from countries like the United States and its territories, South Pacific nations, Canada, Korea, and Japan have come to visit the Philippines to undergo various organ transplant operations.

Organ transplantation for foreigners has been suspended since January as the Department of Health worked on drafting the recently promulgated order.

Another proof of the scandalous consequences of free market capitalism. Health care never ever should be submitted to the laws of supply and demand, and to greed. But, unfortunately, even in our own countries, we see free market sharks taking over ...

High time we put a stop to that evolution ! As long as our economic system is not changed, and that is not to happen tomorrow or the day after, private enterprise will keep focusing on profitable growth, and that can only be to the detriment of the sick. Is that so difficult to understand ?

April 30 1865

Franciscus Asselman died in Okegem, where he had been born on September 24 1769. In 1794 he married Maria Anna Geeroms (Impegem 1768 - Okegem 1843) with whom he had seven children.

Andreas Asselman (Okegem 1795 - 1875) was the oldest. He had five children with his first wife Van der Speeten Alexandrina (Okegem 1795 - 1831) and, to the best of my knowledge, none with the second. The third was Catharina Asselman (Okegem 1823 - 1892), the grandmother of my maternal grandfather Joannes Franciscus Neukermans (Okegem 1886 - 1961).

April 30 1768

Petronella Stockmans died in Pamel on that day. She had been born there on September 3 1698 and married Joannes Janssens - also Jans - (born ca 1700 - died in Pamel in 1770) in 1723.

Joanna Maria Janssens (Pamel 1729 - 1790) was the fourth of six children. We wrote about her a couple of posts ago.

Logica

Uit "Commentaar - Na de index ook nog de opslag" in De Standaard van vandaag :

"We zouden geld kunnen vrijmaken door de loodzware kosten van onze talrijke overheden te verlagen, maar daarmee is eigenlijk niemand bezig." Een waarheid als een koe.

Maar een paar zinnen verder :

"België heeft zijn beste periode gekend toen overheid, vakbonden en werkgevers, in de jaren vijftig en zestig, een gezamenlijk plan hadden om de productiviteit te verhogen en daarmee de sociale vooruitgang te betalen. Zonder gelijkaardige plannen - nu te sluiten op het niveau van de deelstaten - zal er op termijn voor niemand nog een serieus stuk koek zijn."

Soms kan ik echt niet meer mee, maar dat zal wel aan mij liggen.

En over dat gezamenlijk plan zou ik ook nog een boom kunnen opzetten ...

Slotendries park

On Sunday morning, after Mass, I was enjoying my walk in Slotendries park under the fumes of Ghent harbor. A nice walk when there are not too many joggers and dogs on or off leashes about. I saw a very thick old tree which had been cut off at a height of about 1 meter.

Out of sheer curiosity, I bent over, and indeed, the interior had completely rotted away : there was just a rim of 10 - 15 cm thick still standing around an empty core. But down in the hole I saw three rather big greenish blue eggs. I am no specialist but there are scores of ducks in the vicinity, so I supposed they were duck eggs.

But how are those small ducklings ever going to scale those vertical sides ? Maybe they had been abandoned already. Maybe some sick joker stole them from a real nest and put them in there.

For once, I regretted that I can no longer be bothered with photography. I have been a renegade for too long.

By the way there are three restaurants in the immediate vicinity. For what it's worth, my personal advice is : don't go there. The first one has good food but is too expensive and run by a grumpy guy, almost as a favor to his customers. Fortunately you don't see him that often. The second looks more like a big farm - eathouse ; the food is average and in summer waiting can be hellishly long. The third is beyond comment : order a double expresso there and you get two big cups of coffee. I kid you not.

But then, don't listen to me : do exactly what you want. You may need the experience.

... Pfaff ? Nee, veel erger : De Decker !! Ik begin stilaan ongerust te worden want ik sta mijlenver van, en recht tegenover zijn ultra-liberale standpunten. Maar toch - soms, heel soms - zegt hij schijnbaar zinnige dingen, zoals in "Draaideurcriminelen" in De Standaard van vandaag.

Dat Paul Scheffer acht jaar geleden al zei dat het multiculturalisme de grootste bedreiging is voor de maatschappelijke vrede, zie je niet alleen hier maar, met verschillende actoren, ook in de USA, die niet echt meer de smeltkroes is die ze verondersteld worden te zijn. Ook daar wordt meer en meer in aparte hoekjes gekookt.

Maar De Decker citeert ook een zin die mij echt trof, een doordenkertje van de Iraans-Nederlands professor Afshin Ellian, die beweert dat een multiculturele samenleving alleen maar kan gedijen in een monoculturele rechtstaat. Maar dan moeten de regels en de wetten van die rechtstaat worden toegepast en afgedwongen.

April 29 1790

Joanna Maria Janssens died in Pamel where she had been born on October 12 1729. She married Augustinus Van Eeckhoudt (Pamel 1727 - 1775) and remarried after his death.

Petronella Van Eeckhoudt ( Pamel 1771 - 1828), named in the previous blog, was their daughter. She was the youngest of their seven children.

And with this article, I finally am up to date again with my genealogy posts !

April 29 1724

Ferdinandus Van der Sleyen was born in Pamel, the sixth of eight children of Gasparus (Pamel 1686 - 1749) and Catharina Huylenbroeck (Pamel ca 1685 - 1751).

In 1751 Ferdinandus married Joanna Vernaillen (Impegem 1725 - Pamel 1791). They had five children and Ferdinandus died on January 30 1810.

