Slotendries park

On Sunday morning, after Mass, I was enjoying my walk in Slotendries park under the fumes of Ghent harbor. A nice walk when there are not too many joggers and dogs on or off leashes about. I saw a very thick old tree which had been cut off at a height of about 1 meter.

Out of sheer curiosity, I bent over, and indeed, the interior had completely rotted away : there was just a rim of 10 - 15 cm thick still standing around an empty core. But down in the hole I saw three rather big greenish blue eggs. I am no specialist but there are scores of ducks in the vicinity, so I supposed they were duck eggs.

But how are those small ducklings ever going to scale those vertical sides ? Maybe they had been abandoned already. Maybe some sick joker stole them from a real nest and put them in there.

For once, I regretted that I can no longer be bothered with photography. I have been a renegade for too long.

By the way there are three restaurants in the immediate vicinity. For what it's worth, my personal advice is : don't go there. The first one has good food but is too expensive and run by a grumpy guy, almost as a favor to his customers. Fortunately you don't see him that often. The second looks more like a big farm - eathouse ; the food is average and in summer waiting can be hellishly long. The third is beyond comment : order a double expresso there and you get two big cups of coffee. I kid you not.

But then, don't listen to me : do exactly what you want. You may need the experience.