Their third child was Michael (Pamel 1758 - 1827) who married Petronella Van Eeckhoudt (Pamel 1771 - 1828), a neighbour.

Their daughter Maria Elisabeth Van der Sleyen (Pamel 1811 - 1860) married Joannes De Vidts, named in the previous post and oftentimes before.

April 27 1838

Maria Elisabeth Van Lierde died in Pamel, where she had been born a miller's daughter on February 28 1790. She married Joannes Franciscus De Vidts in 1809. They had eight children including Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1811 - 1881), mentioned a few posts ago.

April 26 1758

Bernardus Broeckaert was born in Wetteren, a son to Joannes Josephus Broeckaert (Wetteren 1726 - 1760) and to Maria Livina Matthijs, born in Wetteren ca 1730.

Bernardus married Maria Livina Venneman (Schelderode 1763 - Serskamp 1825) and died in Serskamp on January 10 1802.

Bernardus and Maria Livina were the parents of Eugenius Broeckaert (Serskamp 1792 - 1846) whom we met a few posts ago.

April 26 1678

Anna Van Boterdael died in Gooik. She had been married to Joannes Appelmans, who died in Gooik in 1693.

Their daughter Catharina (Maria) Appelmans (Gooik 1656 - 1733) married twice.

-- Her first husband was Judocus Timmermans (Gooik 1649 - 1694), with whom she had two children. I descend from their son Joannes Timmermans (Gooik 1686 - Meerbeke 1769).

-- Her second husband was Adrianus Bellemans (Gooik 1670 - 1752), whom she married in 1694. Again she had two children. I descend from their daughter Maria Bellemans (Gooik 1696 - 1784), who married Nicolaus Van Eeckhoudt (Gooik ca 1686 - 1770).

Brussels Airlines

Lufthansa aast op Brussels Airlines. Nogal gemeen geformuleerd : das Vaterland muss grosser sein. Dat zit er nog altijd een beetje in, vrees ik. Ik heb jaren geleden zelf iets vergelijkbaars meegemaakt.

Een kennis, een oud officier in het ABL, zei het me verleden week nog : wat een paar generaties geleden met de wapens niet lukte, lukt nu wel met de centen.

Decennia lang ben ik ervan overtuigd geweest dat het Verdrag van Rome de reddingsboei van Europa had betekend. De laatste jaren ben ik daar niet meer zo zeker van : ik weet niet echt of de voordelen nog wel opwegen tegen de nadelen. Daar ben ik echt nog niet uit.

Maar misschien was het, zonder onze Europese big brother, veel erger geweest. En dan nog ... bygones are bygones, en as is verbrande turf.

April 24 1676

Cornelius Van Nieuwenhove died in Pamel. He was the first spouse of Catharina Gansemans, who died in Pamel in 1697.

They had four children. I descend from their daughter Catharina (Pamel 1663 - 1743) who married Petrus De Vidts (Pamel 1663 - 1743).

We met them a couple of posts ago. See "April 20 1627".

April 24 1761

Maria Anna De Vleeschauwer died in Meerbeke, where she had been born on June 11 1683.

She married Joannes Timmermans (Gooik 1686 - Meerbeke 1769).

They had eight children at least - as I stated before my research in the Timmermans family is far from complete - and I descend from their son Nicolaes (Meerbeke 1711 -1808) and his first wife Petronella Van Eesbeke (Meerbeke 1706 - 1772), with whom he had six children at least.

Nicolaes not only lived a very long life : if my data are correct - and they probably are - he remarried when he was about 61 and had an additional 6 children with his second wife Berlindis Du Mongh (Meerbeke 1745 - 1814).

The further line has been described before : see the post "November 1 1808".

April 24 1693

Adrianus Van de Perre died in Okegem. His widow Christina Gansemans survived him for 22 years but fell on very hard times. We know that she had to be supported by the "armentafel" in 1712-1713.

Adrianus and Christina had four children.The line has been described in the post for "February 7 1642".

Why do I bother ?

Why do I bother commenting on anything except my genealogy ? It's a question I keep asking myself.

Frankly, I don't know. I suppose I just can't help it !

And I can't stand sheer stupidity and greed. There aren't that many really stupid oafs around, but boy, there's no lack of greedy ones !

April 23 1740

Anna Van den Waterloop died in Okegem and was buried two days later. She was born in Okegem on May 20 1662 and married Joannes Asselman (Okegem ca 1663 - 1723) with whom she had seven children.

I descend from two of their children :

-- from Anna Asselman (Okegem ca 1690 - 1784) who married Joannes De Mol (Okegem 1699 - 1777),

-- and from Joannes Asselman (Okegem 1692 - 1732) and his second wife Anna Straetman (Okegem 1691 - 1759).

April 23 1666

Marcus Schandevijl Sr was killed by soldiers in Ledeberg. In 1645 he had married Barbara Walckiers, who died in Pamel in 1670. They had three children : Maria, born in Pamel in 1655, was the youngest.

April 20 1627

Judocus De Vidts was born in Pamel, where he died on July 5 1694. He was the second of probably seven children of Paschasius De Vidts (Pamel ca 1595 - 1656) and Joanna De Beer (ca 1598 - Pamel 1673). He became a meisenier in 1669 and lived on the Kwinkeleer.

Judocus married Maria Van der Kelen in 1650, and they had 10 children, of whom about one in three died young. Petrus De Vidts (Pamel 1655 - 1726) was number four and a meisenier like his father. He was an alderman (schepen) of Pamel.

Petrus married twice and had three children with his first spouse (twice a widow) and three with his second wife Catharina Van Nieuwenhove (Pamel 1663 - 1743).

His youngest child was Judocus (Pamel 1703 - 1750) who was the first husband of Catharina Theresia Van Cauwelaert "pachteres" (Pamel 1729 - 1805). They had two children, but Catharina had another thirteen kids with her second husband, Joannes Josephus Kestens (Pamel 1719 - 1778). Judocus too was a meisenier.

The further line has been described a couple of times before. Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1811 - 1881), my great-great-grandfather on my moher's side and my great-great-great-grandfather on my father's side was the great-great-grandson of that Judocus.

Reform of the state

A fool-proof three point strategy :

1. Demand the reform of the state on the basis of the dogm that what we do ourselves, we will do so much better - never mind that you can't prove that dogm in a thousand years. It is a matter of belief.

2. Boycott the state wherever you can, in the legal, the executive, the judicial and every other imaginable field. Use all the creativity you have, don't mind dishonesty and outright lies.

3. Then demand reform (even abolition) of the state because clearly it is not working correctly, if at all.

Milieu

Uit Kerknet :

It looks like justice in Belgium is really falling apart. Since friday last, 15 minors in Brussels have been released because there was no place to put them in what we call a "closed instititution" (kind of a prison for minors). Over the last couple of years, parts of our capital have become "no go" areas". But who - besides the average guy in the street - cares about safety and security ?

Caravaggio

During my recent trip to Rome I was captivated by the light in the paintings of Caravaggio, a name I had long forgotten.

The light in his work is dramatically sublime ... I looked on the net for a reproduction of the conversion of Saul on the road to Damascus, which hangs in Santa Maria del Populo in Rome. I didn't find a single decent one. The one I selected is the best, but it still stinks. The books I bought didn't have it right either.

There are other fantastic Caravaggio's in the nearby Galleria Borghese, a really exceptional museum on a human scale. Do not miss them when in Rome !

Caravaggio was a contemporary of our bombastic Rubens, but I prefer Caravaggio every single day.

Giving 100 %

This is a strictly mathematical view point...

Elisabeth Wynant died in Denderhoutem, where she had been born on August 10 1698. In 1719, she married Egidius Goossens (Denderhoutem 1695 - 1762).

April 13 1782

Anna Van der Meeren died in Pamel (approximately 95 years old ?). She had six children with her first husband Judocus De Doncker, who died in Pamel in 1732.

April 13 1726

Joanna Maria De Vidts was born in Pamel, a daughter to Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1651 - 1724) and Maria De Vleminck, who died in Pamel in 1716.

In 1711, Joanna Maria married a blacksmith, Joannes Baveghems (Meerbeke 1681 - Pamel 1737).

April 13 1649

Catharina Van Overstraeten, daughter of Arnoldus and Catharina Piret, died in Pamel. She was married to Guillielmus Walckiers (who was born in Pamel and died there in 1638).

They had five children. Barbara Walckiers, who died in Pamel in 1670, married Marcus Sr Schandevijl in Pamel in 1645. Marcus, who may have come from Outer, was killed (murdered) by soldiers in Ledeberg in 1666.

Their daughter Maria Schandevijl (Pamel 1655 - 1734) was the mother of Catharina Huylenbroeck (Pamel ca 1685 - 1751), whom we just remembered. See the post : "April 12 1699".

Rich, richer, richest

According to the National Bank, the average Belgian is richer than ever.

De zoektocht van de federale regering naar een nieuwe topman voor de belastingdiensten zit in een impasse. Uit de selectieproeven van Selor, het selectiebureau van de overheid, is gebleken dat niemand geschikt is om voorzitter van de federale overheidsdienst Financiën te worden, meldt De Tijd.

Gelukkig moet Selor de minister niet kiezen. Stel je voor, zeg !

Chateau Neercanne

Vanavond was ik uitgenodigd op het afscheidsdiner van een ex-collega op chateau Neercanne, het "enige terassenkasteel" in de Nederlanden op de Belgisch-Nederlandse grens.

Ik heb het genoegen gehad in mijn vorig leven enkele keren in dat restaurant te mogen vertoeven, en het blijven aangename herinneringen, zowel wat betreft het gezelschap, het eten als de betoverende omgeving.

Ik had ook een bijzonder goede band met de collega die nu op zijn beurt met pensioen gaat. Hij was een echte globetrotter, een onuitputtelijke bron van sterke verhalen. Met hem heb ik ook enkele avonturen in de VS en Mexico beleefd. Toch heb ik afgezegd. Bygones are bygones, en acht jaar is een lange tijd.

Ik ben nooit een liefhebber van afscheidparties geweest (ook niet voor mezelf - ik denk dat bepaalde personen op de personeelsafdeling van mijn vroegere werkgever daar nog kunnen over meespreken) : ik vind die net iets te artificieel, zoals ook verjaardags- en nieuwjaarsfeesten. Old soldiers never die, they just fade away ...

Maar, alla, dit is waarschijnlijk een van de allerlaatste keren dat ik uitgenodigd geworden ben, want de mensen die ik goed kende zijn nu bijna allen op rust.

Een gevariëerd slaatje uit uit de krant van vandaag :

-- veroordeelden met een celstraf tot drie jaar gaan door de overbevolking niet naar de gevangenis ;

-- de gemeente Terneuzen wil zelf cannabis gaan kweken ;

-- het drugsbeleid (in Antwerpen) is te repressief ;

-- vijftien jaar voor vier boeven (de krant schrijft boefjes) die man blind sloegen, en, natuurlijk : "De uitspraak veroorzaakte heel wat commotie bij het publiek, dat voornamelijk bestond uit familieleden van de veroordeelden. Verscheidene vrouwen begonnen te huilen en een zus van ..." (een van de boeven) "werd onwel." Wat is tenslotte een blinde min of meer ? Maar vier boeven die opgeborgen worden, dat is pas een drama !

-- Amerikaanse winkels rantsoeneren rijst (want winst gaat toch voor alles, of niet soms ?) ;

-- Jeroen Brouwers is verontwaardigd omdat hij van de opwaardering van de prijs der Nederlandse letteren niets zal merken op zijn bankrekening ... enz, enz ...

Basic instinct

Director Paul Verhoeven of "Turks Fruit", "Soldaat van Oranje", "Robocop" and "Basic Instinct", mostly infamous flicks, wil publish a revisionist biography of Jesus in September, following more than 20 years of "research".

The libraries are already full of the fruits of this kind of "research" - I have a small collection of them in my own library. They are really fun to read, because often they are plain stupid and burning with ill-will and blind hate.

April 12 1400

Sweder III van Abcoude - of Dutch extraction - lord of Gaasbeek, Putten en Strijen, died in Radda, Tuscany, Italy on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He was a descendant (20 generations or thereabouts) of Charlemagne.

He was a heavyweight in regional history. Legend has it that he was a ferocious land robber and the instigator of the murder, in 1388, of the Brussels folk hero, Everaert tSerclaes, whose momument on the Grand'Place is world famous (millions of tourists have polished his brass arm).

According to other sources, Sweder was not the bully depicted in many a story, but a devout and just man. Be that as it may, the Brussels militia burnt his castle at Gaasbeek (yes, that's the one) to the ground in vengeance for the murder of Everaert.

Sweder had a bastard daughter Clementia van Gaesbeke, who was born ca 1365. Clementia died young but lived to see the fifteenth century.

She married Jan van de Voorde, born ca 1365, and their daughter Margriete (ca 1385 - ca 1444) married Joannes Pipenpoy (ca 1385 - Brussel ca 1467).

Four generations later (one Willem and three Jan Pipenpoy's) Maria Pipenpoy was born . She married Zeger Van Cutsem (Sint Martens Lennik ca 1620 - 1681).

From there on, the story has been written before (see various posts including : "January 20 1552").

I shall write more extensively about the (in)famous Sweder in a later post. A lot of material can be found in regional history books and on the net.

I shall also go into more detail into the Pipenpoy family at a later date.

April 12 1699

Adrianus Huylenbroeck, born in St Kwintens Lennik, died in Pamel on that day. He was married to Maria Schandevijl (Pamel 1655 - 1734).

The eldest of their six children, Catharina Huylenbroeck (Pamel ca 1685 - 1751) married Gasparus Van der Sleyen (Pamel 1686 - 1749).

Ferdinandus (Pamel 1727 - 1810) was the sixth of their eight children.

His son Michael Van der Sleyen (Pamel 1758 - 1827) married Petronella Van den Eeckhoudt, whom we just met in the previous post.

April 12 1727

Augustinus Van Eeckhoudt was born in Gooik, a son to Nicolaus (Gooik ca 1686 - 1770) and Maria Bellemans (Gooik 1696 - 1784). In 1757 he married Joanna Maria Janssens (Pamel 1729 - 1790).

They had seven children, of which Petronella Van Eeckhoudt (Pamel 1771 - 1828) was the youngest.

Petronella was the mother of Maria Elisabeth Van der Sleyen (Pamel 1811 - 1860), oftentimes named before in this blog.

Once more, Maria Elisabeth was my great-great-grandmother on my mother's side and my great-great-great-grandmother on my father's side.

Not amused

Our minister of foreign affairs is "not amused" by the attitude of the Congolese president during his recent visit to Kinshasa. Three ministers of the Belgian government have been treated as naughty schoolboys, or so it appears.

So what ? I have not been amused by the attitude of our arrogant minister of foreign affairs for years and years now. That hasn't changed a thing either.

De zeven hoofdzonden

De titel lijkt nu voorlopig toe te behoren aan het beruchte weekblad Humo, waarvan ik jaren geleden, dat moet ik tot mijn diepe schaamte bekennen, een verwoed en trouw lezer geweest ben. Vandaag, achtentwintig jaar geleden, op een ijzig koude en winderige donderdag, werd mijn dierbare vader begraven met een uitvaartdienst om 10u30' in de Sint Amanduskerk in Sint Amandsberg.

Er was zeer veel volk, want een groot deel van de uitgebreide familie leefde nog, en er waren ook een pak oud collega's. Dat is altijd een (schrale) troost.

Het is bijzonder spijtig dat zijn kleinkinderen hem niet langer hebben mogen kennen. Ze hebben er geen flauw benul van wie en wat ze gemist hebben.

Hij ruste in vrede.

April 12 1827

Maria Josina Covens died in Pamel where she had been born on November 8 1759. In 1782, she married miller Joannes Josephus Van Lierde (Pamel 1746 - 1811). Joannes became a meisenier in 1784.

Maria Josina was the youngest of twelve and had eleven children herself. Number five was Maria Elisabeth Van Lierde (Pamel 1790 - 1838) who married Joannes Franciscus De Vidts (Pamel 1784 - 1839).

The pipes are calling

Global warming may be happening. It is not a proven fact yet but an article of faith with many scientists, and no one, absolutely no one, knows where it will lead us in the long term.

That is not a reason not to prepare for the possibility of it happening - our way of life is totally insane anyway - but I don't want to be forced into silence and blind belief for reasons of political correctness only.

April 21 1913

Kamiel Neukermans was born in Okegem, the eldest child of Joannes Franciscus (Okegem 1886 - 1961) and Maria Antonia De Vidts (Pamel 1885 - Okegem 1949). He was the eldest brother of my mother.

I remember my mother telling me that he was a carpenter. He was a very devout person and a founder of the KAJ in Okegem. He died on May 10 1936 as an indirect result of an accident during his military service. I thought I had written about him before, but I can't locate the text.

Building a pontoon on the Meuse river, he was hit in the chest by a steel girder, fell into the ice cold water and contracted tuberculosis. He spent a long time (about a year ?) in a sanatorium in Lustin and came home apparently healed.

One day, he went to mass and catched a cold. He relapsed and did not survive.

My parents met on the day of his funeral.

One sided tolerance

The small piazza on the Aventine where the door is located and where the knights of Malta have their world headquarters, is probably one of the most peaceful spots in Rome.

April 20 1980

In the very early hours of the morning of April 20 1980, my dearly beloved and sainted father passed away in his hospital bed. He had been unconscious for a couple of hours. I still feel serenely happy that I could be with him in his last minutes - my brother had left minutes before to fetch my mother and sister.

He had a hard life, a very hard life of toil and sorrow, but he remained totally devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren. His last months were painful, but his death was peaceful. Thank God for that.

My father was a simple man, who lived by his principles and taught by his exemple. His generosity was boundless as was his understanding. He was a real hero. He was my hero. The pain from the separation will remain allways, but he will never really die as long as he lives in our hearts, and I am sure that he has gone to his eternal reward - to a blissfull happiness that never was his in this here valley of tears.

Closet catholic

According to the Washington Post there might be a closet catholic in the White House. Daniel Burke thinks that President Bush might be pulling a Tony Blair. Burke tells of the Catholic based culture that rules the west wing and some other lingering suspicions.

Gulp ! I sincerely hope not !

It is well known that most journalists "don't do God" and do not have a deep and reliable knowledge of specific religions, so they often talk out of the top of their hat. Ahum.

Bush may have some policies which could be considered conform to catholic pro-life teaching. But I see nothing catholic in the bulk of his policies, far from it !!

Palliatieve zorg

Volgens een hoogleraar oncoloog zijn palliatieve zorg en euthanasie geen concurrenten, en heeft de legalisering van euthanasie als resultaat gehad dat er ook een betere palliatieve zorg is. Voor mij ruikt dat naar een sofisme.

"In 99 procent van de wereld denkt men dat legale euthanasie en palliatieve zorg elkaars tegengestelde zijn. Voor België en Nederland, de enige landen waar euthanasie legaal is, klopt dat alvast niet."

Om in dezelfde taal verder te gaan : 99 % van de wereld heeft het verkeerd voor. Wat zijn wij toch gelukkige mensen met zo'n keuze !

Capitalatwork

In de krant van dit weekend staat een annonce van Capitalatwork - Investment partners, een open brief aan meneer Trichet, in een taaltje dat mij in de jaren zeventig, toen ik het jaarverslag van mijn werkgever vertaalde, zeer eigen was.

Ik noemde het vertaald Frans en dacht dat het intussen al lang uitgestorven was. Nee dus. Zoals een directeur van een Nederlands filiaal reageerde op mijn vertaalwerk : het is nog altijd geen nederlands, maar het kan er wel voor doorgaan. De tekst bestaat inderdaad uit nederlandse woorden, maar de manier waarop de zinnen aan mekaar gesmeed zijn geeft mij een onaangenaam "déjà vu" effect.

Holebi

Liefst 44 % van de Vlaamse jongens en 23 % van de Vlaamse meisjes heeft een neerbuigende houding ten opzichte van holibi's. "We zitten dus met een onmiskenbaar maatschappelijk probleem dat aangepakt moet worden."

Television

Fifteen years ago, when I visited the States, I was a big fan of most things, but I hated American breakfeast, American coffee and American television.

It is a remarkable feat of American marketeering that, once some people had discovered what a decent coffee tasted like, they managed to build a coffee imperium, which I will not name here. Frasier was one of their good customers.

It is a remarkable feat of American "cultural" imperialism that European tv in general, and Flemish tv in particular, have fallen to an all time low of crass commercialism, compared to which American tv of the eighties was the summum of good taste.

In Flanders, private VTM is yapping at the heels of public market leader Eén. And people claim to be surprised. I am not. For years and years Eén has tried to be a conform copy of the tasteless pulp of VTM, but, as is often the case, the original wins out in the end.

België anders

Eindelijk wat tegengas tegen de beruchte, separatistiche Warande-groep. Hoewel de nieuwe, nogal "elitaire" groep weeral focust op de onderneming en haar environment - en bij mij dus automatisch licht verdacht is - zit ze toch op het goede spoor.

Een efficiënter België, maar niet ten koste van een zekere solidariteit.

Nicolas Saverijs : "Ik geloof helemaal niet dat ... " een autonomer Vlaanderen " ... efficiënter zal zijn en minder zal kosten. Wat er wel waar is, is dat de Sociale Zekerheid beter moet worden opgevolgd. In Wallonië is er een zekere normvervaging wat betreft misbruiken. Dat is wat het publiek debat in Vlaanderen ook aanwakkert. België als merk verkoopt goed, Brussel ook. Maar geen kat in het buitenland is geïnteresseerd in Wallonië of Vlaanderen."

En onze special forces (60 operationele posten), de crème de la crème van ons ABL, recruteert nu ook burgers. Ben ik weer de neige die dat nogal tragi-komisch vind ?

Interculturaliteit

Multiculturaliteit is niet genoeg meer voor onze politiek correcte hogepriesters. Een of andere stichting, waarvan ik de representatitiveit niet kan beoordelen, heeft twaalf - amaï, wat een reuzeopdracht - leerboeken gescreend op de manier waarop ze diversiteit voorstellen en op hun (on)bevooroordeeldheid.

"Uit de resultaten blijkt nu dat er geen sprake is van flagrante inbreuken. Wel bezondigen handboeken zich nog te vaak aan het reproduceren van de maatschappelijke normen : het 'gewone' gezin van vader en moeder met twee kinderen, de arme zwartjes, de Vlaamse voornamen." En zoals iedereen nu intussen wel al weet : monoculturaliteit is een val: in mijn verouderd taalgebruik zou ik moeten gewagen van een doodzonde ! Waarden en normen zijn maatschappelijke vooroordelen, deugen niet en moeten kost wat kost doorbroken worden.

Arm, arm Vlaanderen ... de meeste van onze hooggeleerde experten weten wel heel goed wat moet verdwijnen maar hebben geen oog voor wat er in de plaats komt.

Dotaties

De twaalfde persoon in lijn voor de troonopvolging doet weer van zich spreken.

Hoogtijd dat de dotaties beperkt worden tot de koning en zijn troonopvolger. De overige leden van de koninlijke familie moeten dan maar gaan werken zoals iedere andere "onderdaan".

Ik lees ook tot mijn stomme verbazing (maar eigenlijk weer niet) dat de "captain of industry" monsieur le vicomte Davignon op vraag van het koninklijk huis het financiele huishouden van nummer twaalf op orde gezet heeft.

Ik hoop uit de grond van mijn hart dat die kapitein nu eindelijk eens van het publieke forum terugtreedt om van een "welverdiende" rust te genieten. Meer kan ik hier niet over kwijt zonder echt grof te worden ...

Famous

Probably the most famous keyhole in Rome. It sits in the door of the knights of Malta on the Aventine. You don't know why it is famous ? Maybe I'll tell you ... later.

A clue : the paint has been scraped away by the thousands of cameras which have been pushed against it. And the door is opened for VIPs only.

I came home from Rome, Italy, in the wee hours of this morning. Satisfied but tired and too busy to start blogging immediately. But I'll be back soon.

April 12 1853

Felix De Vidts, the father of my maternal grandmother, was born in Pamel. He was the last child in a series of eight for Joannes De Vidts (Pamel 1811 - 1881) and Maria Elisabeth Van der Sleyen (Pamel 1811 - 1860).

In 1882, he married Blondina Muylaert (Denderhoutem 1849 - Pamel 1942). It would be interesting to know how those two met. Denderhoutem isn't that far from Pamel, but I don't think there were too many contacts between those villages, except maybe for (distant) family relationships.

Felix and Blondina had five children :

Maria Adelina (Pamel 1883 - 1883, less than two months old) ;
Maria Antonia (Pamel 1885 - 1890), my maternal grandmother ;
Adelina (Pamel 1887 - 1890) ;
Adeline (Pamel 1890 - 1981), who continued to live in the parental home in the Piezelstraat, and of which offspring ;
Petrus Joannes (Pamel 1893 - 1922), who died a bachelor.

When Felix came to visit his daughter, my grandmother, he liked a little drop, and sometimes more than one. My mother told me that, once at least, he left my grandparent's house close to the windmill, but came back fifteen or twenty minutes later, out of breath and panting that he couldn't cross the Dender river because the "framassons" (free masons) were dancing there and had threatened him. My grandfather then had to accompany him part or all of the way, which wasn't that far after all.

My mother also told me that Felix couldn't read or write but was very sharp with numbers. But I vaguely remember to have seen an official paper to which he had signed his name, which of course is no proof in se that he was literate.

Felix died in Pamel on June 8 1940 ... old enough to have seen the beginning of the second world war. If he were to come back, he wouldn't recognise the world, or the environment in which he lived and which was so familiar to him.

When I look back to my own youth, it is unbelievable how very much and incredibly fast the world has changed. It most certainly changed more between 1940 and now that it had changed in hundreds and hundreds of years before.

Magnanimité

"Het Paleis heeft de gemeente Koksijde gevraagd een beeld van Delphine Boël tijdelijk uit het gemeentehuis te verwijderen. Prinses Astrid komt op vrijdag 18 april op bezoek en volgens het Paleis stond het beeld van haar halfzus 'in de weg'.

Het kunstwerk - The Royal Sacred Four Legged Monster - is een werk in papier-maché uit 2001 dat in 2004 door de gemeente werd gekocht. Het beeld stelt een bed voor. Aan het uiteinde prijken een koe en een varken, allebei met een kroontje op de kop. Een beeld van Panamarenko mag wel blijven staan 'omdat het te zwaar is om het te verplaatsen' ".

Ahum ... er zijn dus nog altijd mensen die denken dat zij beter zijn dan de anderen ? Verder : no comment grgrgr.

Hoofdartikel

Grote letters op de eerste bladzijde van mijn krant : "Mijn kind wil dood".

Een therapeute (het woord alleen al !) zegt dat al maar meer ouders om hulp vragen omdat hun kind zegt dat het dood wil. "Als kinderen seismografen zijn van wat in de maatschappij beweegt, dan gaat het niet de goede kant uit."

Inderdaad niet, nee. En zo'n hoofdtitel in de krant wijst ook op een probleem.

Ik houd meneer Jean Marie De Decker voor een verwaande populist ; ik haat het door hem verdedigde ultra-liberalisme en veracht zijn republicanisme.

Puur uit nieuwgierigheid las ik zijn "Het multiculturele drama duurt voort" in De Standaard van vandaag. And lo and behold - ik kan niet echt veel inbrengen tegen zijn betoog. Integendeel !

Dat het artikel nogal eenzijdig gesteld is ? So what ? Zijn er nog andere ? Het gebrek aan luisterbereidschap lijkt me een van de grootste hedendaagse problemen. En we hebben allemaal boter op ons hoofd.

Ben ik dan ook een populist ? Een contraire populist misschien ?

Greenspan

Meer en meer wordt de vraag gesteld of Greenspan niet mee verantwoordelijk is voor de huidige kredietcrisis. Mijn antwoord is volmondig ja. Greenspan zelf weet natuurlijk nergens van want zijn naam is haas.

Maar in die analyses stoot je soms op juweeltjes. Een voorbeeld uit mijn krant van vandaag : “Alan Greenspan was niet rationeel meer. Hij geloofde blind in de zelfregulerende kracht van de financiële markten. Ten onrechte, zo is gebleken.”

Blij het ook nog eens van een ander te horen.

Ik schrijf het al jaren : de economische “wetenschap” is een religie met dogmas en hogepriesters, met waarzeggers en duivelbezweerders, die een uitermate grote en nu en dan rampzalige invloed uitoefenen op uw en mijn leven. En tegenspraak wordt niet echt geduld. Gelukkig is er nog geen echte inquisitie !

In 1778 she married Josephus, named Judocus Neukermans (Okegem 1736 - 1814) with whom she had seven children, of which Adrianus (Okegem 1788 - 1860) was the fifth.

After Elisabeth's death, Judocus remarried and had another three children with his second spouse.

Een forum op De Standaard voor de vraag : "Is de looninexering nog van deze tijd ?".

Dat is het soort vragen waar ik "het van krijg". Ten eerste, om de vraag zelf. Waarom vraagt niemand ooit of winstmaximalisatie nog van deze tijd is ? Ten tweede om het "van deze tijd". Alles (daar ga ik weer) wat de tijdsgeest niet ademt is of voorbijgestreefd, of wishful thinking, en daar hebben wij helemaal geen tijd voor.

Maar ik moet mijn afkeer toch niet verklaren ? Dit is mijn blog !

In an article on the (now unavoidable) regulation of the financial markets, The Economist writes a splendid sentence :

I adore the "harnessing self interest for the public good" ; the writer should get some prize for his creativity and inventiveness, because we see - almost every day - how wrong his liberal dogma is. And a dogma it is ! And then the kick in the backside : "better than any planner-in-chief". That is not difficult, believe you me - I have been there !

What we need is a revolutionised social and "market" system, centered on people and not on profit. We need new people to write it all out : a new Smith, Marx and Keynes combined.

Personally I believe that the fundamental inspiration and many elements of such a system have been available for 2000 years but, up to now, greed has always been stronger. As long as we do not address these fundamental issues, all the other problems we are whining and moaning about will only get worse.

In the end, it is clear that we have two options : either we change, or we perish.

The Belgian foreign minister recently poured cold water on former British prime minister Tony Blair's bid to become the European Union's first full-time president.

He said that Belgium would not accept a candidate from a country that does not fully participate in all EU policies, including the euro currency and the bloc's passport-free zone. Our prime minister has "more or less" given the same message.

"Une fois n'est pas coutume" : for once, I full heartedly agree with our Belgian ministers.

The guy (arrogance is his middle name) should be forced to look for another job. The EU is a bad enough mess as it is.

Olympia

My paper states that the olympic movement and its games should stop pretending that they play a role in the mutual understanding of, and brotherhood between nations. After all, they had enough common sense to stop pretending that they were about pure competition between devoted and focused amateur sportspeople. The games should focus on the competition between athletes and between their sponsors. In that way, turmoil about political issues could be avoided.

The paper writes that it is utterly hypocritical to force athletes into the vanguard of the political action for civil and human rights in China while commercial and state missions keep falling over each other, desperately trying to do business with the same China.

I fully agree. The hypocrites who should take action - if any action needs to be taken at all - are not the athletes but governments and businesses. And a point on the side : the Dalaï Lama is a very remarkable and noble person, but Tibet never has been a democracy : it was a dictatorial theocracy. Let's not forget that. And what about human rights and democracy in most of the Middle East, in Africa, in Myanmar and in so many other regions and countries of the world ?

But then this one sided approach to the problem is quite similar to the approach of another economic topic : whenever there is a doubt about falling growth rates or fear about rising inflation, the focus automatically is on the workers, as if the other other stakeholders i.e. business leaders and government, had nothing to do with it.

Another law of yours truly : when a noble political principle collides with greed, greed will always prevail.

Greed of corporations and business tycoons is all right, but as for you workers : just shut up !

Onveiligheid

Een "blauwe" buschauffeur in De Standaard : " Overlast wordt vaak in één adem genoemd met criminaliteit. Beide leiden tot onveiligheidsgevoelens. Tiens, tiens, ben ik de enige die deze definitie van overlast nogal eigenaardig vind ?

Een "oranje" stem uit de vakbond : "Voor alle duidelijkheid: geweld is niet gebonden aan etnie, maar heeft alles te maken met sociaal-economische factoren die beleidsmatig efficiënt kunnen worden aangepakt." Ik wou - uit de grond van mijn hart - dat ik dat dogma echt kon geloven ...

De stem uit de vakbond voegt er zelf onmiddellijk een zeer zware caveat aan toe : "Sociale controle kan alleen werken als er ook een stevig sociaal weefsel is waarop men kan terugvallen."

Een commentaar in De Standaard van vandaag onder de titel : "Kortzichtige houding" - die kortzichtige houding slaat natuurlijk op de vakbonden die gezien de stijgende inflatie loonsverhogen eisen.

De ondertitel : "Werkgelegenheid niet minder belangrijk dan koopkracht". Daar kan ik beter inkomen ...

Een paar citaten :

"De inflatie nu beantwoorden met loonstijgingen zou de aanzet zijn tot een alom gevreesde loon-prijsspiraal. Elke econoom kan voorspellen waartoe dat leidt: een verzwakkende economie en een oplopende werkloosheid."

Correcter ware geweest : "... zou de aanzet kunnen zijn ...". En de alom gevreesde loon-prijsspiraal ? Regeringen en bedrijven met veel schulden kunnen daar volop van profiteren. Ik houd ook niet echt van zinnen met "elke" en "iedereen", alhoewel ik me daar soms ook aan bezondig.

En we weten wat de "voorspellingen" van economisten waard zijn. Ik heb er zelf ook genoeg "op mijn geweten". Mme Blanche doet het meestal beter.

Ook nog : "Voor de allerlaagste inkomens kunnen gerichte fiscale maatregelen eventueel soelaas brengen". Yeah, we weten toch "allemaal" dat fiscale maatregelen ogenblikkelijk effect sorteren.

Ik lees dat de "Hollywoodlegende" Charlton Heston overleden is, 84 jaar oud. Voor mij is legende het goede woord want een grote acteur heb ik nooit in hem gezien. Het niveau van een niet te beste vlaamse soap misschien ?

Ik lees dat hij in 1959 zelfs een oscar kreeg als beste acteur voor "Ben Hur", maar hij leefde dan ook in het land van de onbeperkte mogelijkheden. Ik heb de "acteur" nooit gemogen en de meeste films waarin hij speelde waren verschrikkelijke draken.

Daarenboven was hij een verstokt wapenliefhebber en jarenlang voorzitter van de NRA - National Rifle Association, een rabiaat verdediger van het - door de Amerikanen zo geliefde - recht om wapens te dragen.

De man zelf leek sympathieker dan de rollen die hij vertolkte. Hij was een aimabel man en een vaste steun voor de beweging voor burgerrechten (civil rights movement) . Hij was ook een zéér grote uitzondering in Hollywood : gehuwd sedert 1944 en naar het schijnt een trouwe echtgenoot.

Miller Martinus Gerardus Van Lierde died in Pamel. He had been born in Idegem before 1723 and married twice. He had one child from his very short first marriage and seven from his second marriage to Elisabeth Baveghems (Pamel 1723 - 1807), who, in her turn, remarried after his death.

I descend from their son Joannes Josephus Van Lierde (Pamel 1746 - 1811).

By the way I just discovered that Timmermans is one of the oldest Flemish family names ever recorded. Mr Bernard Roobaert found the name Walterus Temberman in 1181 and Boidin Temberman in 1182. Mr Roobaert has analysed an unpublished source from the archives of Ninove Abbey.

Fortunately, reporting in this blog forces me time and again to look at my data with a severe critical frown on my face (ahum).

Today I started to write a post on the death of a seventeenth century ancestor Petrus De Vidts, born in Pamel ca 1618. But I stopped in full stride. I first looked at the date of death according to my model : apparently I had typed in April 5 1668. That's why he came up for reporting today. For an number of reasons (or rather indications) that didn't seem to fit.

So I started looking and found two other sources in my notes : one stating October 6 1687 as the date of death ; the other one giving the same date with a question mark. According to my model, my ancestor had eleven children with one wife, called sometimes Josina Van Nieuwenhove and sometimes Josina Van Oudenhove, but according to another (generally very reliable) source, he married three times.

Maybe there has been a confusion between different Petrus De Vidts. I don't think that is likely, but - given de number of Petrus De Vidts who walked the Pamel dirt over the centuries - not entirely impossible.

Fortunately the "Gezinsreconstructies voor Pamel" for the period before the French revolution are due to be published very soon. I can't wait to check my data against that source !

By this time the Julian and Gregorian calendars were 11 days out from each other, so the Calendar Act had to abolish 11 days to put matters right - the 2nd September 1752 was followed immediately by the 14th September. This didn't go down too well with the ordinary people - a lot of them honestly believed that their lives were being shortened by 11 days, and there were several street riots, with people demanding "give us back our 11 days". Also taxes were traditionally due on March 25th (the old start of the year) but this would have meant that on 25th March 1753 you would have had to pay 365 days worth of taxes for a period of only 354 days, so the taxman - in an act of charity completely out of character for his office - advanced the date of payment by 11 days to April 5th, where it has been ever since."

Nog maar eens het dogma : privé = goed, publiek = slecht, maar dan uit een totaal onverwachte bron. En dan zijn ze verwonderd dat het aantal kiezers dat ze nog kunnen bekoren smelt als sneeuw voor de zon.

Op het einde van mij "carrière" was een van mijn professionele stokpaardjes : het bepalen en verder ontwikkelen van "core competences" - toen een relatief nieuw begrip. Nu raak je het aan de straatstenen niet meer kwijt. Maar misschien hebben de socialisten toch nog zo'n oefening nodig ? En de politie ? Dat weet ik wel zeker ! Om alle misverstand te vermijden : ik ben geen candidaat.
